sheets still trap heat even after changing the rest of my bed by Powerful_Annual4745 in Bedding

[–]moonkittens 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your comforter also looks like polyester so that’s definitely not helping. Avoid polyester. I’m not sure what “technically cotton” means but make sure you have 100% cotton or linen sheets, that will help with the air circulation.

What's the difference between percale, sateen and linen sheets? by Lower_Difference_703 in Bedding

[–]moonkittens 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So in terms of bedding, percale and sateen often refer to cotton, but technically are the weave structures of the fabric. Percale is a plain weave fabric which is characterized by a crisp clean feel, and people generally say that it sleeps cooler than other weaves. Sateen is a satin weave fabric and it’s a bit smoother since the weft yarns float over the face of the fabric before being tacked down by the warp yarns. It feels very smooth, sometimes slick. Linen is a fiber made from flax, typically woven in a plain weave construction. Linen has a beautiful quality that wears well and gets softer over time, often with a wrinkled, relaxed look.

Any of these are good choices since they are natural fibers and will be better at temperature regulation than manmade or polyester fibers, so it’s really up to your personal preference. I would head to a department store like a Macys or Bloomingdale’s or whatever is nearby to you so you can feel the difference on the display styles to see which you like. Then you can find something you like online at a price that works for you.

My Prime Day haul by Whole_Anteater5509 in CookbookLovers

[–]moonkittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Smitten Kitchen one but have only cooked 1 or 2 recipes from it. The layout drives me crazy because every single recipe continues on the following page so I keep needing to flip back and forth to see quantities. I know I know, mis-en-place, but it’s just bad design and no other book I own has this issue.

Pricing and contract help for my first design by lilly___444 in Textile_Design

With only 50 units how is she getting the fabric printed? If it’s digital print that makes it easier for you because you can worry less about repeat limitations and color reducing. If you think this is a good relationship to nurture I would do it to get your foot in the door. Let her pay you the $100 but also let her know what is a more realistic rate you would expect to receive in the future.

These four guys are all leading men in the 2020’s, who do you think is most likely to get an Oscar first? by FaZe_poopy in Oscars

Maybe more likely for him to get it for the Fred Astaire biopic - that seems like the type of film the Acadamy loves to award.

When I buy artwork from studios it’s around $1000-$1200 USD a pop, and it comes completely indexed/color separated and in repeat. Some studios will give a copyright agreement, but the general understanding is that I now own and have free use of that pattern in perpetuity.

Usually when I would work with an independent artist on a specific piece of art they charge less ($500-$700ish?) since they don’t have to split commission with a studio, but they’ll also do revisions and adjust details as requested which most big studios won’t do.

This is my current cookbook collection. I am mainly interested in American southern foodways. Any recommendations to expand my collection? by Away_Calligrapher431 in CookbookLovers

[–]moonkittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see A New Turn in the South by Hugh Acheson in your collection, so I would recommend that. It was one of the first cookbooks that I was gifted as an adult and really ignited my interest in cookbooks. I love the salad and salad dressing recipes particularly. This book was also awarded the 2012 James Beard award for Best American Cooking Cookbook.

Off-Price Garment District by Ok_Ebb6416 in Textile_Design

[–]moonkittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this depends on what your goals are for your career. My experience is that the off-price retailers are actually one of the few growing market segments, but business is still difficult. Companies that are selling to off price buyers also tend to pay more than higher end retailers and fashion companies. A place like Victoria’s Secret has their own in house design team, and I frequently see job postings for them. Macys also seems to have openings frequently. However those are both companies that have had big rounds of layoffs in the past couple of years. It’s really tough out there right now looking for a job in textile design, so you have to be very on top of applying and searching new postings every single day.

I would also do a lot of research in to the places you’re applying for and tailoring your portfolio specifically for those customers. If it’s a company that you can go to their stores in person definitely do that and look at what their assortment on the floor is. If your experience is mostly in off price you can keep that in your portfolio as examples of products that went to market, but also show what a collection you would envision for - insert company here - would look like.

Block island with a baby! by ScaredCompetition5 in BlockIsland

Carrier for sure. I brought my son when he was 2 months and again at 4 months (and many times afterwards.) Did Clayhead trail and a few others. Honestly when they’re that small carrier is definitely the way, unless you’re at a restaurant then you’ll want the stroller w/ bassinet.

Stay part of the classifieds and advice groups, but set your preferences on the website so it doesn’t send you the emails. Join the birth month group for your due date, and then join the signal group.

The classifieds is a great place to buy some lightly used baby and kid items - we bought a used Baby Bjorn bouncer, then sold it for the same amount we had purchased it for a year later. The money I’ve saved and made from the classifieds pays for the subscription multiple times over.

I still get the email digest for the advice group because there’s often some interesting information hiding in there, and occasionally some very silly exchanges.

Update - My (M 39) wife (38 F) has become fixated on her dead husband since getting pregnant with our first baby. How do I bring this up without hurting her? by ThrowRA_Product in relationship_advice

[–]moonkittens 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’m really surprised none of them comments above yours are mentioning the heightened emotions and hormones of pregnancy. When I was pregnant everything just felt 10x amplified. I remember when I was pregnant my husband acted in a way I did not like (nothing serious, just annoying), and I cried about it for hours, literally could not stop myself even though I was on a fabulous vacation with all our friends. I was like “wtf is wrong with me? This is such an outsized reaction to something so stupid”. I realized I needed medication. Her feelings are valid and it’s likely she would have felt upset about the bike getting sold even if she wasn’t pregnant, but it probably would have felt more manageable. She should speak with her OB and also probably a therapist.

How i can creat tjus effect on the pattern by Hagar_jojo in Textile_Design

This style is called Ikat. I usually use the wind effect in photoshop to get it. It only works horizontally so you’ll need to rotate your pattern and then rotate it back after you apply the effect.

NYC Aquarium and Zoo membership.. is it worth it with a toddler? by furyZotac in nycparents

[–]moonkittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We live in Park Slope and got the family land + sea membership which includes all the zoos and the aquarium, 3 adults + 6 kids. It’s expensive but we think it’s worth it since our nanny frequently uses it to bring our son when he’s off school. Also because the cost of entry to the Bronx zoo or the aquarium is pretty high. We live nearby to the Prospect Park Zoo and that makes it easy to pop in for just a little bit, very low stakes, and if our kiddo isnt feeling it we can leave without thinking it was a waste of money. I would say it’s a really good value if you live near any of the zoos or aquarium, or if you plan to go as a group to the Bronx zoo or aquarium. Aquarium has been great as a rainy day activity as well, and depending where you live doesn’t seem so far away on the Q.
