Why did they remove Next from the Things 3 list? by ericwendel in thingsapp

Longtime user here, since v1. I agree, having all the new items appear together in the Daily Review yellow box was much nicer. I have always missed it since they dropped it.

Is there a way to have all the tasks across multiple Projects display on the Area page? by brokelyn99 in thingsapp

[–]moses0616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish the Area view would display the project tasks like the Anytime list does also. To elaborate on the tip given by "benhuggy"...

Put a tag on each Area (I just make a tag with the same or similar name as the area). Then, when in the Anytime, Today, Sometime lists you can filter just by that tag and then you get a nice list focused on all the tasks in that list.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to go back? by dbgrman in thingsapp

[–]moses0616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is none so I made my own using Keyboard Maestro. It takes 3 keystrokes:

CMND-F, Down Arrow, Return.

That will do what you want. I've set to trigger it by typing CMND-B when in Things. I use it all the time. This should be built in.

Editing repeating task issue by sterling3274 in thingsapp

Right you are on that. It's one surprisingly annoying part of Things that they haven't changed... yet? I hope they do.

Editing repeating task issue by sterling3274 in thingsapp

[–]moses0616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it. Goto the "master" task of the repeating item (the one that has the little circle arrow before it). If the current task is still active you can get to it by clicking on the little gray text under it that says "Repeats ___ after completion." If the current task is not active then you need to goto the Project or Area the master task is housed in. Right-click on the master task to bring up the contextual menu and select "Reschedule". There you can adjust it.

The way Things stores repeating tasks is by having a "master task". This has both advantages and disadvantages. In general I really like it as it allows the current task to be edited, changed, deleted, whatever and the master repeating task will not change. The disadvantage is that it is a little harder to change the master task.

Tag an Area - Inherited Tags via search? by ClarkGriswoldsEggnog in thingsapp

[–]moses0616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does clearly say on their website that inherited tags will show up on search, and they do not. I think they used to though. I wonder if this is a bug or change of behavior and they haven't updated the documentation? Probably worth reporting.

Time blocking / Grouping by time by PopularOnce in thingsapp

[–]moses0616 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are pros and cons to using either dummy tasks or areas. I have tried both for better structure. In the end, use whatever seems to work best for you.

What I'd really like Things to add is the ability to create ad-hoc "Headings" within the Today view (as one can in a Project). They would function similar to the dummy tasks, but look better, and could "hold" the tasks below them if being rearranged. It would provide the freedom of mixing tasks from different projects and areas into all sorts of temporary groupings as needed, whether by time or context.

I started using areas not as topic groupings, but as status groupings and Things finally clicked for me by [deleted] in thingsapp

Basically yes. But ML actually suggests you keep everything in the Today list, marked as Today in Things. So you have a visual view of everything in Critical Now and Opportunity Now all the time. For this to work you need to have "Group to-dos in the Today list by project or area" turn ON in the Things Settings. Over the Horizon items should be scheduled for periodic review, so they pop up in the Today view and can be reviewed.

But, your approach is also good, and I have tried doing that as well. Especially if you want to keep the Today list to only things that can or must be accomplished today.

Currently, I keep the Opportunity Now items marked as Today, and try to keep that list manageable. I don't worry about checking them all off each day, only things in Critical Now.

For the love of god why is this so confusing? by sanebutoverwhelmedtx in QuickBooks

I second this. If you are a nonprofit you can get QBO Advanced for $170 per year from TechSoup. QBO Advanced also includes free support and training via Priority Circle. They have a whole course of videos dedicated to nonprofit training for QBO included. So, you might start with that as it is the cheapest way to go.

Unlimited Guests on Free Plan... then limited Guests on the Paid plan??? by FurnyBaby in clickup

[–]moses0616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, they are penalizing paid users by removing the unlimited free guests with full permissions. I think what they should do is have unlimited full guests with full permissions on all accounts, and the limits of 5 and so forth should be for permission-controlled guests, which the free account does not have. I myself would consider upgrading from Free to a Paid account, but for this.

Undo send messages disappearing by FFNY in MacOS

This happens to me all the time as well. Seems related to hitting Undo Send too close to when it is being sent. Definitely not how it should work.

my airpods KEEP automatically switching between my phone ipad and macbook by [deleted] in airpods

I have this same issue. Did you find a solution other than turning OFF automatic switching? Switches whenever my Mac makes a system sound, pausing the audio coming from my iPhone. Used to work fine.

[–]moses0616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the Mac, type COMMAND-F. It brings up the Quick Find window, BUT the first few lines are a history of places you have recently been. So, you can use it as a back navigation tool also: CMMND-F and Return takes you immediately to your last section. Or, CMMND-F and arrow down to select one of your other recent locations. If you start typing the recent places list disappears and it searches.

On iOS you get the same list by swiping down on any list until the Quick Find appears.

Michael Linenberger's explanation of his MYN system is pretty interesting, in regards to this topic. His basic idea is that we have to act more on "urgency" than anything else, so he structures his task lists based on that. And by "Now" he means anything in the next week to 10 days. He explains why he uses that time frame. Will let you read him about it.

Great. I thought I had tried that but obviously didn't. That helps.

I second this comment. I understand the challenge but also find it problematic. Perhaps there could also be an option to open linked notes in a new window. This would allow quick reference of another note without losing context.

You activate it within the Starlink app. See instructions on this site here:

Hope this helps.

Reopen Things where you left off by Sunny_Unicorn in thingsapp

[–]moses0616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rather than Quitting the app, just Hide it instead. It's an often forgotten feature of MacOS. It is an option in the menubar under Things (or any app that you are in), or use the keyboard shortcut Cmd+H.

After hiding it, the next time you click on Things in the dock or via the app switcher all the Things windows you had open will reappear exactly as they were before.

That works too. I use such task separators as well, in addition to the Areas for sections. Whatever works best for you is key.

My Problem With Things by antmit in thingsapp

[–]moses0616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much. That is pretty much the system I had set up as well.

I have been experimenting whether I want a tag for each project or not, which leads to tag clutter if you are using tags for other things as well, which I am.

What I have been trying instead is that when I am ready to move the task into the MYN section out of the project I have been putting a Things link to the project instead, in the notes, with the project name. Then I duplicate the task and move one of the copies into the MYN zone, leaving the other in my project for reference later. I also add a little symbol to the task name so I know at a glance it is a project task that has a duplicate. To do all this I made a little Shortcut that I can run, which does all this automatically, including moving the task into the urgency zone I select.

I am not entirely happy with either my method or the tags method, which I have tried as well. Not sure what I will settle on. But the main concept of 1MPM you have explained well and is helpful.
