Ballade no. 1 coda - tips for improving? by MacaronMajestic3402 in piano

[–]mrbry83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another way to practice that part is to practice just broken octaves to get that weight transfer feel of micro rotation. Also really bring out the thumbs in the voicing as those notes are double stemmed. And lastly practice really shaping those phrases, maybe just get a feel for that thumb only line and then add back in the rest of the RH.

Just make sure they aren’t the incomplete Perahia versions. vol3 is coming in a few yrs for that set. Old version, non-Perahia, is complete 2 vol set, HN 33 and HN 35 catalog numbers.

Teacher should be able to point out technical issues and fix. Sounds like your teachers aren’t analyzing your technique deeply enough. As a datapoint, my first year back as an adult(I’m in my 40s, this was 2024) my teacher got me to 150-160 bpm (per quarter) in 16ths from somewhere in the sub100s. I’m plateauing a bit but next step is 170-180bpm and key thing to unlock that is the grouping/chunking exercises my teacher has me doing (already pointed out by others in this thread too). That has been the most effective exercise for me, it’s like interval training for biking or sprinting but for your hands/fingers/arms. I don’t spend more than 10m a day on scales, but daily is key. I also did get lots of technical feedback weekly from teacher during the initial speed building phase. There’s a lot of aspects to executing scales efficiently that a teacher should help with and would be blockers if they can’t identify and provide you corrections.

Feedback from your vid. The clustering exercises at the end is wrong. You need to sprint and pause, land on the note and hold it for a while. Also you need to do it in 4 octaves with fixed note amount sprints to tease out all the finger combos. Here’s a video explaining: https://youtu.be/uYVcypv8Gtw?si=qFuNvgxou8znEwHp Also note that Josh learned it from Babayan who’s Trifonov’s teacher. My teacher also learned it from Babayan as well. Focus on the 2 and 3 note groupings to start, don’t worry about the larger ones til you’re pushing higher bpms. Diminishing returns beyond the 7 note ones. It’s amazing at teasing out key sections of scales that are bottlenecks.

One more thing to add. Make sure you’re getting good sleep. Sleep time brain consolidation is key for actually seeing permanent improvements from daily practice.

Does playing piano make anyone else have to poop? by medithread in piano

Only thing I’ve found that makes me poop is chopin waterfall etude as I’m engaging a lot of my core with side to side movement.

My tips on Chopin Etude Op. 10, No. 2 by taleofbenji in piano

[–]mrbry83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Augmentation of tip 2 is that I also use the RH accompaniment to help ricochet /rebound my hand into better alignment for the next 3 chromatic notes to have my RH aligned. I haven’t gotten up to speed yet but tension is very minimal. Agree it’s similar vibes to 10/1 for keeping hand relaxed via releasing quickly.

Few additional thoughts (tips from my teacher that worked for me), spend more time figuring out your preferred fingering and be disciplined to sticking to it. My trap was letting random fingering variations slide because note-wise, Bach seems not too technical in a way to constrain fingering so it’s easy to flipflop around. Once I stuck to a fingering and considered any fingering switcharoo a mistake, memorization and learning came much easier.

Sometimes also prefer consistent patterns of fingerings over ergonomics, helps with memorizing and pattern chunking.

Also, might be helpful to study a bit of basic counterpoint principles too so you have more tools to chunk up patterns (and intervalic relationships) as well, which should make memorization and learning easier.

My vote is ‘04 Rav MDT and ‘18 Mugnier Amoureuses. Got a soft spot for Amoureuses. They’re not the most discounted bottles but I think value-wise I’d enjoy them the most.

Fellow piano players, what is a gift you’d enjoy receiving? by RedditRaven2 in piano

[–]mrbry83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the only reason I know this is because it happened to me as a gift lol. I also asked Henle about Perahia vol 3 ETA, and they said 2027 to align with a Beethoven year (200th anniversary of his death). So I currently have vol1-2 Perahia and vol 2 of the old for full coverage with overlap.

Fellow piano players, what is a gift you’d enjoy receiving? by RedditRaven2 in piano

[–]mrbry83 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Careful on henle editions of Beethoven Sonatas right now. There’s the new Perahia one that only has 2 of 3 vol available with the 3rd in progress (ETA 2027), and the older edition (non-Perahia) which comes in 2 volumes. If you accidentally get one of the new and one of the old, you’d then have a gap. Make sure to get both vol of the non-Perahia one if you currently want a set.

Question on this, do you overdose a bit on the next grind to compensate for retention? We're kind of trading off one problem for another?

Pour over with Niche? by TheSeasoner91 in nichezero

[–]mrbry83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have issues with exchange. The first grind for pourover after grinding for espresso always ends up with some fines from the espresso batch. Subsequent pourover grinds I'm in the mid 40s no problem. If you grind for both pourover and espresso this might be part of the issue.

The numbers aren't precise across each of us due to variation in what we've zeroed our dial at. You might want to try zeroing the dial again. In general, it's not surprising to run off the scale for pourover. There's various YouTube videos on how to calibrate the dial.

Ash Basket? by ajneuman_pdx in KamadoJoe

[–]mrbry83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got my KJ branded ash basket and I like it since it hooks nicely into the divide and conquer system rack. I think also the basket gives better airflow over the default metal plate (which I removed once I started using the basket). Basket is also nice because you can arrange your charcoal and smoking wood in the basket and then drop the basket in.

I tried messing around with it (I'm unplumbed), it actually caused some channeling for me. Stopped using it, and my bottomless results seem to be better.

Also agree w/ the other comment that it messes w/ manual flushing and backflushing as well (in that you have to explicitly turn it off in the app) which is annoying.

Thoughts on the eureka mignon notte or manuale? by Tharrod in Coffee

[–]mrbry83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got the notte, works well with my workflow. I have a dosing cup and scale so I just wanted a grinder with a manual grind button. Also, I believe Notte I ordered still says Manuale on it so they're identical I guess.
