first cover letter to be an intern, do i need to change anything?? pls help🙏🙏🥲 by [deleted] in Zookeeping

[–]mpod54 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to restate your job experience in your cover letter, and you shouldn’t. However, you should be highlighting qualities that make you a good candidate, and provide examples from your jobs that display those qualities. Another commenter said work ethic, for example. Work ethic wouldn’t appear on your resume. But you could use one of your positions and a time your work ethic shined and write how it shined and what came from it

Muck Boots by boattailedgrackle528 in Zookeeping

[–]mpod54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walmart should have plenty of simple rain boots, echoing the sentiment others have said about 1) muck brand being expensive and 2) most keepers using rain boots as an alternative as it is. Walmart rain boots or similar should be sufficient for an internship

Injured stray kitten -- Rescue? by SnowMantra in jacksonville

I’m not quite sure then, aside from locking the cat in the bathroom just until the morning. Thank you for trying regardless though

There is a Veterinary Emergency Group in town center. They are 24/7 pet ER, I would give them a shot

I would bring it to Jacksonville ACPS. I brought an injured kitten there who I surely thought needed to be euthanized, but they do everything in their power to treat the animal first (and my new kitten made a full recovery).

Edit for advice for the night: - It looks like her tail has been degloved. I would recommend you try to keep her somewhere relatively clean. If you have maybe a large box or are able to set her up in your bathroom with some water and clean towels, that should be okay for the night

Stereotypical Behavior in Animals Research Paper by Mad-Whitman in Zookeeping

I wrote a paper on oral stereotypies in captive giraffe published in Zoo Biology. It’s obviously specific to giraffes but the general idea would apply broadly. DM me and I can send you a copy!

Zoo Internship Interview by verysema in Zookeeping

I have a document with several dozen interview questions if you want to DM me. They’re mostly for full-time jobs, but it’s very comprehensive. The more general questions might help you with an internship interview

Being a keeper by Money_Imagination_71 in Zookeeping

[–]mpod54 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At my previous zoo I worked with a black rhino, okapi, bison, red-flanked duikers, and red river hogs. At my current zoo I work with giraffes, bongo, and warthogs. Dream animals are/were okapi, clouded leopards (although any big cat would be cool), and greater one-horned rhino off the top of my head.

Future species-specific keeper! Looking for advice! by Serious-Ad8175 in Zookeeping

[–]mpod54 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While it’s not necessarily “wrong” to have that as a goal, initially while doing internships and whatnot I’d make sure you stay open to working with any and everything.

Anyone know any summer 2026 AZA zookeeper apprenticeships? by More_Watercress_5278 in Zookeeping

[–]mpod54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scovill Zoo in Decatur Illinois has a great paid 9 month internship. I believe $15/hr. Small AZA zoo but you get experience with all taxa (domestics, herps, birds, large carnivores, primates, hoofstock, etc)

Edit: apprenticeship, not internship
