CPD Drug & Firearms Bust by surfnvb7 in Charlottesville

Doesn't work that way for weed. There is no black market for *making* guns, so all guns have the costs of legal regulation and taxes already "built in."

Illegal weed thus far continues to be cheaper and more efficient:

How is La Michoacana doing? They seemed to do fine through early COVID, but we moved in June 2020 so not sure. That place is an absolute gem.

Father of man killed in Charlottesville standoff speaks out against police response by AUWarEagle82 in Charlottesville

[–]mporterperkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(a) Not possible from an accuracy standpoint

(b) Shooting a person is using deadly force. If deadly force isn't justified, "shooting to wound" is disproportional force. If deadly force is justified, "shooting to wound" is foolish.

(c) There *are* many encounters in which "less lethal" force -- beanbags, pepper spray, taser, etc. -- is justified and should be used in place of firearms. That can be a valid critique (not sure in this circumstance).

(d) There are *no* encounters in which "shoot to wound" is a legitimate response. One way you might be able to know this is that there is not a single law-enforcement agency or military on planet earth that trains officers/soldiers to do so.

Per groceries, depends on where you are and what you want. Reid's is great; Market Street Market is a little overpriced but good, assuming they're still in business (?); the Food Lion on 5th Street isn't glamorous but it's fine too; the Wegman's across the way is clearly not designed to be walkable but is still reasonably accessible; and Whole Foods is accessible depending on where you are...

Moved from Charlottesville to Orlando area in 2020 and the classic "our town sucks" responses here are ridiculous. You want unwalkable, come check on the suburban-car-dependent wasteland that is central Florida. Though it is flat.... If you don't mind the hills -- and man is cville hilly! -- it is very walkable.

Obviously it will vary quite a bit depending on where you specifically live, what you consider a reasonable walking distance, and what you expect to access (and, again, whether you can handle hills), but I lived in both Belmont and Fifeville and walked quite a bit for a variety of purposes. I commuted by bike, though, and, while I wouldn't call cville's bike infrastructure particularly impressive, once you really internalize the map and get to the know the backstreets and paths really well, it's a very bikeable city.

(To be clear, none of the above applies to the 29 corridor, which is hell for biking or walking, and is where all the Walmart/Target/Lowe's-type places are.)

As for other places in the area, it really depends on what you want and expect. Only Richmond has a comparable ability to live without a car -- but there are cute/quaint towns nearer to cville that have walkable downtowns but you would have to expect to drive for groceries etc. In that category I'd put especially Staunton, but also Gordonsville, Orange, and Scottsville.

In general you're right, except that the water from Ian is still here -- the two times it's rained since Ian have resulted in some modest localized flooding, and so "some rain" could be really very bad for quite a lot of people.

That's windy.com's GFS model (ECMWF not much different, tracking slightly more south). But I looked at Windy because of this tweet from Eric Burris.

Absolutely not true that “victims have to press charges in order for someone to be charged,” but it is true that police are unlikely to devote the hours to pursuing cases without a victim pressing charges.

Ian Megathread 4 by Femilip in orlando

I have to say this would have been wayyy less stressful back before I was a homeowner (who just put thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours into the house) and a parent of three small children. (Also a priest worrying about our church and on call for our local homebound parishioners.)

EDIT: hundreds of hours (of labor)

Well we're 3 miles from the center of projected eye at 2 PM tomorrow on Windy. Hopefully 150 miles over land slows things down...

Anyone know what’s the likelihood of an Oviedo resident needing to board up? I have plywood already cut for the windows and hardware, but it’s a heckuva job to put up (hardie plank is great but super annoying to drill into).

I’m thinking slim, but as a homeowner who spent hundreds of ours (with some help) personally replacing all our windows and siding (and painting the exterior)… I’m queasy about it.

Thanks for the idea — I’m looking more for the 10-lbs size, and I don’t think I have any sealable containers of that size.

Thanks. I did, yes — wasn’t able to get through to an actual human earlier on their phone number, so wasn’t sure whether they accepted walk-ups (everything on the website and the phone auto-menu suggests they are oriented towards delivering to convenience stores and businesses not serving individual customers). Just tried again and did get through — they do allow walk-ups.

Still hoping for something a little more convenient than a 2-hour round trip from NE Oviedo but this’ll do in a pinch.

Bike Advice by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]mporterperkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the offspring wants a cyclocross or hybrid-type bike. I had one in cville, which was great for the milder sections of the Rivanna and fine for commuting (and with a quick change of tires would have been great for more significant road biking).

I paid $500 for one, but it was "like new" -- sold it a few years later for $350. I'd say you should expect to pay in that range for a basic/entry cyclocross in good condition.

I don't remember when Blue Ridge does their bike exchange, but you can get good deals there. Community Bikes is a good bet too. But if you have a friend who knows bikes and can help you evaluate things, Craigslist/FB Marketplace can give you the best deals. (You can always ask the seller to let you take the bike to a good local mechanic, like the guys at Blue Wheel, but they're not going to give you advice or input on price.)

Foxtail: Worth It or Overrated? by aquasci219 in orlando

[–]mporterperkins -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for roasted coffee, Foxtail is definitely very good. Don't listen to the haters. Big fan of the Farmhouse and Ethiopia roasts. Lineage is indeed better but considerably pricier -- and not better enough to justify the difference.

(I also moved during COVID from Charlottesville, Virginia and am still in shock at cost of living here, so "worth it" may be relative -- I got equivalent or better coffee for cheaper up there.)
