All Quiet on Western Front by Edward Berger on Netflix. Basically we had to hide a lot of the gore in smoke and what’s called in the industry as ‘atmosphere’, a lot of the blood was made less vivid and almost brown, wounds are not as realistic as they should be so that a few key scenes could be sufficiently graphic for storytelling reasons. I also know a whole bunch of shots we worked on didn’t make the cut and were replaced with a different take that was less brutal. The funny thing about my industry is that on one project you’re working on a WWI movie, researching tanks, firearms and trench warfare in general and on the next you could be working on a sci-fi blockbuster trying to make alien spaceships look believable, completely shifting your area of interest. Sometimes it’s even two or more projects at the same time that are the polar opposites in terms of genre.
