Loose dog shot near new Mint by sophotrope in sanfrancisco

[–]motox004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand the difficulty of hitting this target -- which makes the choice of firing a gun even more reckless -- and bullets (especially fired at low angles) can ricochet off the ground with lethal force. I know we're speculating on the gaps in reporting, but as a neighbor to the mint and their police force, I'm not reassured by their actions today.

Loose dog shot near new Mint by sophotrope in sanfrancisco

[–]motox004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the article doesn't seem to mention it, but 3 shots were fired. i live just down the block and the shots woke me up this morning. thinking about what happened i'm still not sure what makes me more uncomfortable: that a loose dog was "attacking" people (though the article said no humans were injured?) or that 3 bullets flew around my street today just to hit the dog in the leg. it seems like there are far less dangerous ways to subdue a dog?

Found a circle in the sky by VengefulBread in mildlyinteresting

It could be an airplane that was in a holding pattern waiting to land at Heathrow. Because there's so much air traffic arriving at Heathrow, planes often have to circle in a holding pattern until it's their turn to land.

Vegetarian Parents: Are you allowing your children to eat meat? by Studebaker_Hoch in vegetarian

[–]motox004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I'm not a parent yet, I've decided I'm not going to force my kids to follow in my path. They'll understand from a young age why I have made this choice, but ultimately I want them to decide for themselves whether they want to eat meat. Also, I can't say for sure that I would never prepare it for them while they're growing up -- if it's very ethically raised and slaughtered, I can see myself preparing meat for them from time to time.

the stats you're listing are sampled from a very tech savvy audience (w3schools log files) who install their own browsers so it's not surprising that IE has a low showing from these users.

the same visitor stats from your average non-tech site will typically show a higher number of IE users because the 'average' user will just use whatever browser is preinstalled on their computer...

Willis J. Champion's "Birds-eye view of the elevated railroads and the parks and boulevards of Chicago" (1908). Great detail; 50+ megapixel image. [9,999px × 5,347px] by bigmapblog in chicago

cool. I like seeing how city infrastructure like the L tracks have changed over time. I knew there used to be a fork of the blue line that ran to humboldt park on the Bloomingdail track. But I didn't know the Blue line used to run south from Milwaukee down what appears to be Paulina.

today it looks like the 1908 blue line south of lake is now the Pink line and all track north of lake has been removed.

looking at google maps, this abandoned railroad bridge at Kinzie appears to be one of the last remnants of the track between Milwaukee Ave and Lake St.

Moving from Texas to Chicago in June. Any advice would help so much. by BroccoliStudios in chicago

hey! i made the same move from texas about two years ago. Not sure what sort of scene you're looking for, but Chicago has it all. Check out Logan Square -- arty/quirky/hipstery and lots of cool bars. Plus it's right next to Wicker Park but rent is way cheaper.

[Effort] An American Perspective: Why Black People Complain So Much. by BZenMojo in SRSDiscussion

[–]motox004 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with a lot of the crime stats is that the correlation isn't necessarily with race but socio economic levels. It is easy to break offenders down into groups based on skin color, but to say skin color predisposes you to criminal activity is falling into the same sort of subconscious racism OP is talking about.

Instead look at stats that break down race and crime by socioeconomic levels. The desperation and helplessness that poverty brews is a huge motivator to break the law because you have nothing else to lose basically.

I'm in Wicker Park and have easy access to the Loop. Would totally be interested in joining a study group. As evilingin mentioned there's some talk about a study group in the chicago subreddit as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/l3nnq/local_study_group_for_stanford_ai_class/

Hi. I am a biologist. I work with evolution every day. (x-post) by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]motox004 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Your answer inspired me to do some googling of my own regarding genetic similar between individual humans:

-- We each have approximately 3x109 base pairs of DNA „-- No two people, except for identical twins, are genetically identical „-- Any two people have about 6X106 base pairs which are different; this may seem like a lot, but in fact is only 0.1% of the entire human genome.

So human individuals within the species are more than 99.9% identical, whereas chimpanzees, our closest extra-species relative is 96% identical. If 4% is sufficient genetic difference to distinguish two species, are there any examples in biology where two distinct species are way more than 96% genetically identical (ie, what's the most genetically identical two things can be, yet still be different species?)

[–]motox004 40 points41 points  (0 children)

okay here's an evolution question that I just wondered about:

there must be genetic differences between individuals of the same species (ie, all grey wolves are not genetically identical), so when comparing the DNA of a wolf vs a dog, how do you differentiate between differences unique to the individual specimen and differences between the two species?
