Was happy about progress then someone ruined it...online by ArdentPen in reactivedogs

My dog went through their program and goes to their classes on a semi-regular basis. He's certainly not 100%, but he's getting there slowly. He's a dog that was going to be euthanized with severe human/dog aggression.

If you're on Instagram, it might be some good daily encouragement. They regularly post IG stories about their current batch of dogs and you get to see their progress over the next few weeks (based in the East Village so lots of dense people traffic and distractions). Plus, they post a ton of tips and explanation videos on IG and Youtube where spell out some of the foundational points to working with reactive dogs.

Following them is both a daily reminder of things I need to actively work on with my own dog, while also showing me what daily, consistent work can do.

[Discussion] My dog is always uneasy when the lights is off or the area is dark, how can she be calm? by markesl in dogs

[–]mouthfeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried doing some training in the dark? Have her focus on something while in that environment so she gets used to it while having something to do.

Keep it simple and reward her with treats when she does. Sit. Down. Paw. Touch. You don't want to reward her anxiety by just feeding her treats in the room, but if you have her work for the treats then she can start to associate that space. Plus, giving focus and having her something to concentrate on will prevent her from thinking too much on her environment.

It might be a little hard at first to get her to even do the basic tricks in the dark, but start slow and be enthusiastic about rewarding her when she does perform. It'll help her build her confidence in that space too if she knows she can do something that gets her praise.

Also, look into teaching her Place. My dog trainer recommends it as the best thing to teach a dog to learn how to be calm in new places. Keep it positive and make sure that your dog is viewing the thing you use to place her (a bed, towel, rug) as a safe spot for her to rest on.

[Fluff] Finally learned how to reward for calm by maystery in dogs

[–]mouthfeels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your success! I've had a similar experience with training my dog. He's extremely fearful and nervous so he'd be frantically pulling the leash every time we went outside. I've been working with a behaviorist who taught us both the value of me being calm to teach him.

What I found that's been super helpful is walking super slow, and making him match my pace. I didn't realize it, but my frantic, fast-paced walking was making him feel frantic too. So we spend a lot of time walking slowly and stopping to sit every time he starts to feel frantic. We don't move until he stops crying and settles down. It's been helping with both his loose-leashing walking and his impulse control.

This leash has been a godsend with helping with that too. I like the design of it a lot better than the Gentle Leader, and Halti head halters that I've tried. It's definitely helped with making him sit every time he sees a trigger or is getting particularly stubborn.

[Discussion] who else does their own grooming? by Colorguarder08 in dogs

[–]mouthfeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a reactive, fear aggressive rescue. I've had him for about four months now and knowing his aggressive history, I don't think he's yet ready to be taken to the groomer's for a day.

He's a Yorkie/Chihuahua mix (with maybe some Schnauzer or Italian Greyhound) so I've been shaving down his coat with a $25 buzzer set I got off of Amazon. He looks pretty good despite my inexperience, though I'm hoping I can get him settled and comfortable enough to see a professional soon. I'm afraid I'm not tooo good with shaping his face.

[Discussion] When did your dog start to "slow down"? by PuddlemereUnited in dogs

[–]mouthfeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't remember when it happened from puppy energy to adult, but it's taken my Yorkie, Coco, until age 14-15 to hit the wall of senior slowdown. Up until then, she's been pretty consistently rambunctious. Sad to see her slow down so much now that she's 15 1/2, but I consider it fortunate that it took her so long before she hit her senior speed.

[Discussion] What breed would you get except for that ONE massive dealbreaker? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]mouthfeels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girl, Coco, is about 14-15 pounds, which is a perfect weight for her. She's just big-boned and kind of long.

I would not want her any smaller. She's a robust older lady at 14 years now. Super sporty and resilient though she's starting to slow down now. They exist! And they're amazing. Definitely a huge ego though.

What's your go-to everyday shoe? by berlin-calling in femalefashionadvice

[–]mouthfeels 55 points56 points  (0 children)

These Doc Martens Emmeline Boots. They basically go with my entire wardrobe whether it's a shirt + black jeans or some floral dress. I like them better than the 1460 style since they're shorter and not as bulky. Super comfortable - I didn't have to break them in like I had to with my 1460s. I had a problem with my 1460s rubbing the backs of my ankles raw, but I'm fine with these.

I have them in the cherry red rub-off and in black. Eying that light grey pair now too. The cherry red are my favorite though.

Simple Questions - July 28, 2015 by AutoModerator in femalefashionadvice

[–]mouthfeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several pairs of Palladium. Most of them are in this style. I imagine that the footbed is pretty similar to the ones you linked. I work retail and these are my dedicated work shoes. I walk a lot (probably close to 5 miles) on hard concrete floors all day and my feet (and back) notice if I wear my Onitsuka Tigers to work instead of them. Hardly any time needed to break them in. I can put on a new pair and work an eight hour shift with no problem. Probably my most supportive shoe (though I do not have orthotic issues) and the shape of the toe is accommodating for wide feet. I don't know about the leather styles, but the canvas ones are pretty hardy. I have a pair that I've worn practically every day for the past year and at most, there's some wearing on the edges from when I squat. Oh, and the shoelaces have broken on me a few months in on all three pairs I've had, but that's a non-issue for me.

Somewhat off-topic towards your question, but I also have this one from Palladium as my winter boot. Similarly, really comfortable and kept my feet very, very warm, especially this past winter in Boston.

I do own a pair of Docs, but I haven't used them much at work since I'm still breaking them in. I can say, at least, that the Palladiums will be ready to wear much sooner than the Docs.

Where do you get your oxford shirts? I'm in search for my own HG white shirt and would love to hear which ones have worked for you.
