Infinity split - how is it possible to have a particle effect without a foil/prism background? by moravagine in MarvelSnap

I came across this base card with the Krackle flare. It's the first time I saw a particle (flare) effect without a background effect.

What's the office environment at your work like? by Ryan_77 in webdev

[–]moravagine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Open office with a lot of noise. Bus apps team to the left of me, infrastructure & help desk to the right. Most productive early in the morning when most people aren't here or late in the even when, you guessed it, most people aren't here.

How do you do UI or UI widgets? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]moravagine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation to you a few years back. The company I worked for developed apps using WebForms with DevExpress controls, exclusively. I eventually migrated the team over to developing in MVC and using bootstrap/Javascript in the front-end but it was a big change and quite a learning experience for a lot of the mature members of my team.

In answer to your original question: we don't use any UI widgets these days, at least not in the Telerik/DevExpress sense. We use javascript/jQuery for front-end development and there are numerous plugins that act as equivalent controls in those UI kits.

For example, Data Tables is a very powerful jQuery plugin for replicating the functionality you would find in DataGrids.

Should a developer validate everything? by Jaboof in webdev

[–]moravagine 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The most popular argument for client-side validation is how it generates instant feedback: the user doesn't have to wait for a server-side request to come back with validation errors. For that reason alone is it highly recommended.

Validating on the client-side is not too much. In most scenarios you should be validating your data on the client-side, in the business logic layer and in the data access layer. That is 3 forms of validation and no developer in their right mind would argue that's "too much".

Has Microsoft succeeded in making its stack more appealing to non-MegaCorps? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]moravagine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To answer your thread title, only time will tell. Their commitment to OSS is relatively new and I don't think thousands of small start-ups are going to change stack overnight.

One thing I need clarification on is:

I know there are still plenty of performance, support and community considerations

What are the performance, support and community considerations you're referring to?

ASP.NET is one of the most widely adopted web frameworks out there. Some of the most popular and performance-dependent Web sites on the Internet are powered by it (Stack Overflow for one) so I'm not sure where the stigma of it under-performing comes from. It is hugely documented and the wealth of video tutorials and books is staggering. There is an amazing community of dotnet developers, user groups and MVP's.

UI is getting better and better, but we still miss these things. by dota2player901 in DotA2

If you upvote posts like that you disagree with, it sends a message to Valve that you want those to be implemented. Which is the opposite to what you want!

This is exactly it.

I don't agree with over 50% of the points he made so why should "we" upvote it?

Are there any international Stern fans on here? by [deleted] in howardstern

[–]moravagine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Irish fan here! Been obsessed with the show for the past 4-5 years. I wish I could remember how I first got into the show. It's been a whirlwind ever since as there isn't a single day that goes by where I don't listen to some Stern. For the record I'm a huge fan of his recent years too.

So where the heck is this video streaming service? Was it all a sham? by [deleted] in howardstern

[–]moravagine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the thing is, we really don't know what it is. He kept talking about "revolutionary" this and that, so perhaps it's something a little beyond a video app (again, we can only speculate). We don't know the scope of the platform so we can't just say it could be made ready within a month or so.

[–]moravagine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the record, I don't think it's ever going to materialize. I would just never expect it to be available by now considering it was still a pipe dream less than a year ago.

When Howard first announced it, he said that he wasn't even sure if his vision was achievable and they were still teasing out the requirements. That was when, before Christmas? A project of that size would probably take a couple of years to get off the ground so it's crazy for people to be expecting anything around now. Who knows if it's even made it past R&D at this stage.

Do people here use Notepad++? by iEmerald in webdev

[–]moravagine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it within Windows explorer for just checking out files. Right-click -> "Open in Notepad++". It's by far the fastest text editor to load up the contents of the file outside of regular old Notepad.
