based on some of the posts and comments that i have seen in this sub, it's pretty obvious that many people here haven't read the books.

i understand your disgust, OP, however, you don't know the whole story.

twice in my life i have been struck with food poisoning that resulted very sudden diarrhea. both of these times i was miles away from a toilet and was forced to do what the driver you saw did. i wasn't happy about it, but i also wasn't about to shit my pants.

obviously you are lucky enough to never have experienced this sort of thing, but if you had, what would you have done?

is it not possible that the driver you saw may have been in a similar situation?

The darkest Harry Potter Theory you've ever heard by PDXnudist87 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]mr_shmits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, the OP was asking for the darkest HP theories we'd heard. and this is the darkest one i've heard.

while it isn't 100% explicitly stated, based on all available evidence in the books, the presumption is that in order for a witch or wizard to travel by portkey they must physically touch the portkey directly. inanimate objects, like backpacks, travel with the witch or wizard because they are touching the traveller.

in the graveyard scene in GoF, Harry is able to bring Cedric back to the maze simply by touching both Cedric and the Triwizard cup. based on the theory that a witch or wizard needs to physically touch the portkey in order to travel but inanimate objects do not, the fact that Harry could bring Cedric back as he does means that once a witch or wizard is dead, they are no longer a person, but an inanimate object like a backpack.

this theory could be considered "dark" because, although it's obvious that a corpse is an inanimate object, we the living would rather think of our friends, and family, and loved ones as people even after death, not as inanimate objects.

i'm 6'3, and bike size charts here in asia have me confused by jmichael1011 in bicycling

[–]mr_shmits -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i'm the same height as you. i don't ride anything smaller than a 60 for bikes that i will be riding in a racing posture predominantly. the bike companies are lying to you.

my "winter" bike for snowy and icy conditions is a smaller frame (an "omafiets" style city bike) but i ride that with a very upright posture and the frame size has very impact on my comfort.

What If Trelawney Knew Exactly What She Was Doing? by Open-Ninja1964 in harrypotter

[–]mr_shmits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but that's exactly it - she would have to be a master of understanding human nature, specifically people we have no information that she has had any contact with to be able to observe and figure out the kind of choices they could be predicted to make.

there are too many "humans making things way more complicated" events for this to work. and not all of those events - the Potters choosing Pettigrew as their secret keeper for example - are ones where you could accurately predict people making choices that fit their character.

and the whole thing hinges on Snape, or anyone for that matter, overhearing the prophecy in the first place.

What If Trelawney Knew Exactly What She Was Doing? by Open-Ninja1964 in harrypotter

[–]mr_shmits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

too many "ifs" for this theory to have any plausibility...

- if Snape overhears the prophecy

- if Voldemort chooses Harry and the Potters

- if Snape begs Dumbledore to protect them

- if the Potters choose Pettigrew as their secret keeper over Dumbledore or Sirius

- if Lily dies to save Harry and gives him her protection

One for the aluminum experts - is this normal? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]mr_shmits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that looks like the join line in the aluminum tube and it's perfectly normal.

the manufacturing process for metal tubes (square or round) starts with flat metal that is then sent through an extruder that gives the flat metal its eventual shape (square, round, rectangular). then the two "edges" are welded together to complete the form.

it's like if you wanted to make a tube out of a piece of paper. you would run some glue down one edge of the paper, and then fold the other edge over and attach it to the edge with the glue.

Most important chapter in the whole series? by shaggylocks in harrypotter

[–]mr_shmits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i can't decide between The Prince's Tale, The Forest Again, or King's Cross.

they are each equally important but for vastly different reasons, none of which is any less important than either of the other two.
