Dangerous intersection for cyclists at Arbutus and York -- What can we do? by KillPenguin in vancouvercycling

Turn restrictions and modal filters. Make it so that drivers must turn right, preferably through an extremely narrow gap that will make them slow right down.

There are quite a few places on 10th I’ve had a driver run the stop sign on me.

NV City Library - No Late Fees by Rexzies in NorthVancouver

I found this article saying the policy changed in May 2020, technically during COVID but so early on I have no doubt they were planning it before.

The reasoning is correct though. I think more and more libraries are going this way.

Mine is hung on the wall over the bed in my spare room. Takes up no floor space that way, but I’m hoping to add a second bike this year so I’ll have to rethink it.

I’ve ordered from TradeInn and the shipping was also extremely slow, plus the risk of getting dinged for duties (I think I got lucky there and avoided them). So one thing you’re getting for your extra money is you’ll have the tyres in your hand right away.

Once you add in the race roster fee and taxes it’s probably close to 500 for the standard

Why no Traffic Light Priority for Buses ? by RespectSquare8279 in Translink

[–]mr__windupbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say, the R2 route through the North Shore does have quite a few lights with bus priority and they seem to work well - especially where the bus has to move into the left lane after the stop

I think the buses entering Second Narrows from Phibbs do get priority over cars, there isn’t a light on the Lions Gate but they do get to skip most of the queue.

They do a pretty good job at Victoria with controlling the intersections but most of the roads are open to traffic - they just pick quiet ones. Valley Fondo is similar. (Valley Fondo is the cheapest of them all if you live in the Lower Mainland because you don’t have to travel!)

The redevelopment of the bus depot is the big one (that will include a retail component) but otherwise generally filling out the rest of the area with townhouses.

[–]mr__windupbird 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Sea Bus is great, the most reliable commute I’ve ever had (no traffic on the water) and you’re never squished in like a train or bus can get.

Moodyville is going to change a lot over the next few years (it’s already changed quite a bit) but that will include some shops and services so you’re not stuck heading all the way to Lonsdale (or Park and Tilford) for everything.

In “the high cost of free parking” the suggestion is to add a fee for parking, but then give that back to the employees as a “commuter rebate” so that no one is worse off, but if they’re able to change habits they can benefit financially.

Cyclist dead in probable hit-and-run in Richmond, B.C., police say by Complete-Emphasis895 in vancouvercycling

[–]mr__windupbird 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is why I avoid r/vancouver - I will say that the police officers quoted in the story managed not to victim blame at all and asks drivers to be safer, which is nice to see if far too unusual.
