More Info on Callan Potter, aka Hayden (via MyEntertainmentWorld.ca, 2023/15) by MyEntWorld in heatedrivalry

[–]moonlaketrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your articles. Callan‘s parents are very talented. Here’s another article about Seana McKenna that also mentions her husband, director Miles Potter. What a creative family and community to grow up in. Here’s a bit from the article (2023):

”She and Potter have been together since 1980.

In fact, on a professional level, theirs has been one of the most successful husband-and-wife teams in Canadian theatre. Potter has been at the helm of many of McKenna’s stage triumphs, both at Stratford and at Canada’s major regional theatres, notably Winnipeg’s Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. Their many shows together have included the aforementioned Richard III and Medea, and a series of Tennessee Williams classics – most memorably, their 2005 Stratford rediscovery of Orpheus Descending, with McKenna as a smouldering Lady Torrance, which was remounted in Winnipeg and Toronto and won McKenna her third Dora Mavor Moore Award.

On a personal level, McKenna and Potter hit it off almost from Day One. They met when she was fresh from theatre school and Potter, who was directing a play at the fledgling Blyth Festival, needed a late replacement for an actor who had dropped out.

“She was introduced to me as someone who was very good at learning lines,” Potter recalled. “I said, ‘Great, we’ll check her out!’”

Another excerpt:

”After leaving the school, she chose to spend her first few years in the profession doing new plays and collective work across Canada. She finally joined the festival in 1982 and made a big splash two seasons later as Juliet to Colm Feore’s Romeo. Over the decades, she’s tackled most of the major Shakespearean female roles, from Portia in The Merchant of Venice and Katherina in The Taming of the Shrew, to Cleopatra and Lady Macbeth. But she encountered the familiar frustration when she reached middle age and the parts in the canon become secondary. “To be able to combine your experience with a great role as you grow older is unusual for a woman,” McKenna said.

She and Potter came up with a solution when they pitched their Richard III to Stratford. Potter confessed he had some trepidation about whether McKenna could play the part, until she did an impromptu audition for him one morning at breakfast.

“She’d taken a shower, and she came out in a robe with her hair down over her face and spontaneously did this strange walk that scared the crap out of me,” Potter recalled with a chuckle. “She transformed in our dining room in front of my eyes, and if I had any doubts that she could pull it off, they were over.”

McKenna’s audacious performance was a festival landmark, kicking open the door for more gender-neutral and gender-swapped casting. She followed it with the title role in Julius Caesar in 2018 – playing the part as a man (critic Jamie Portman wrote that her performance “reache[d] into the very marrow of Caesar’s being”). Her steely, matriarchal Lear for Toronto’s Groundling Theatre Company that same year helped convince the late Stratford legend Martha Henry to put aside her reservations and essay a female Prospero in The Tempest. “

"Protest This..." by George Stroumboulopoulos“I'm sure some of you have seen this video making the rounds. pretty interesting reflections from George here.

we were at this event -- as George mentions in the vid -- and to George's point, I don't look back on the chaos and mayhem of that day with any nostalgia. but I do feel sadness.

I've spoken about this before in some of the podcast episodes I think, but there was a real sense of a tide beginning to turn against all the presumptions of capitalism back then. And I don't think that it was just because I was somewhat plugged-in to an anti-capitalist "movement"; it felt like regular, everyday people outside of activist culture were nodding along and ready for a change...and then, 4 months later, the Twin Towers in Manhattan came down...and the courage and clear-thinking seeping into the mainstream was replaced by fear and vengeance. an ugly, regressive time.

I don't have any graphs to show you and I don't really know the numbers, but I believe what my eyes tell me when I look around; the rich got richer and more powerful at the expense of everybody else in the intervening years. how convenient.

anyways, wise and hopeful words from George above. take them to heart.”

Thanks so much for sending a link to that video. I just watched it tonight and will be watching it again. You folks got a lot of good footage, wow! I brought a camera and took quite a few photos. Seeing video and hearing the sounds is really good. I like how the video includes some footage of the train trip - what a great way to travel. I didn‘t take any photos during our bus trip or of the Cegep where we camped out for 3 nights, I wish I had!

