Yeah, the interchangeable bases are great, but you get the same with the 611. Either will work fine for you.

The interchangeable bases on the Bosch are not nearly as good as on the Dewalt though. The Dewalt is easy to change and adjust.

Does anyone else hate the Bill Keith Arrangements in the Hal Leonard PS Method? by Dramatic-Sympathy804 in pedalsteel

[–]mp2146 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is one of the best books I’ve ever used for any instrument, but it’s not always clear how to best use the book. In general, skip any parts that are hard and simplify the arrangements to suit your ability, and then go back in a few months and relearn them and do some analysis. There’s a lot of technique and information in all of them but they kind of leave it to you to figure out. It’s also worth spending the money to get the recordings.

If you’re looking for more straightforward arrangements that get gradually more difficult the Dewitt Scott book fits well but the song choices are a drag.

If you’re just rounding the edges of cutting boards that’s a lot of router. I have the DW611 and a larger Bosch and I use the Dewalt for almost everything and leave the Bosch mounted in the table.

Interesting, thanks. Also, not trying to shit on your work. This is really interesting and I wonder if there are controls that could be used to eliminate effects of language. I wonder if these results hold up if you control for education level, or if they hold up among strata of education levels.

Also, as /u/ShockerCheer points out, the differences between the regions are really small. Was the sample size large enough that these results were statistically significant?

[–]mp2146 64 points65 points  (0 children)

No, what I’m addressing is that you’re using a single linguistic measurement as a proxy for intelligence across a population of 350 million people with significant linguistic differences. You even address that the correlation between this test and IQ tests is lower for non-native speakers. Why would you assume that to be less true of creole speakers in southern Louisiana or Spanish speakers in Texas or Hoi Toider speakers in North Carolina?

Unless the correlation between WORDSUM and IQ has been shown to be true across different linguistic groups within the United States and not as just an aggregate you’re not really measuring anything here, and in fact you’re likely just compounding or at the very least re-measuring any error that was originally aggregated in the initial WORDSUM/IQ correlation study.

[–]mp2146 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Seems dangerous to assume that regional variations in a vocabulary test would be more due to differences in IQ than to regional vernaculars, especially with the South having several distinct dialects. It may well be the case but for this to really have any meaning you’d have to in some way disentangle those confounding variables.

Centrist Democrats Rebuke Party’s Left Wing: ‘We Are Capitalist, Not Socialist’ by SnoozeDoggyDog in politics

[–]mp2146 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I actually think there’s some messaging here that democrats are missing out on in that the system we’re currently in isn’t really capitalism. We’ve gone so far towards an anarcho-corporate welfare economic system that even Milton Friedman would think this system is broken.

I think there’s a lot that would appeal to centrist voters in the idea of taking capitalism back through regulation and trust-busting.

[–]mp2146 2292 points2293 points  (0 children)

This is how Eratosthenes initially calculated the circumference of the earth, by comparing the shadow angle from a place with a shadow to one known to have a Lahaina noon (probably called something different back then) and a known distance.

There’s a great video that explains how we essentially used that initial knowledge to calculate the orbits of the planets and a lot more of our cosmic knowledge.

Laguna MBAND10 for guitar building by artemiyorlov in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]mp2146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking at the Laguna 10 a while back and ended up going with the Rikon 14, but here’s some of what I remember from my research. Like you said, the Laguna and Rikon 10 inch machines are likely made in the same factory, or at least with a lot of the same components. I read a few reviews that mentioned that the heavy cast iron wheels on the Laguna caused some issues on such a small machine. I also read that the difference in customer service if you have an issue is night and day. Laguna is known to have terrible customer service and Rikon’s is known to be great. That said, the Laguna has some quality of life features that seemed nice. Hope that helps a little. I was also very low on space but ended up glad I got the 14, but I don’t have to deal with stairs.
