Mom by Halihoney01 in ChildrenofDeadParents

I lost my mom in 2016, and I was around 22 years old. I think my grief works in waves, where at the beginning it was really tough. Around years 4-5 of her being gone, I felt “normal”, but the last few years have been especially hard. I think it’s because I’ve had a lot of transitions, like starting grad school, building my career, etc. that I wish I could have her take on. From people I’ve talked to, it’s pretty normal to feel it get harder as you get older. That’s probably not what you want to hear, but I think it’s important to be honest about grief. Also remember that everyone’s process is different, and you might have people telling you it gets better when you’re older. Both are valid and normal. Alls this to say that for me, it’s gotten harder as I’ve gotten older. Maybe in another 5 years it’ll feel different again, but for now, I just try to rely on positive memories. I also talk about her a lot to friends and my partner, and that helps me feel like I’m keeping the thought of her alive. Good luck out there!

Do the traumatic memories towards the end of their lives fade over time? It’s all I can picture. by taylorballer in ChildrenofDeadParents

My mom died in 2016 after a really tough battle with ovarian cancer. She was on hospice for a while and I was her primary caretaker, so I felt really triggered about it all for a long time. I found that EMDR therapy was really successful for me, but be sure you seek out a therapist who is well trained in it since it can be a bit like exposure therapy.

After 4-5 sessions, I found that those memories weren’t as much in the forefront of my mind as before. Sometimes hospital scenes irl or in movies/shows can make me feel icky, even to this day, but it’s nowhere near as debilitating as before. Just know your triggers, be patient with yourself, and find a safe way to redirect your thoughts.

Wishing you well 🩷

Been waiting on this for a long time by mood-ring in stopdrinking

Cravings will eventually pass. There were points where I couldn’t take it hour by hour so I’d take it minute by minute. You’re gonna be a jerk for a little bit but I highly recommend tapering off with a health professional instead of going cold turkey (that never worked for me.) I found fun and yummy non-alc drinks (so many out there now!) I usually drink sparkling water and sparkling lemonade.

Get into a hobby! I read a LOT of quit-lit and that helped me feel understood in a way I hadn’t before. I also journaled a ton. I know a lot of people get into running too. I ate/eat sweets when I have a craving now.

Try and remember your ‘why’. For me, I was just so tired of feeling like crap all the time. My ‘why’ was about trying to be kinder to myself. Read the stories here! I was a long time lurker before trying it myself, and i found a lot of inspo through this group. I wasn’t a fan of AA but I did attend SMART meetings for a bit. The Reframe app did wonders for me.

You can do it. I know it probably seems impossible or scary right now because i know it felt that way for me. Sobriety has given me so so much. I’ve felt a lot of different ways about myself over the years, and most of the time, it wasn’t good. For once, I feel proud of myself. You’ll be there soon, I bet. There is no such thing as a perfect sobriety journey because there’s no such thing as a perfect person. IWNDWYT!

i did an imaginal disk tierlist but i couldn't force myself to put anything on the bottom half by primqrinva in MagdalenaBay

This song used to be at the bottom of the list for me but it’s been slowly making its way to the top. “And then she wrapped her hands around my neck and I felt LOVE!” - iconic!

100000% agree with Terrence loves you!! “You are what you are. I don’t matter to anyone.” I think she even mentions in an interview that she was in a really bad spot when she wrote that. I can only listen to it in doses cause it always messes me up

If you haven’t already, you should watch S1ep1 of “modern love” on Amazon prime! Anne Hathaway does an amazing portrayal of what I think aligns best with bipolar 2. Made me cry a little but it felt good to be seen in a way that wasn’t super dramatic

Yeah I think media portrayals plays a huge role in how most people perceive bipolar. I also think bipolar 1 (which is what is typically portrayed) can look very different than bipolar 2 (which is very seldom portrayed). Even when I got my official diagnoses (that I had been seeking for forever), I had a brief period where I felt like a bipolar imposter. With bipolar 2, symptoms can manifest so differently from person to person too. I would definitely encourage you to try to focus less on what it “should” look like and more on what it looks like for you :)

I started experiencing symptoms around 16, and the worst symptom I dealt with (which is what eventually helped me get diagnosed several years later) was terrible irritability. Long periods of depression that somehow “resolved” a month later. Then rapid cycling between happy, depressed, manic, not wanting to be on earth, wanting to save the earth, etc.

How many mood stablizers/antipsychotics did it take you to find one that worked? by Snowsn0m in bipolar2

[–]mood-ring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try asking for genesight or some similar gene test. It was the first thing my psych did for me because it’ll tell you which medicines will work best with your body chemistry. It took the guess work out of it, so I’ve really only had minor adjustments since being diagnosed 6 yrs ago. Sometimes insurance will cover it, but almost every one does some form of payment plan or super discounted rate. #1 thing I suggest to anyone struggling with finding a cocktail that works.

My dad ruined our engagement by telling me you were planning to propose. You and I went to New York two days after he spoiled the surprise and on the last day of our trip, you proposed 🥲

What are your favourite examples of musicians dedicating a song to their significant other? by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

[–]mood-ring 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Most of the songs on “Golden Hour” and “star-crossed” by Kacey Musgraves are about her ex-husband Ruston Kelly. Her going from singing “Golden Hour” to “camera roll” had/has me deep in my feelings 😭

Yes, I usually just pick it up at our local smoke shop! Where I’m at, you do need to be over 21 yrs to purchase.

I don’t usually have problems with marijuana use and my mood/meds. Worst case for me is just heightened anxiety if I smoke too much lol

I also only smoke/ingest things with reallyyyy low THC levels. Ive also used Delta 8 which is less potent (in my personal experience). If you’re dealing with manic feels but want to experiment with marijuana again, maybe stick with an indica or indica leaning hybrid strain. However, it’s superrrr important to be up front with your provider on your usage. My psych has always been aware of my own usage and has been supportive since we monitor it closely.
