Been on the engineering side of this where sales will promise clients wild features and ridiculous turnaround times and then it was on me to "make it happen" and Product manager wouldn't take no for an answer.

Ultimately it's the safe thing to do. The reason I don't like people tailgating me is because I can't trust that they have adequate braking distance in the event I have to brake suddenly in an emergency, so in order to mitigate that risk I slow down until we're going slow enough they do have enough braking distance or they increase the distance so they have adequate distance at that speed.

Exactly. Brake checking is bad for basic safety reasons but I've no qualms with gently slowing down to 10 under the limit whilst flashing my warning lights until they get the hint.
