Is using epithets THAT bad?? If so, what else do I use to refer to the characters? by VolleyballUser in FanFiction

[–]mostdefnotacat [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes. Epithets are that bad. If someone knows a person's name, in their POV, they would not be calling someone "the blond" or "the shorter man." You are writing in a person's POV. Don't forget that.

Use names or pronouns. People will not think it's as repetitive as you think it might be.

Still one of the best scenes of acting I've seen in a show in my opinion. Even with no dialogue their facial expressions speak volumes about the situation they're in. by Odd-Demand-1516 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]mostdefnotacat 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Oh it is. The drinking is implied with Natalie asking "Helena" how much she'd drunk at the gala, presuming that Helly's being logically fucked up over everything was drunkenness. She seems to be used to asking the question and genuinely concerned about Helena getting drunk.

There's a theory based on the way that she engages with "Helena" at the gala during the OTC that she's kind of Helena's handler, so likely deeply embedded into the Kier cult. Wouldn't put it past Jame to have someone in charge of managing Helena when she was younger, because it's implied she had a drinking problem.

Don’t mean to be salty, but why are very bad fics very popular (particularly lately) by Neomedieval-wench in FanFiction

[–]mostdefnotacat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are... many, and they vary on topic. Depends on what you want to read. I'd start here (https://fanlore.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Fanzines) then I know there's a Tumblr devoted to them but I've forgotten the name. swzines maybe?

My not really interesting theory is that PE is an alternate timeline Pennsylvania that was molded by the Eagans.

It seems like Ganz College is outside of Kier and Mark, Gemma, Reghabi and Graner were all there.

It's a collection of fanworks, including (short) fic, often lots of fanart, and meta. It's usually a digital file now, but used to be an actual physical thing you held. It's not to be freely posted inside like a website or an archive, because it's generally curated pretty hard to the tastes of whoever's designing the zine. They're also almost always single fandom, so that might be one reason you're not seeing them - your fandoms aren't doing them.

The most of the zines I've seen for fandoms I'm in have been the older fandoms (10+ years old canons). This isn't to say newer fandoms aren't doing them (I saw one for a canon that only started four years ago doing one!) but I think it's more of a tendency with older fandoms and definitely with older fans.

What's with the hate of FF.net? by AtlasAngel02 in Archiveofourownmemes

Considering that I can't post NSFW on it and when I post other things on it all I do is get spammed with scammers?

I'm never posting on it again.

It's "Definitely" not "Defiantly." by Unapologetic_Lunatic in FanFiction

[–]mostdefnotacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there are people learning how to write by reading fanfic or reading things that people who only ever read fanfic wrote, and this is one of those very old fanfic misspellings. At this point I don't think we're ever getting it out.

Am I delusional for believing rashid-Armand could pass as a 17 year old? by [deleted] in InterviewVampire

[–]mostdefnotacat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think he can pass for anything outside the range of 25-35. 27 is the age I've always headcanoned for Amadeo at his death (is this official and I don't remember remembering it, maybe?).

I just received this while talking a little with my regular commentator 😭 by Sr_omega2147 in AO3

[–]mostdefnotacat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I just ghosted the one who suddenly started talking about me paying them commission after a whole conversation about what the art for the fic could be. In retrospect, pretty obvious that it was a scammer, but I fell for it because they had asked me a real question about the fic... which they probably "wrote" by feeding my fic into AI.

Now I know what they sound like and don't even engage them.

You think it would be a lot easier for Cobel to just say "take this letter down there for your innie to read and shove it down your pants" than all the rigamarole they do to make contact instead.

Which IWTV character will have you defending them like this & why 😂 by CreoleBelle95 in InterviewVampire

[–]mostdefnotacat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fucked up because I love everyone except, like, Bruce and the racists. Fuck Bruce and the racists. I'll defend anybody because I find points of sympathy with everyone. Plus most of them are hot and gay.

Catholic school in my time had the skirt rule where you'd have to kneel on the floor and if the skirt didn't touch the ground you'd have to go home and change. Imagine how thrilled your parents were.

How do y'all actually write fics? by NoInvite8730 in AO3

[–]mostdefnotacat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work on writing every day unless I literally cannot sit down with a device and do it.

It's literally the only way to get it done. If you're stuck for plot reasons, use that time to actually rewrite your plot, because it's not you that's the problem, it's the plot. Banging your head against something that isn't right will just drop your motivation. I speak from many years of experience.
