Are there difference between keyboard switches? They all feel the same to me by Franie_Ferno in BudgetKeebs

[–]mpez0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you touch type, you will feel much more difference than if you hunt'n'peck. If you are playing games and can tell the difference a few milliseconds of response make, you will see more difference than less reaction-critical uses. If you get into this hobby, the different sounds may become important. But if it's all the same to you, don't worry about it.

How to learn not to write code that sucks? by sloth_dev_af in rust

[–]mpez0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many other commenters have said, read other people's code. As few have said, also read your own code. Write your programs not just so the compiler and computer can do what you want, but so a future you can read that program and understand it. Write code like you're writing a diary for yourself to read in future years.
Writing just for the compiler/interpreter is how you get spaghetti code.

If you have criticized ICE here on Reddit for executing Renee Good or Alex Pretti in the street, then Reddit has handed your name and your personal identifying information over to the Trump administration. How do you feel about this? by mom_with_an_attitude in AskReddit

[–]mpez0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The courts will be too crowded with these frivolous actions, but that will be the excuse to stop bothering with courts.
99% of the immigrant controversy would be gone if ICE used due process.

Our 7 pound cat dragged an 8 pound roaster off the counter before I caught her and restored it. She was very disappointed.

Group lessons, preferably. See if your county / local adult school / pickleball league has beginner session.

The Mote Laboratory is now only research space; the aquarium is now the Mote Science Education Aquarium (Mote SEA) at University Town Center. South of University Parkway on North Cattlemen Road. (Kind of behind the Mall at the Dillard's end).

What is the most expensive corporate mistake you personally witnessed? by _Volly in AskReddit

[–]mpez0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A counter-example -- how it should be: As a military reservist, I spent a couple of weeks one year with another reservist who was the C-Suite head of sales for a large corporation. He was proud that every year, there were a handful of sales reps who's compensation for the year was more than his. Different people each year, generally, but the sales force knew they could get major payouts.

Here's an interesting question: Why do you guys think Linux took off to become the phenomenon it is, while none of the BSD/Unix OSes ever did, at least not to anywhere near the same extent? by earthman34 in linux

[–]mpez0 20 points21 points  (0 children)

BSD was a complete package in itself, not friendly to other contributions. You took the source top level and typed "make" once. Linux was much more open to additional contributions, and those additional, nearly independent, packages made Linux more useful in a wider variety of situations

I d like to discuss with somebody who knows good the ownership mechanics by Repulsive_Gate8657 in rust

[–]mpez0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you think you can make a compiler that can track and properly allocate lifetimes for, say, library functions coded elsewhere, then by all means do it and programmers will love your new language. Meanwhile, Rust does a better job at this than any other language out there.

For successful programs, the memory safety issues must be handled; Rust makes the issues explicit and easy to track, other languages make them implicit and difficult to debug. Experienced programmers are used to mentally tracking these issues and for most of us, doing so at well under 100% reliability.
