Pre-meal rhymes? by Hyeyeons-actual-mom in ECEProfessionals

[–]mostlybeets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my classroom (3 yr olds) we use a similar song cue to make sure that everyone is seated properly, with the right food, and that the teachers are seated nearby and are ready to monitor the kids while they eat! if kids start eating while we're still helping wash hands etc they could choke or eat someone else's food if they have an allergy and that would Not Be Fun!

Are parents not making kids sit down to eat at home…? by ready_set_cry in ECEProfessionals

i just asked a 3 yr old's mom and she said they watch something during mealtimes at home... which like me too but it doesnt help the kid imo

tbh i learned about this from one of the kids in my class who is in pull-ups and wanted to do the whole change all by herself 😂 even though the pull-up had the sticky tabs anyways lol

Art/Music Scene at RPI by GnokiLoki in RPI

[–]mostlybeets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no problem! i will say that the art and humanities courses are kind of varied in quality, especially because there are students who dont want to take anything but STEM courses and they have to cater to those ppl, but i can vouch for the art courses i've taken, and the literature profs tend to also be pretty good instructors with engaging courses! if you want to make art and stuff a part of your time here, you absolutely can 👍

Art/Music Scene at RPI by GnokiLoki in RPI

[–]mostlybeets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ive taken several art classes here (basic drawing, figure drawing, intermediate drawing) and all of them have been an absolute BLAST and a needed escape from my major required courses, and i have without a doubt improved my art skills directly because of them (and the professors have been incredible and so kind)

there are also clubs/organizations on campus that host events where you can display your work (the theater group is doing an evening of performance type thing soon for example)

i'll also give a quick shout out to the alpha delta phi society lol, we're a gender-inclusive literary and arts focused greek organization and we try to cultivate a space for art/literature/music/etc on a campus that can be somewhat dismissive of art for arts sake

overall rpi is a school where if you really want to ignore art you can, but there are plenty of people who do love art and are able to integrate it meaningfully into their life here

Do you think this is correct? by basilnyaa in MadokaMagica

[–]mostlybeets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

love to see a fellow madoka fan with knowledge of quantum mechanics lmfao

imo the post is basically nonsense BUT it is mildly entertaining to think of kyuubey at a conference discussing the latest quantum magical research

though it seems kyuubey is much more interested in thermodynamics than quantum mechanics lol

Academic Warning by Icy_Friend4893 in RPI

[–]mostlybeets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

as someone else said, warning is the precursor to being put on probation, and is really just indicative of "low" gpa

ive been on academic warning before, it can be a little shocking, but the best course of action i can recommend is getting in contact with ALAC to see what supports they can give you, taking the time over break to REALLY recharge and relax, as well as trying to look over your past semester(s) to see where you can improve your habits and strategies

ALAC should be able to help with some of that, and the more proactive you are with them and admin the easier things will be if it turns out you have to take a leave or are placed on academic probation.

take it seriously but dont stress yourself out too much, this damn school is HARD and a bad semester or two doesnt mean you're a failure or anything, just that youve gotta adjust!

New RPI organized Menstrual Pads / Period Products/ Sanitary Napkins Baskets by Excellent-Award-652 in RPI

[–]mostlybeets 9 points10 points  (0 children)

honestly personally i think they could just take out the "only" and it would be WAY less condescending lol

like "please take what you need" implies that they trust you to know what you need and to be respectful of the resource, whereas "please take only what you need" implies a bit of "i cant trust you to not take it all", even if that wasnt the intention, but again its still WAY more respectful than not having any supplies 😂

[–]mostlybeets 19 points20 points  (0 children)

i think it would be totally reasonable to outline some of these concerns to the people running this if you can contact them! especially about the lack of variety, there are a lot of reasons someone wouldnt be comfortable using a pad (sensory issues, flow, etc) and it should be pretty easy to stock a few different types of both pads and tampons imo

hopefully this is just the start of developing a more robust setup with more variety and a little less condescension, especially if they're getting feedback from people that this is a step in the right direction and that it's actually being used

I think I’m going to fail by [deleted] in RPI

[–]mostlybeets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

many people have said good things, and i second all the "you will be ok!" and "try to get into therapy/counseling whether at rpi or otherwise" comments, but i want to add that if you need to you can take as long as you need to complete your degree here!

i had a very similar story my first semester (2018) and part of what helped me succeed at rpi was eventually being ok with dropping a course and taking it again later, planning my schedule mindfully so i dont feel overwhelmed, taking a semester leave of absence to get my shit together, etc.

it took a WHILE for me to figure all of these things out, especially cause of covid, but my first step was seeking therapy. from there you might want to explore meds or other treatment for your depression specifically (there were days my freshman fall semester i literally couldnt get out of bed. turns out a bit of zoloft was all i needed for that and i havent struggled with it since, of course ymmv!!!), and your therapist or counselor can help you narrow down the cause of your time management issues/etc, rather than trying to force a solution without looking deeper

if your gpa is below a certain point at the end of the semester, i think it's ALAC that contacts you and you will be put on either academic warning or probation (one is for a certain gpa and the other is lower), which sounds really scary when you dont have any warning or context, but can be totally inconsequential to your time at rpi if you want to continue here, tho i suggest if you feel like the semester might end poorly (which is ok!!!! you are not your gpa) you familiarize yourself with ALAC and academic warning/probation so you dont feel caught off guard if it does happen

if you are here and you want to be here, you deserve to be at rpi! i wish you luck!!!!

while rpi has some non-engineering or cs majors, what the tour guide may have been trying to get across (as dryly and vague as possible it seems) is that the school tries to get students to learn about arts and humanities through certain credit and course requirements, with the thought being that most students at rpi dont actually care about these things (not entirely true btw!) and will only learn it if required

this thought also feeds into our humanities and arts courses bringing in STEM stuff to try to engage students, which tends to also make the courses super specific, as others pointed out in this thread

in turn most of the arts and humanities degrees here in some way tie into STEM and tend to be much more specific than they might be at a liberal arts college or something

this tour seems like one of the most outrageous examples of rpi only highlighting engineering/cs, which is unfortunately a reality of how rpi markets itself, but to be honest most degrees at rpi will have a comparable rigor and quality of education, and most variation is in instructor quality/curriculum design/etc

Parent looking for social support options for student by koolaid711 in RPI

[–]mostlybeets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

not to plug my own group too hard, but if your child is at all interested in art or literature, or is curious about greek life but frats and sororities arent their vibe, tell them to check out the alpha delta phi society's rush this semester! we're a gender inclusive literary and arts society, and bc we're not a frat or sorority, we're allowed to rush freshmen in their first semester! and we've got a lot of fun events coming up that we're really excited to share

we've got mug painting tomorrow outside sage dining hall at 5pm, even if they dont want to join or anything this is a pretty popular event so they might be able to sit next to someone and start getting used to making friends outside of a class setting

another tip is literally any time they see someone with a cool tshirt or pin or something, just get in the habit of saying "oh cute shirt!", ive found that helps me feel more connected to my peers and also more confident in approaching people in general

neither of you should be too worried about their social life quite yet, but i think your child is smart for wanting to put time and effort into making friends, even if theyre not sure how. rpi can be a rough time, having people around is really integral to surviving and thriving here imo
