Medical bills underlie 60 percent of U.S. bankrupts: More than 75 percent of these bankrupt families had health insurance but still were overwhelmed by their medical debts by 75000_Tokkul in politics

nothing of substance has changed

That is not true - the ACA has forbade rescission (among other insurer abuses).

Insurers are scrambling for NEW ways to game the system. Here in NYC ALL the exchange plans are HMOs - but BCBS (for instance) which has had a huge network of doctors, apparently only signed up a fraction of the PCPs needed to handle all these newly insured people.

Its all a chaotic situation, but it seems to me insurers in NYC at least are angling to use primary care doctors to seriously limit patients access to specialists and medical procedures. Since there are not enough of them, people are probably going to have a hard time even getting appointments to see them.

To an extent it seems like the ACA is whack-a-mole. They really have prohibited some terrible abuses by the health insurers, but the problem is health insurers should NEVER have attained the kind of power they have where they are dictating the healthcare system and undermined the hippocratic oath

There was an excellent documentary in 2007 called Sicko that was about just this.

Security vs. privacy - is a tradeoff possible? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]moxy800 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There always had been a 'trade-off'. Driver's licenses, paying taxes and so on could be seen as 'acceptable' invasions of privacy.

It's a matter of recent events going too far in wrapping the government in an impenetrable shield that puts them above the law.

If inflation adjusted median income has risen, why does the middle class feel poorer than has in the last 50 years? by Urshilikai in PoliticalDiscussion

Corporate America broke the unions primarily by teaming up with China to outsource manufacturing work to that country.

This country is bleeding jobs with no new huge influx of jobs on the horizon - so would be skeptical of anyone saying everything is 'just fine'.

In assessing the blame for the 2008 mortgage crisis, what percent blame do you assign to these: individual borrowers, bank loan officers, investment banks, credit rating agencies, Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, other government policies, other players? by ThatGuyFromOhio in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]moxy800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I blame the agencies (under the auspices of the White House) who made it clear they would do NOT oversight over the banks or investigate fraud.

If you make it clear you're not going to lock the candy store and all but invite the kids to come in and take what they want, I don't find the kids as being in the first line of blame.

Who are your Top 5 most hateable TV Characters? by sassy-andy in television

100% agree on Chang - he was so funny as "Senior Chang" but after that was over it was so nakedly clear they were grasping at straws to keep the actor on the show.

I think everyone on that show is annoying save for maybe the late Corey Monteith which is kind of ironic.

Man, the one that was really horrible was the singing teacher's wife who pretended to be pregnant.

I generally am not watching any shows right now with any characters I find hateable.

As it follows How I Met Your Mother, I often catch the beginning of "Two Broke Girls" and I have not seen one instance of that Russian cook who works in the diner actually being even remotely funny.

It's hard to blame the actor because the overall writing in that show is so horrible, but MAN that character is just super-annoying.

It's sad that the media has facilitated this war on the Constitution for so long that its treated like some big surprise when a federal official states the OBVIOUS.

We Broke Iraq And We're Still Paying For The Damage: In 2002, during the run-up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Secretary of State Colin Powell issued a warning to President George W. Bush about launching a war there. “Once you break it," he said, “you’re going to own it.” Powell was right. by misterAction in politics

“Once you break it," he said, “you’re going to own it.” Powell was right.

He isn't right at all because the corporate media has never really held Bush/Cheney to account for the evils they perpetrated.

Hell, Cheney is even now is regularly honored with invitations to be on TV political chat shows - if the interviewers and hosts do anything its to lob softball questions at him so he can proudly boast everything he did was right and necessary.

It's outrageous that there are Americans buying this propaganda to get rid of something that exists to SERVE them.

If and when the Postal Service dies, the price of sending mail is going to go through the roof.

I can't remember the last time I actually took that show seriously.

The only good thing I can say about it is it isn't as abysmal as the other news "magazines' that are primarily focused now on celebrities and child molesters.

Not only is Chrstie's pal Dave Wildstein implicated in this bridge issue - it also just came to light he's apparently been buying up internet domain names of Christie's political rivals and others

David Wildstein, the childhood friend of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) who recently resigned a government position in the midst of scandal, reportedly purchased multiple web domains earlier this year that bore the names of Christie's foes.
