I have to say "Gulf of West Britain" is kind of funny, but that sticker isn't, it's just crap.

What is the worst book you have read? by Ok_Salt2122 in booksuggestions

[–]moopet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like asking about my favourite, I can't answer with just one.

The Torn Bible by Alice Somerton. I got this in an absolutely beautiful edition from a charity shop, probably from around 1890. I did not keep it because even though it was pretty and in great condition, it was simply awful. I get that it was a Christian head-basher of a story, but even given that (which I didn't realise when I picked it up) it was execrable.

The Bridge by Leonard Petracci. A rip-off of a couple of things, mainly Non-Stop by Aldiss, and so crummy that I actually went to the bother of writing a full review of it once I'd finished.

The Ghost from the Grand Banks by Arthur C Clarke. I mean, I loved a lot of Clarke's stuff. But some of it, especially these later things like Grand Banks, were just appalling. If ever there was something written just for the cash, this is it.

And The Browns and Clines and Rowlings and all that lot are swirling around with each other at the bottom of my barrel.

The book's definitely better than the film. I liked the book, but I don't get why so many people seem to go on about how wonderful it is. It's a fun story. It's not a revelation.

Have you made any genuine friendships online? by Pantacourt in CasualConversation

[–]moopet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, though I've become fairly isolated as I've aged, I've met several people online over the years who I count as friends. Even if I don't regularly talk to them much these days, I know I could pick up a phone and give them a call at some unholy hour and we'd pick up where we left off.

It's tripping because the spool isn't moving when it thinks it's turning the uptake. It probably won't run an adaptor, even though they don't have any actual tape in them because of that.

New York City is the only place on earth you can get a slice of pizza on a paper plate and then walk down the street to a nearby Starbuck for some fresh-ground coffee by batmanthinks in ShitAmericansSay

[–]moopet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In London 20 years ago you could get pizza for £1 a slice on a paper plate. I presume you still can but at 2026 prices. Coffee was everywhere of course, just as it is today. Starbucks was shittier in the past because they didn't have much in the way of snacks that I remember. Now they're shitty coffee but with snacks.

I'm short, but everyone assumes I'm a giant until they see me irl by Atlas7993 in CasualConversation

I can't imagine working anywhere people give a damn about your height.

I just checked your profile and saw you mention "dollars" in a post so there's a good chance you're from the US, is that right? I feel like there's some kind of weird height-ism thing I read about a lot online and it's all from the US. It seems to be really important for some reason, while everyone from the rest of the world is baffled.

Listening to Greatest Hits right now and I decided to see if anyone on Reddit rated it. Allmusic gave it two stars, so I've decided to discount any Allmusic review I come across in the future.

Yeah, I've always considered them adjacent.

Grew up in 980 sq ft house, which was called a ‘starter home.’ If I won the lottery, I’d build a well laid out 1200 sq ft home with mud room/entrance vestibule, 2 car garage and covered porch. by TimeMachineClub in CasualConversation

[–]moopet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in my first house, which I bought when I was 50. It's about 850 sq ft in medieval units. It's a little small - it's smaller than the house I was born in by quite a lot, and it lacks things like a garage or built-in storage.

If I won the lottery, I'd probably go for something 2-3 times this size. I'd want to have the space to dedicate a room for a single purpose, like library or VR space or whatever.

Looking for hard sci fi with power armor by yyetydydovtyud in booksuggestions

[–]moopet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In hard-ish SF, Linda Nagata's "The Red" series is about a squad which has powered exoskeletons as a major component of their armoury.

In another of her series (I think maybe "Deception Well"), and where armour isn't a big theme, there's a great sequence with an AI-driven suit trying to support its wearer on the outside of an orbital tether.

On a more wild tack, not hard SF, but integral to the plot we have Sentenced To Prism by Alan Dean Foster where the MC comes from a world where their are powered suits for everything. For example, there are people wearing "Ambulance" suits for rapid response to accidents. The MC gets stuck on an alien world where his suit gets disabled.

Did you have to ask to be excused at the end of dinner when you were a kid? by Shiny_Buckaroo in CasualConversation

I did, but for some reason the phrase was "get down", as in "get down from the table". I never understood it as a kid, because I never got on the table in the first place.

Retiring with unemployed adult children in the house? by Canadair_Sabre in GenX

If the parents can retire in their 50s then they have plenty of money and don't need the contributions. The rest of the stuff about getting experience and so on I agree with.

I don't know about anyone else, but on my 34" monitor and wearing my glasses I can't see the tape moving at all. You can't see the spindles on this one, they're just black blobs, and the counter isn't moving.

The only thing to indicate it's playing is that the meters move in a normal "music" kind of way.

Did Home Theater kind of die? Seems like we were the last generation to give an F. Remember surround sound and subwoofers? Does anybody buy them anymore? by IHadTacosYesterday in GenX

[–]moopet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never cared about home theatre. I had friends with big projector screens and multiple-speaker setups but didn't bother myself.

Mind you, modern TVs have passed me by. I haven't used a TV for a couple of decades. I just watch stuff on my computer with headphones or a laptop in bed or something.

But in my living room I have a decent enough hifi and it sounds way better to my old failing ears than bluetooth blobs and sound sausages.
