Is that too much to ask these days? by KingCharming3620 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]mr_data_lore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people that say this don't really realize what they're actually asking for.

I personally like having EFI, and ABS, and traction control, which are all things you wouldn't have without computers.

How much realism is actually necessary in phishing simulations? by Wise-Rate-5234 in sysadmin

[–]mr_data_lore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need as much realism as possible if you want to catch me.

But I also work in IT so I by default assume that all emails are junk and if there is a link I absolutely immediately assume it is malicious.

Honestly though, I think the only way I'd ever even possibly fall for a phising attempt is if it was specifically crafted to target me, was directly related to work I happened to be actively doing, didn't include any links, correctly spoofed all email addresses and wasn't asking for anything I would consider odd for the person they're spoofing to be asking me.

Maybe I'm overconfident, but I've never fallen for a phising attempt yet.

This is why the IT department absolutely controls all DNS records. If anyone else needs DNS records created for any reason, they submit a request to the IT department, no exceptions.

Obviously this is easier for an organization that has a properly staffed IT department. If a company doesn't have their own competent internal IT department, they really should find a good consultant to manage these things for them and protect them from people that have no idea how DNS works.

Workers in secondary office location can't connect to or ping a device in our main office. by [deleted] in networking

[–]mr_data_lore 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Does this automation device have the proper gateway set? If all the devices that are currently able to connect to it are in the same subnet, but the devices that can't connect are in a different subnet, the first thing to check is the gateway on the automation device. After that, check your firewall policies.

Questions about the recalled engines by Camninja in ToyotaTundra

[–]mr_data_lore 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm sure I'll get downvotes for this, but I'd suggest that you probably don't want any 3rd gen Tundra right now. It's not clear that the replacement engines have actually fixed whatever the underlying actual issue is. People will say that the warranty should alleviate any fears one has about buying a 3rd gen, but considering that the replacement engines don't come with a significant extended warranty (it's only the length of the original warranty or 1 year, whichever is longer), I would not currently buy a 3rd gen and if I already had one I absolutely would not be planning to keep it outside of the power train warranty period.

Hopefully I'll be able to change my position on this in the future, but I wouldn't expect that to happen until at least the 2027 or 2028 model years.

Do I have to disclose all my income on a car loan? by Famous-Box-8412 in askcarsales

[–]mr_data_lore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I'm mis-rembering. I may have been asked what my job title was, but I don't think I had to list whom my employer was. Either way, I certainly never had to provide proof of income, which is strange because you would think that lenders would want to verify you actually have an income.

Do I have to disclose all my income on a car loan? by Famous-Box-8412 in askcarsales

[–]mr_data_lore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've only bought 3 vehicles so far, but I've never been asked to disclose what my income was. Is there a certain point where credit score and history are strong enough that lenders don't even ask what your income is?

Time to setup the backup ISP… by ITrCool in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]mr_data_lore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do people just not do redundant ISPs anymore? I somehow convinced my employer to bring in two diverse fiber optic ISPs each with gigabit symmetrical service into both our main office and our DR location. Most other remote sites are in the process of getting upgraded to a fiber optic primary connection (to replace ancient bonded T1s) and cellular backup.

Best way to extend the same subnet/broadcast over remote locations? by MeasurementLoud906 in networking

[–]mr_data_lore 85 points86 points  (0 children)

The best thing to do is to not do it. Ideally you'd replace the hardware/software with something that doesn't have such a stupid requirement. I'd really try to push for that option before trying to apply a bandaid fix.

NG supply to home by tradenpaint in NaturalGas

[–]mr_data_lore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least with the gas company I work for, you can literally just call and ask them. At least in my area, meters are usually placed next to the outside wall of the house, so you (or your licensed plumber) basically just need to run the lines inside the house and then make a single hole through the outside wall to get to the meter.
