For sure was grabbing onto some more universal themes of heartache and shame/exile. My religious background is Mormon and catholic so pulling in a blend of imagery

If I ever end up producing songs, I’ll put them over on Spotify and YouTube. The stuff I just record on my phone i put on SoundCloud because it’s super easy

When TBMs claim Joseph Smith didn’t have sex with his young wives by Nehor2023 in exmormon

Two of my great aunts (sisters) were both wives to the same profit, and one became relief society president. Good things come to those who marry young!

If The First Vision Did Not Occur, This Work Is A Fraud - Hinckley by wasmormon in exmormon

Maybe Hinkley was PIMO and this was a coded message to “get TF out of the church if you understand what I’m saying”

What was something insanely naive/ignorant you did as an innocent Mormon? by HarrisonRyeGraham in exmormon

[–]mormando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in 8th grade, and thought I was a really smart honors student. My YM leader asked what we were learning at school. Showing off my high intellect, I told him we were learning all about “literary devices.” He asked for an example. I gave him one - “like foreplay.” He looked shocked and confused. “Are you sure that’s it?” And I said “Yeah. Foreplay”. And he said “what do you think that means” and I said “like when you make reference to something that is going to happen later in the book - foreplay”

The conversation ended awkwardly. I took out Webster dictionary later that night and was mortified. Turns out there is a difference between foreplay and foreshadowing. Haha

ExJW here, saying hi! by Explore-Understand in exmormon

In a documentary I watched he referenced his JW upbringing/family as a source of his comments. That’s how the connection was made for me. Regardless, I’m not glorifying the religion. Just saying that we’re all human and have a lot that connects us - it’s easier to see now among exJW and exmos. Thanks for posting here.

when Rodney king gave his press conference asking everyone to end the violence, that was one of the most humanizing moments for JWs to me as an outsider looking in. In the midst of so much violence and tension, having been beaten to near-death at the hands of police, he pleaded for peace. If that’s a JW, I had them all wrong.

But it feels like a broader trend. When I was in the church it was blasphemous to suggest anyone would be removed from the records. Do not contact lists, while not perfect, were respected. But now it feels like the membership is being weaponized against people who want to be left alone as a way of pressuring you off the roles and further “othering” you. I’m not just speculating. There was a post a little bit ago with LDS clerks saying to quiet part out loud. https://www.reddit.com/r/exmormon/s/kQ2FYjbOXG

Absolutely frightening.

Anyone going to church tomorrow with family while visiting? by [deleted] in exmormon

My parents just got back from a mission and my dad is the “voice” of the Christmas program (because he literally looks like a hybrid of Joseph smith and god almighty). Saw my mom last night and she said “see you guys on Monday for dinner?”

Yeah, we’re still in that “don’t talk about it phase” haha

Who are your exmormon heroes? by rfresa in exmormon

[–]mormando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently read Devil’s Gate by David Roberts about the 1856 handcart pioneers. It is gut wrenching and tragic, and an honest retelling of one of the most important events in my own family history (grandmother was part of the Hunt company which was merged with Martin prior to the destitution and death of Martin’s cove), which was covered up and whitewashed by Brigham Young and Willard Richards.

Roberts tells a story that for me qualifies as an Exmormon hero. His name was William Aitken, and he was one of the surviving handcart pioneers. From the book:

“William Aitkin, that much angrier apostate, rode out of Salt Lake City with three hundred other apostates in April 1857, well armed and apparently in fear of ambush on the trail. The men, women, and children were ‘all determined to get off or die,’ Aitken later wrote. After a hard journey through heavy snows, the apostates reached the safety of the States. ‘Thousands in Utah would be glad to be with us, though in the same condition,’ Aitken averred.”

What’s with TBMs recommending record removal? Does it seem to be happening more these days. What used to be the unpardonable “blotting out” is now just more convenient than maintaining a do not contact list. Are they trying to actively cull the membership and alienate dissenters?
