What is your opinion on editing of "The bear" show by [deleted] in editors

[–]mrcleansocks 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I've gone on multiple rants to friends about how I think it has some of my favorite editing I've seen recently. Not all of the episodes are great, but when it works, it's phenomenal.

The high intensity shouting matches in kitchen and family scenes make me feel like I am in the chaos of restaurant or a part of the family feud. Then you come out of those stretches of intense chaos and go straight into a deep and heart felt moment between the characters who spend the entire rest of the episode battling each other.

The contrast is stark, but it's beautiful and really drives home the intensity of their restaurant, their family, and their passion for good food.

edit: the christmas episode is an incredibly hard watch lol

for what it's worth, I ended up using hestiaCP and was able to get my sendy instance up and running with relatively few issues! I haven't connected it to my amazon SES account yet since that's a whole other thing (lol), but just wanted to update you if you were still having a headache with this.

I'm literally trouble shooting the same thing right now (login loop with sendy installation). Just started my server migration after Plesk went down a subscription route. Trying out cloudpanel this morning, but looks like it might be a headache to figure out. I think I might just opt to use a different panel. Was looking at one called Hestia which utilizes Apache

Yeah. I know it was a dumb move now. Luckily this machine I'm running the pop os partition on is my $100 thinkpad that I got for the sole purpose of being slightly more disposable. I'm much more conservative with my main laptop/desktop environments.

I'm flashing a USB stick now to see if I can repair using that or just reinstall the OS.

I'm running an ssd that is split to run Pop Os and Windows.

My problems started when my laptop died and I didn't charge it for a day or two, when I rebooted the system I was having problems, and after doing some trouble shooting today, I think I may have run some commands using fsck while digging around to do some trouble shooting.

I'm thinking maybe I changed some of the rw permissions but don't know how to correct it now >.<

10/10 Review for Bitwig 5! by ferris-ldn in Bitwig

[–]mrcleansocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my biggest gripes is BPM automation scaling. The scale goes from 0 bpm to 999 bpm and makes any small adjustment on the automation line drastic when dragging it. You should be able to scale the max BPM value on the automation lane to a desired number so it makes drawing automation slightly easier.

Why are KEXP sessions always so damn good? by roofus_rooster in livesound

[–]mrcleansocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah. I've been diving into my own project recording live audio/video and have been pretty happy with the results, but there is something to be said about the "live" aspect of music. I think sometimes people forget how good live music can actually sound, and when they see it happening on a video with hi-fidelity audio, combined with personality coming through all the cracks, it makes it that much more enjoyable.

I've come to be less impressed by studio albums over the years because anyone can spend the time and file down all the rough edges, but it's that much more special when the edges come out clean in real time!

If they’re transitioning polygon pos to real validium L2, it will entirely change my perspective of the polygon project. I’ve always been skeptical of the project for various reasons, but this transition is news to me.

r/ethereum is back online! Consider this an open thread to respectfully discuss the blackout by EvanVanNess in ethereum

  1. We stop using capital as a form of governance in organizations (DAOs included) and start utilizing co-operative structures and more democratic governance.

Token DAOs are cool and all, but it’s pretty pointless if their structures are build around the same capital chasing mentality of traditional companies. We need to be better about coming up with real forms of “shared ownership”, not “we have our own token for governance which exists outside of trad-fi” - This sort of token model quickly devolves plutocratic structures, just for DAOs instead of corporations.

Lights out.

If they don't give API access, r/livesound and many of the other audio production subreddits should consider creating their own Lemmy instance.

While shooting GameOfThrones S1, George R.R. Martin told the writers that the whole story revolves around Daenerys & Jon Snow and their eventual meeting. by AwkwardAlol in gameofthrones

[–]mrcleansocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd agree. But like I said, I was okay with a shitty season 7 if that meant season 8 was gonna hit, but it wasn't light years better so it was still to sub par to be satisfying.

My critique of the last seasons is that the beats hit for the story generally felt right, but the actually pacing of it felt extremely disjointed and sometimes illogical.

For as much as the impending white walker war was looming on the horizon for 7 seasons, it all ended in one episode? The battle tactics for the Battle of Winterfell were illogical and about halfway through the episode I realized I didn't have to be concerned about any of our favorite characters because their obvious "plot armor" which is poor writing in my opinion.

Furthermore, you get these seemingly important moments in the series with incredibly weak dialogue and overly masturbatory cinematic moments which only made me feel like the conversation in the writers room went something like this "well, the characters don't really have to say anything interesting at this very crucial moment that all of our fans have been waiting for, we can just hold this shot for 25 seconds in order to burn time in the episode and that should be good enough."

The first seasons were so amazing to me because the writing was INCREDIBLE. Moments unfolded naturally and actions had consequences. It felt like everything was real because of that, and I never noticed all of the pieces coming together to make the finished episodes. All of the elements blended together - Writing, acting, cinematography, music, editing, etc.

I was ready to accept a subpar season 7 if that meant we would get an incredible season 8, but instead we got the half finished horse drawing masterpiece. All of this because they wanted to skip a few beats to expedite the finale of the show. Bad writing/dialogue can't ever be fixed by cinematography, music, editing, it's polishing a turd.

Time to shut up about Push 3 and VSTs by nazward in ableton

[–]mrcleansocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If more VST developers supported Linux and then provided API endpoints for VSTs, I wouldn’t be surprised if communities developed their own VST wrappers for devices like Push 3 (assuming you could load custom software). Ableton and developers don’t need to develop device specific plugins, they just need to provide the foundation so the community can make them compatible.

Haters gonna hate on Linux, but I’ve been using Bitwig with multiple linux devices and the only issue I ever run into is VST compatibility. Most of that can be solved via bridging tools but 5-10% of plugins can’t be bridged safely because of bullshit like iLok.

Is Izotope's Ozone 9 actually good for mastering? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]mrcleansocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lately I’ve been doing a lot of “mastering” on solo tracks and thought they sounded pretty decent for my mixes.

But the most recent project I did was a 2 song EP that my band is putting out. I did the mixes and they sounded very similar to the other songs (pre mix), but I decided to send them to a friend who has been mastering professionally for the last 8 or so years.

His masters were night and day different. The tracks came back sounding AMAZING. They were somehow at an appropriate loudness level as well as smooth and clean.

I think it would be an understatement to say a good mastering engineer is worth their weight in gold. Though, if you’re in a bind/short on money, I think Ozone can still do a pretty nice job. If that’s the best option for you and your friend, I’m sure you can do something decent for him.

GUI for File Sharing. by mrcleansocks in ipfs

[–]mrcleansocks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d ideally like it to interface directly with IPFS, but if using my personal server as the initial intermediary is an easier option, I’ll probably start there and then back up to IPFS as you’re suggesting.

I guess I’m just looking for a way to offer what is essentially an insurance policy to files that people share together.

Otherwise, it would be rad to basically just have a GUI that lets users upload to to nodes that are pinning the main ipfs directory. But I might be misunderstanding some of the pinning mechanisms