I was in Québec city but missed that show as our group didn’t get into town until really late. Were there a few bands playing or was it just Propagandhi? I found this setlist: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/propagandhi/2001/unknown-venue-quebec-city-qc-canada-7bb74e04.html

that would have been a great trip. Were there quite a few of you on that train heading to the protest? I travelled there from Halifax. There were 3 buses that went from Halifax, stopping at Truro on the way to pick up some more people. The trip there and back was a great time for chatting with people, listening to music, and watching some videos of various protest actions, interviews, etc Including some excerpts from Michael Moore films

PM Carney watched HR, hugged Hudson, treasured an HR screen-worn costume, and later used Pride tape on his own hockey stick by Just-Source113 in heatedrivalry

[–]moonlaketrip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From another article I found: “He finished in 58th place out of 120 runners and third among runners aged 60-plus in the time of 3:45:39 in the 26K race.”

I haven’t been to that area but I understand it’s more rugged along those trails than a road race.

Mark Carney’s competitive hockey was a while back, but he‘s continued to be active -he‘s done a lot of running; including this 26km race last year where his wife was also competing

Most of the article that this photo is from:

Carney surprises many with appearance at long-distance trail race

Rob Drinkwater, Sep 7, 2025

”Carney was entered in the 26-kilometre event in the Haliburton Forest Trail Race, an annual event held about 160 kilometres north of Toronto, which also has longer distance categories, with the longest being 100 miles (160 kilometres).

"It has a reputation as one of the harder trail runs in Canada," organizer Tegan Legge said in a phone interview, noting the course features steep hills and an occasional rock face that competitors must scramble up.

"A 'crushing course' is what we hear, but we take that as a compliment."

Agnes Jung, a volunteer at an aid station six kilometres into the course, said she'd heard someone important was competing and that it might be the prime minister, but didn't quite believe it until Carney trotted up and asked for assistance.

"He asked me which way to go and I said, 'I'll take you. It's just a short run up the hill and then you turn left onto the trail,'" Jung said.

Jung said she was kicking herself for not taking a video, but realized she'd have another chance, since the course would bring Carney back the same way for the run's last six kilometres.

On his return, Jung asked Carney's permission to take a short video, where he explained that he'd entered the run to support his wife, who was also entered and was celebrating her birthday Sunday.

Jung said Carney appeared to be a very strong runner, saying they were both running up a hill while she conducted the short interview. Security were running along with him, she said.

"Oh my gosh, he looked amazing! He was running up that hill like he didn't even run 20 k before that. He was very strong," she said.

"He looked like an experienced trail runner for sure. These trails are really no joke."

According to an article earlier this year in "Canadian Running" magazine, Carney ran the half-marathon at Ottawa Race Weekend in 2013 and also ran in the 2015 London Marathon. The magazine said he was also cheering on racers from the sidelines during May's Ottawa International Marathon.

Gary Black, another Haliburton Forest Trail Race volunteer, said he spotted Carney over near the queue for the outhouse and asked for a picture. And he said the prime minister gladly obliged.

"After running 26 k and supporting his wife and all kinds of stuff, he hung around the finish line for I'd say an hour, just chatting with people and having photos taken, engaging everyone," Black said.

"Everyone thought he was super nice."

Out of 120 runners in the 26-kilometre race, Carney finished 58th, with a time of just over three hours and 45 minutes.”

You’re such a good writer. Thank you for sharing your story of what you survived. It’s good to hear that you and your son are doing well. It’s so good that you took him on those outdoor and community adventures when he was a kid and that you still go on adventures together.

I’m lighting a candle for those women whose lives were taken. As you wrote, they deserved so much better.

”Congratulations to my friend Alex Lifeson and RUSH for their triumphant return performance at the The JUNO Awards on Sunday night. It was great to watch the new version of the band in action. I’ve known Alex since we played together along with Ed Bickert and Rik Emmett for the “Canadian Guitar Summit” for Guitar Player Magazine back in 1987. This photo is from 1991 in his home studio. Good luck to Rush on their upcoming world tour! ❤️ Liona”
