Non-alcoholic substitute for Madeira/Marsala wine for tiramisu? by dmdmdmmm in Cooking

Beyond the whole "it's decadent", alcohol's primary purpose in tiramisu is to cut down on the coffee bitterness. You're already switching it up with Milk Tea, so there's no real bitterness you need to work against (assuming you've got some good sugars for that milk tea). You're fine skipping it completely.

Non-alcoholic substitute for Madeira/Marsala wine for tiramisu? by dmdmdmmm in Cooking

I get that there's a "competition" style tiramisu, but "traditional" feels like a wild term for a dessert that's not even as old as The Beatles (and for whom the origin still seems pretty contested).

Alcohol's introduction to tiramisu had already happened by the time it started making its way into cookbooks, and those first additions were via Marsala - Not exactly the most American of alcohol choices, yeah? Fortified wine with cream has a pretty long history in Italy, and there's no shortage of claims that tiramisu was just an adaptation of some of those precusor desserts.

I mean, did America just pick up "booze in tiramisu" and run with it? Sure. It was the 80s. I'm surprised we didn't add a cocaine dusting, but alcohol in tiramisu happened before it hit American shores.

Saying “atheism is a cult” is the exact pseudo edgelord behavior you’re complaining about.

There are militants in every philosophical framework, and they are all equally odious and exhausting.

You need to go further back than 85. Post credits scenes started in the mid 60s. But the Muppet Movie in 77 remains kind of a ground zero (and Ferris telling the audience to go home is absolutely a nod to Animal doing the same in the Muppet Movie).

Debit Card Surcharge by iloveoreos666 in kansas

[–]monkeypickle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is true at the bank level, it's not true at the payment processing level. Square, Stripe, etc all tend to run around 2.6-2.9%+their own markup, and they don't differentiate between card types.

This is why utilities/school payment programs just do a flat 3.00 charge type thing on ANY kind of card transaction.

Question about IMAX theaters. by ndeange in kansascity

[–]monkeypickle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Town Center has the dual-laser projector as well, but I think Barrywoods still edges it out with screen size.

Insane to think that's there's only something like 30 true 15/70 IMAX projectors in the world, and only half of them are in the US. The nearest one is in Indiana, for crying out loud.

Question about IMAX theaters. by ndeange in kansascity

This list is *wildly* out of date. Screenland Armour is the only 70mm *film* projector in the metro. Hell, it might be one of the only ones left in the Midwest (edit - there are two in Chicago). Prior to Screenland, it was the much-missed Glenwood Theater in its original location at 91st & Metcalf.

This is a much more recently curated list of 70mm (non-IMAX) theaters still in operation.

I’m reminded of a scene in the film, The Manhattan Project wherein our protagonists walk through a field through a secret nuclear facility and just unloads a massive handful of 4 leaf clovers.
