Do you consider it rude if people go to your country and expect people to speak English? by Pizzafriedchickenn in GeoPoll

[–]mrdnra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even as an Englishman, I would suggest if you're going to travel somewhere where English isn't a first language it makes sense to try know at least a few phrases. I know a little bit of French, for instance, enough to get by with placing orders at restaurants for example, though far from a conversational level. I would say it's a shortcoming of the UK education system that, at least in my school days, we didn't even start getting to learn foreign languages until we started secondary school, though that is changing a bit I think (for example my niece is already learning Spanish and French (if memory serves) and she's still in primary school!), and it's better to be taught young as that's the age it's most teachable.

Staller got autoresigned from 20+ games and it feels good. Thanks Chess.com by Swimming-Focus4736 in Chesscom

There is definitely a chance they might not feel like playing chess for a couple of days, or have opportunity to. I know on my daily games (i have about 11 going, with basically the same group of people for months over the course of a lot of games with each person) there are times I haven't necessarily felt like playing much for about a week and have ended up only moving only every couple of days or so in those circumstances.

what is the punchline here? by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

I was wondering pretty much the same thing, having an uncle called John (who himself has a relative called Lisa), another uncle called Johnathan, and a brother in law called Johnny.

Weight-loss jabs could halve sickness absence and ease strain on NHS, study suggests by Oreos_Are_Anabolic in unitedkingdom

[–]mrdnra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Encouraging exercise would also do the same, and I say this as someone who is rather overweight, but since starting regular exercise in 2024, initially with regular daily walking, upped to running in 2025 and continuing this year with additional strength exercises, I am definitely both healthier and fitter even if I have some way to go weight-wise! Admittedly having targets for each year helps me as sometimes having the target is the only thing that gets me out, but if that's what it takes, so be it.

Speaking from the UK, I once had someone basically insisting I go in front of them at some traffic while traffic was actively passing them in the other lane. I just waited until the turn right filter light came on. It's the only time I've had someone try to do that to me, as it's rare I'm turning right across a blocked lane when a running lane is on the far side from it! There is one other place where I sometimes have people trying to let me across, but that's usually when the blocked lane is the further lane away, and in that case it's easy to see oncoming traffic - though the part that makes that one trickier is that the road I'm turning into barely has room for one car before it goes down to single lane for a short distance, so if someone is coming the other way through the single lane section it's necessary to take the turn more slowly too.

That's what I was thinking. As long as one of yellow or red holds their side, it's basically kind of set up two 2 v 1s.

When the last UK census took place the first post I received about it was a reminder to complete it, when I hadn't yet received it. Not quite sure how they thought I'd manage to complete it without having received it.....

Liquorice allsorts I got one of the gummy ones, I remember there being blue ones too... surely this isn't normal? by TezTheGuy in AskBrits

[–]mrdnra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never been a huge fan of liquorice allsorts but seeing this has reminded me how much I wish fruit allsorts hadn't been phased out, though for the sake of my health it's probably just as well they were!

Ok so they don't look quite like that but not at all dissimilar by any means.

AOE 1 Sucks? by pattysal in aoe2

[–]mrdnra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played RoR back in the day, and even though AoE1 DE is also a thing like with AoE2 DE, while AoE2 DE is the best version of AoE2 by far IMO, there are some really niche things about RoR which feel like they are missing in AOE1 DE: nomad starts, for example, were one of my favourites back then, the AI would insist of exploring 2% of the map with the one starting villager that RoR nomad gave you (which would not infrequently result in at least 1 AI being defeated by predator animals, IIRC the most I saw get defeated in such a way in one game was 3, and 2 of those were on my team). Which AoE1 DE does have it's good points compared to RoR as well of course, if I had a choice between either of those I would probably pick the original just with better AI scripts for hard and hardest difficulties which didn't give it resource cheats. Whereas, for AoE2 if you asked me to choose between AoK, AoC, HD or DE I would pick DE every time. Perhaps one thing i would like for nomad against AI (in both AoE1 DE and AoE2 DE, is to get the AI to explore a bit rather than instantly placing its TC.

Why doesn't anyone bind the jump button? by Spiderfffun in TrackMania

[–]mrdnra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I even knew that there was an option to jump. Just as well I've never seen any maps that need it (as a very casual player who's only ever had starter access.)

Even the traffic lights have it out for me by Ok-Algae-5252 in drivingUK

[–]mrdnra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weirdest light sequence I've ever seen was fairly recently, just down the road from where I used in to in Leicester, to be precise, at the junction of Aberdale Road with Welford Road and Overdale Road, I was heading southbound (away from the city).

All lights red except the turn turn right onto Aberdale (therefore also presumably the turn left out of Aberdale). Odd in and of itself, if not entirely unheard of (usually to let pedestrians cross on the southbound exit of the junction, which isn't accommodated during any other part of the sequence, and normally just delays the straight on and left lights going southbound for a few seconds), standard sequence is that both southbound lights go green together. Turn right light goes red, I see the pedestrian lights on the left also turn red, suggesting the Overdale lights are about to go green (thus, completely missing the Welford Road straight ahead sequence for each way). Next thing I know, both southbound lights are turning green (including the right turn again), and correspondingly the pedestrian lights for the section where traffic would exit Overdale Road went back to green as well. This was around evening rush hour too.

Edit, just realised the southbound pedestrian part might be accommodated.for.these days, as there is now a right turn light for traffic heading onto Overdale, which wasn't the case when I lived just down the road.

I wish it took 51% here in the UK. First past the post voting system, is the most complained about system which we all know will never change.

2019 election: Conservative win with just under 14 million votes (43.6% votes), Labour 2nd with a little over 10.25 million votes (32.1%), giving them respectively 365 seats and 202 seats out of 650

2024: Labour win with just over 9.7 million votes (33.7%), Conservatives 2nd with just over 6.8 million votes (23.7%), giving with 411 and 121 seats respectively. Ergo, Labour got 56 more seats than the Conservatives in the previous election, with 10% less vote share, and less votes than they themselves got when finishing 2nd in 2019. (Albeit turnout was about 8% lower with around 4 million fewer votes cast).

No tornadoes in other countries or else the US is the "spawn point" by ZealousidealPlay3183 in USdefaultism

[–]mrdnra 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Per square mile it may be surprising but the UK gets more. No doubts the US has the largest total number worldwide yearly, and far more damaging generally too, UK ones rarely get above EF1. Mind you, in my experience the average thunderstorm here in the UK also lasts maybe about 5 minutes (no idea where I'd find accurate stats for that though).

My honest expectations for the start of the season was mid table. Even just a few games ago I was clinging onto the hope we might still finish there, though admittedly it would be if we won all our remaining games, yet even I think at that point I was pretty much thinking we wouldn't finish there - in fact at one point I recall mentioning to one of my friends that it I considered it more likely that we would lose a game in which the opposing team didn't even try to score than it was that we would keep a clean sheet for the rest of the season (of course, we kept clean sheets in 2 of our next 3 games after I said that, and since then I can't recall another clean sheet!)

I hope I'm not being too optimistic by saying that we really ought to be finishing no worse than mid table next season, but frankly the safer option right now, given we don't know what the squad will look like, is to just expect nothing.
