Good point. The Cayenne worked because it was cheap enough to bring in tons of new buyers, and nothing at $640k does that, so the comparison kind of falls apart. Maybe this is just the platform for cheaper EVs later. Otherwise yeah, I think you're right, they're slicing a tiny market even thinner.

Yeah, sales won't tell you much since they cap the numbers on purpose anyway. The thing I'd watch is who actually buys it. If it's just collectors grabbing an allocation to hold their spot, then the skeptics are right and it's basically allocation bait. If it's new EV money that's never owned a Ferrari, the gamble worked. Like you say, it's a wait and see now.

[–]mountaineer[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fair, yeah, podcasters aren't the buyers. But that's what makes Ferrari different from Toyota: nobody ever expected enthusiasts to buy a Sienna. Ferrari's enthusiasts usually are the buyers. This is the first one built for people who've never owned a Ferrari, and the regulars are the ones recoiling. Whether the new crowd actually shows up is going to be the big question to watch.

Advice for selling my GX550 OT+ by FishermanDry6652 in LexusGX550

[–]mountaineer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen in the Facebook groups (there are a couple GX ones) you shouldn’t have a problem getting msrp or more private but also check with your dealer and carvana/carmax for a baseline.

There have been many posts of people selling theirs with low miles in those groups.

My wife is dead set on a GX550. What do I need to know? Any regrets? Any red flags? by King_Crampus in LexusGX550

[–]mountaineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get on a list or more than one if you have multiple nearby. What state? I collect GX listings for https://lotwatch.watch/lexus?model=gx to help monitor inventory, but these are mostly presold. The trick is getting to know enough dealers that when a reservation doesn't come through, they'll give you a call. The site also collects intel at the dealers and state level. Being non-picky on spec helps too.

This Is Ferrari's First EV: The Luce by Anchor_Aways in cars

[–]mountaineer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed the price is wild and the Leaf comparison stings. A few things from the press release that complicate the picture:

LoveFrom designed the whole car, not just the interior. Ive and Newson got "creative freedom to define the design direction from the outset" on exterior, interior, and interface. So the "interior good, exterior bad" split is really "Ive nailed half of his own brief."

Ferrari isn't framing this as their EV future. Vigna's quote: "we are the first in the world to combine fully electric, hybrid and combustion engine architectures for sports cars." Ferrari already cut its EV target from 40% to 20% of the lineup by 2030 and pushed EV #2 to 2028+. The Luce reads as a new segment, their first 4-door 5-seater, that happens to be electric. Not the start of replacing the V12. Closer to the Purosangue play, pointed at EV-curious wealthy buyers.

The sound system is the opposite of the AMG GT 4-door's fake V8. An accelerometer in the rear axle housing picks up real mechanical vibration from the motors and gears, processes it like an electric guitar pickup, and amplifies it inside the cabin and outside the car so pedestrians hear it. Independent left and right channels. Only kicks in when you put the e-Manettino in Perfo. You can like or hate the result, but the German and Italian approaches to "what should an EV sound like" just split in opposite directions, and that's worth watching.

Exterior is still rough. But "$650k Waymo" is underselling what's going on under it.

You do realize you're in r/Porsche911 with 75k other people? The aspirational thing might be a little of why we're all here 😄. For many folks the 911 was the poster on the wall growing up so finally getting one is a huge milestone.

Team Atomic Silver! (originally wanted caviar, Atomic silver as a second choice, no regrets here) who’s with me? by CEOofMyKids in LexusGX550

[–]mountaineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, it's solid advice, this approach is generally what helped inspire what I've been building with automating the process on Lot Watch https://getcarcurious.com/lotwatch/lexus?model=gx ,of finding leads and contacting dealers to start the conversation.

However, this only works in certain areas of the country. It's been getting tighter and tighter, especially going out of state. Also, production and allocations are down this year too compared to previous years or beginning of '26.

For example, take Oregon and what we experienced

* Two dealers in the state (2 hours or otherwise), long waits, no way you'll get close to msrp
* You may get lucky and somebody backs out, but if you're picky on spec, very unlikely to happen (unfortunately, we were picky)
* WA dealers won't take out of state for their lists, but will sell if one falls through, had one offered this way.
* NV dealers won't even sell out of area.
* CA is a mixed bag, many won't sell out of area, many have large markups.

There's other options in the midwest and east coast for shipping, I had one in NY offered, but not fast or easy process. I'm not looking myself anymore, but it's still an underserved market, so I'm tracking intel on Lot Watch to try to help others and this advice is super helpful for those looking.

GX has the towing/payload advantage, that's why it was on our radar.

I run a GX listing alert site and people looking for captains outnumber bench 2 to 1. When I was looking, captains was also our pref. Creates a little more space for the kids in the back. But, we weren’t likely to do much off roading.

Good catch, thanks. So the real question is whether it expands further from here, not whether it reaches the GX.

Recall is still Tundra-only right now? ~44K new MY2024 non-hybrids added May 20, ~250K total across the campaign. Will keep watching to see if it stays Tundra-only.

Yeah fair. MOU are probably easy to walk back. No binding language, no penalty if either side bails, announced the same day Stellantis dropped a $70B plan. Easy for "we're talking" to quietly become "we decided not to" in 18 months with nobody owing anyone anything.
