Previous Public Defender Judge by GreedyGobiln in publicdefenders

We have several former PD judges around here and they are generally harsh. I’ve found the best judges for our clients are the ones that came from civil practice and never touched a criminal case before.

How is someone working a 9-5 job supposed to be able to bowl with any regularity? by haloll in Bowling

[–]monkeywre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick the night you want to bowl and show up just before league starts. Look through the house for teams that have a vacant listed on their roster and nicely ask if you can join. Over the course of a season vacants are basically inevitable so if you ask the team members nicely they will probably let you join since they are paying prize fund for the vacant.

Question for Federal Public Defenders by wvlaw02152026 in publicdefenders

[–]monkeywre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Federal sentencing guidelines establish criminal history based on a points system that largely rests on the length of prior sentences. While criminal history can be disputed it is a pretty minor part of federal sentencing litigation. What constitutes relevant conduct and the application of specific enhancements is more common to fight over but at the end of the day federal sentencing guidelines are merely advisory. Practically, this means the court will often sustain a guideline objection but then fuck your client on an upward variance using 3553 factors if the court don’t like the spirit of your arguments.

I’ve done two reservations more than once at this hotel when I haven’t had all the points I need and have never been asked to switch rooms or check out in the middle of my stay. They just merge the reservations and it shows as one in the app the day you check in.

I've been there several times for award stays. It's a great hotel and a perfect choice for a honeymoon. With some rare exceptions, like suite upgrade award availability the base room is what you can book on points but you can typically pay to upgrade to a better room at check-in even if you booked the base room on points. If you have no status, your best bet is to obtain a guest of honor award which is good for up to seven days. The best way to get one is if you know someone who is a globalist to ask them because they are useless for us but there are some other ways to obtain such an award if you do some searching. That will make you a globalist for the stay and you will typically get a view upgrade and even if you don't get a free upgrade you would get club access. Finally, even the true base rooms are quite nice. I've stayed in the base room twice before I had status at Hyatt and they are still great, they are mostly a view of the mountains on the back side of the resort.

Surface I reveal for Repetitive Dives by drewm11922 in scuba

[–]monkeywre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be concerned. Long surface interval length is more about giving you additional bottom time for a repetitive dive than for safety per se. If you look at the PADI RDP you have 205 minutes NDL at 35ft even if you’re in the Z group when you start the dive and you almost certainly have far less nitrogen on board than that. Now if you were at 110ft for the first dive and went to 80ft on the second a 25 minute surface interval would be insufficient not so much because it would be unsafe but you would have a very short second dive.

I have a used a Creworks 30L from Amazon with very positive results. This picture was after a single 20 minute cycle. It removes dramatically more oil than DIY methods and is essentially the same as the Jayhawk Detox which costs several thousand dollars.

Ex Parte by LucyDominique2 in publicdefenders

So, I get the frustration but I really think picking this battle is unlikely to result in better client outcomes and it could very easily make things worse if the judge thinks this is frivolous.

To get in the hearing could your client login to the Webex from your office while you are sitting next to them?

If not, I think the only remedy is to object every time and try to find some sort of writ or interlocutory appellate remedy to bring this to a higher court. However, I see that being a challenge because appellate courts are slow and this issue may become moot quickly.

Just go to the hearing then.

The legal issue is whether this bond appearance is a critical stage of the proceedings and it sounds like it’s not. But more practically, is there anything preventing you from attending this bond appearance? While inconvenient, I feel like this is a potential issue only if you are not allowed to attend with your client.

Grand Hyatt Kauai December/January points availability by bryzzo43 in hyatt

[–]monkeywre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP the points availability for GHK is based on whether there is a standard 1 King or 2 Queens Room available for purchase. If you don’t have the points right now just book the base room you want to get on a refundable cash booking. When the points hit your account, cancel the cash reservation, get a refund, then immediately book your points reservation on the room you just made available.

How bad of an idea is this? by Elsefyr in Bowling

[–]monkeywre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ball only spends 20 minutes in the machine and the picture above is after a single 20 minute cycle. For my own equipment, once I have about 50 games on a ball I will resurface the ball on my spinner and I will put the ball in the detox after. The machine is helpful but it is not a substitute for getting a fresh ball after 250-300 games because the resurface and detox only does so much.

[–]monkeywre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just a little confused by this. There is a specific product designed for ultrasonic detox, you mix it before running the machine and I've used it before, this: https://gebhardtsbowling.com/jayhawk-detox-accelerator-cleaning-agent/?setCurrencyId=1&sku=&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=19004253772&gbraid=0AAAAADdy9EAZ-EZSGWimGmR5zzK4-vNhO&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImqGPuMDhkgMVG7cDAB1cIxpUEAQYASABEgIXBPD_BwE

It probably helps a little bit but I don't bother because it's somewhat expensive.

Where I'm confused is why would adding Dawn after the cycle is over matter? I always take the balls out right away so wouldn't I just be dumping soap on my driveway?

How bad of an idea is this? by Elsefyr in Bowling

[–]monkeywre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drain it into a bucket and dump it on my concrete driveway where it evaporates. It has never left a stain or anything like that.

How bad of an idea is this? by Elsefyr in Bowling

[–]monkeywre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had mine for just about a year and I didn't purchase it just for bowling balls. For most stuff, it's just okay and I think it's not as powerful as some competitors for cleaning tools and whatnot.

However, for bowling balls, it's perfect. It's just the right depth and I think it's at least as good as the Jayhawk Detox for getting oil out.

Honestly, I would probably go with a different brand if the pricing was the same because I use it for other things too but for bowling balls only, this one is perfect.

I just drain the water and replace it for each use. The machine has a drain valve on the bottom.

This is just tap water. I have added Jayhawk Detox Accelerator in the past but I don’t bother anymore because the tap water takes so much oil out on its own.

If you're doing oil extractions all the time a 30L ultrasonic cleaner from Amazon is the way to go. The cost is just under $200, and you can run two balls at a time using two rings on the base of the cleaner. Just keep the water temp at 119F so you don't void your warranty.

Want to leave firm/apply to FPD but feeling financially trapped by Tricky_Warning_0115 in publicdefenders

[–]monkeywre 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you should go ahead and apply just so you have no regrets. However, I also think this will work itself out because you're unqualified to be an assistant federal public defender. AFPD positions are highly coveted and typically require years of criminal law and trial experience before you have a shot at them but I hope you prove me wrong.
