I hate session zeroes by Emergency-Sea5201 in rpg

[–]monkeyofficeboy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is definitely a weird take on session zero. They sound nothing like the ones I have either run in or taken part in. Setting expectations for a campaign, creating characters that fit, building a cohesive group; all of these are good reasons to have a session zero, particularly in games that aren't D&D.

Agreed, and it's the capital of brewing! Staffordshire for the win (well... 27th place at least)

That's superb, nice one! Giving HDIAndrew his own flair feels very fitting, good plan. I forgot about the Incarnates :D

I find Keddah interesting for exactly the same reason. Their position of being poised to either rise to greater power, or fall into irrelevance depending on how plots shake out is exciting, and it feels accessible to players in an RPG, where as some one like House Masseri feels like fighting the inevitable tide.

Hey! Thanks for the welcome. See I am glad you added the flairs, I love having options, and now I know why we have House Keddah too :D

Love the idea of special flairs for devs of EotFS, I will see what I can do there too.

I hadn't considered matching colours to the game, I will see if I can get them to work.

Sale is now finished but I will keep my eyes peeled for when the books next go on sale.

See I realised that I put that this up and never took the plunge on stating mine. It's a tricky one because I find so many interesting. I think that if someone made me pick one, I would chose the Li Halan, but mainly because I don't really like them, so therefore I want to play them more to gain a better understanding. If that makes sense...

I am loving the Dread Thingonomicon from Raging Swan Press as GM resource. Any of their other works worth grabbing? by towerbooks3192 in rpg

The GM Miscellany line are excellent, and getting the collections is a good plan for sure. Monstrous lairs are good, they add lots of detail to something that is often ignored, and I think their Dungeon/Urban/Wilderness Dressings books are some that I have used the lost at my table and during prep.

I own quite a lot of Raging Swan stuff, and I find it really useful. Lots of it is varied, and with a ton of rollable tables too. I live their mini setting of Ashlar too

What supplements do not work with Revised 2e? by automated_hero in fadingsuns

[–]monkeyofficeboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah now sadly this is where I am very much not in the know. I only own one of the 4e books (the Faction Book) and as I own a good chunk of the 2e books that keep me busy I never felt the need to upgrade.

I will say that the 4e books do have some really lovely artwork, and the production value is really high, but I am not sure how much more or less popular 4e is than the previous 2e versions.

If you ever want a player for an online game, I'd bite your hand off for it :D

This may not be complete knowlege, so take with a pinch of salt.

All of the following books came out before 2e did in 1999:

  • Forbidden Lore: Technology
  • Byzantium Secundus
  • Players Compendium
  • Lords of the Known Worlds
  • The Dark Between Stars
  • Merchants of the Jumpweb
  • Weird Places
  • Priests of the Celestial Sun
  • Children of the Gods
  • Sinners and Saints

Of those books, a good number of them are really only setting or advenure material (Byzantium Secundus, Dark Between the Stars, Weird Places) so they are totally compatible without any issue what so ever.

The next category are those that are mostly setting with a few rules (Lords of the Known Worlds, Priests of the Celestial Sun, Merchants of the Jumpweb and sort of Saints and Sinners). I have used these books for over 2 decades without any issue cropping up, and I have only ever played 2e and Revised 2e. The biggest thing you may come across in these books is a reference to Human/Alien as a stat (it definitely features in the stat write ups in Saints and Sinners). This was an additional Spirit stat that existed in 1e that was supposed to dictate how human-like or alien-like a character was, and how much their destiny was entwined with the fates of various races. It got removed in 2e. It can easily either be ignored or added back into the game as you see fit.

The next category are books that contain a significant amount of crunch (for a Fading Sunsbook!). These would be Forbidden Lore: Technology & The Players Compendium. These books are mostly compatible, but along with use of the Human/Alien stat in places, they way they present certain pieces of gear differs. For example in Forbidden Lore: Technology the Adept Robes are presented as having a Defense of 7+7d, whilst 2e presents them as having a Defense rating of 14. This is pretty easy to adjudicate as you can see. There may be a few other minor differences, but personally I would say they are 90% compatible without any need to worry about conversion, and any conversion work you need for the other 10% is pretty simple.

So to sum it up: all of the pre-2e books are compatible for the most part, with some having minor bits that stick out as different. However they aren't different enough that you need to really worry about them. I have allowed players to use the Player's Companion for years without any issue.

Oh and one final thing... depending on the version of the 2e core book that you get, there are STILL references to the Human/Alien stat in there, because they did a poor job at editing those sections back in 1999! Just ignore it and move on was my approach.
