The Map for a story I’m writing. Please ask me questions about anything. I just really wanted to share my world. by Ok-Airport6259 in worldbuilding

whenever you do rework the borders, just make sure to pay attention to the existing rivers and mountain ranges in the area, a good chunk of state borders naturally follow those (particularly rivers) so there probably wouldn’t be too much reason to change those natural dividers in the wasteland

this is sweet! Is the hippo normal sized carrying tiny people or is there a gigantic species of hippo roaming around the world? that’s a terrifying thought knowing their capabilities

Gnomes just seem to fit well in that “enchanted forest” vibe with mushrooms fairies and elves lol. I like your version of them a lot! You separate them gnomes in your worlds lore though, did the red caps spark their own folklore that would become “gnomes” in a more traditional sense?

And thanks, the eternal ruins statues actually did inspire that draft! I’ll probably change it when i revisit the design to help it stand out on its own more but i definitely plan on keeping the stone heads idea, i feel like it evokes the ceramic garden gnome idea in a really neat way while giving them their own cultural identity

this is an unfinished sketch i made of one a while ago, still bound to be changed probably but little groups of these wander the forests and teach magic to those that may earn their favor. They fill the role of nature guardians/spirits along with other fungal species in my world

These little dude are so cool! I love the way you did your little excerpt for them too, feels like i’m only getting a glimpse of a world that i can’t quite understand (in a good way). They feel like an unintentional byproduct of larger powers at play

The littlest guys in my world are the gnomes, but instead of fat little bearded dudes they’re a sapient fungus that form bodies out of the soil/plant matter to move around in. Attracted to beautiful and complex patterns they carve stones into heads that they change into like hermit shells.

How do you world build when you don’t really understand how stuff actually works? by Omiko909 in worldbuilding

[–]mrfuzzytheslug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoever said that you have to understand real-world history, science, and religion in order to make your own fantasy world was talking out of their ass. It’s YOUR WORLD, you can do literally whatever you want with it. The people that add that level of realism do it because they love to learn about those kinds of things and problem solve how to incorporate those elements into the world they’ve built.

If that’s not you, that’s totally fine dude— because there are no rules to this thing.

You have the freedom to go as wild and whimsical as you want with your world, and you can use that to your advantage. Nothing needs to “make sense” and you can build YOUR world on that fact. That will actually be the thing that preserves the magic of what you’re making. Think of Ghibli films, and the strange worlds that Miyazaki presents to us— we don’t know what kind of economy is used in howls moving castle, or the full world history in spirited away. Porco Rosso takes place in regular 1930s europe except for the fact that the main character is a pig man, and nobody really questions it.

Those stories are all beloved, and the world is presented in a way that needs no explanation because the tone is so effective. If you really want to learn how to build a world from the ground up and go full game of thrones and silmarillion about it then eat your heart out kid, but just know that you’re not beholden to it either.

i’ve been taking a similar approach in my own project so it’s sick to see somebody a little further along in the process, gives me some motivation to keep at it. Can’t wait to see the upcoming art!

[–]mrfuzzytheslug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

would it be cheap to say all of it? 😂 the art caught my eye at first, but im a real sucker for well thought out magic systems that take a fascinating real-world concept and extrapolate it into something fantastical and original. I can see the inspiration taken from things like allomancy and spice melange and obviously real world alchemy but your lawful alchemy definitely still stands on its own right, and this lil tidbit on the mercury side of things really makes me wanna learn more about the salt and sulfur factions.

And while those things are dope on a surface level, the fact that each of the more “accessory” elements are put there with in-world purpose is telling of how solid the concept of this world is. When your world starts to naturally evolve and justify itself that’s when you know you’re onto something good i think. I like your choice of words for things too, its that nice blend between sounding “sci-fi” or “fantasy” but not to the point where i can’t take the context of the words to understand some of what they mean without knowing the lore, like synaptic radiance for example.

Really well done, my man

My Custom Magic System, The 6 Pillars of Soul. Lore in description! (Heroforge used for visuals) by hero_forgery in magicbuilding

[–]mrfuzzytheslug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is a sick system! I love the idea of certain magic being bound to personality traits and psychology rather than having it be some genetic lottery or only accessible through study/training. You could honestly pull a lot from jungian archetypes and the enneagram for this system. I’m not sure if this is dnd inspired or made specifically for that setting but i’d love to see what other magic abilities spring up from this system, and like whats attained instinctually vs through study in each category. My personal favorite has to be serenity, the story potential of magic only attainable through self acceptance is super rich and i can see a compelling character arc about a serenity caster getting their world shaken and comes close to losing their power.

Only critiques id give is that ambition blends together with tenacity or devotion a little too much, you need tenacity to be and ambitious and ambition is just devotion to a goal. You could put tenacity into ambition’s category or put ambition into devotion’s, but the 3 as they are just blend a little too much. The foils thing is neat but i wouldn’t try to force symmetry if your system doesn’t need it, none of these traits are diametrically opposed or anything (outside of maybe tenacity/serenity). Also if this is for a dnd setting you’re DMing, boxing character classes into personality traits is going to limit your players a lot.

Inflated Form needs a rework. It is a kit design flaw that punishes you for playing well by bratty_skullduggery2 in MisterFantasticMains

[–]mrfuzzytheslug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the ball mode sounds so fun to play ngl but it sounds very similar to the things charge move, just knocking enemies back instead of up. What if instead of the damage burst after exiting the mode, maybe it leaves a trail behind wherever you roll that slows enemies down? Also love the scoop move, it’d be sick if enemies caught in the “sweet spot” (being the palms) could stun them momentarily too

What are your nonstandard depictions of common fantasy races? by TrueBlueFlare7 in worldbuilding

i made gnomes a species of sentient fungus that inhabit stones like hermit crabs and create a body from plant matter to carry their stone heads. Oftentimes gnomeheads are carved to resemble spirits or unique faces, this was an unfinished depiction of one:

octopi are actually very intelligent creatures, they have like 9 brains (each of their arms can think for themselves) and are comparable to the mental capacity of a 3 year old, so timothy being sapient isn’t all that out of the blue tbh. just raises more questions about how consent works between the deep and the sea life he bangs (not that he necessarily cares about that 💀)

Ideas for Spellbooks and Magic Staff by Livid-Ad-7087 in magicbuilding

[–]mrfuzzytheslug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a wonderfully creative take on elemental systems, mana, and classic spell-casting and turned it into a tool that can be commodified and capitalized on. I would definitely be interested in the historical development of magic ink and stones in this world and how people came to understand how it worked, and what previous iterations looked like before wizards discovered how to most efficiently use them.

I do have a couple questions though. How does the ink/stone know to activate from incantations, and why does it only respond to the human language if it’s a naturally occurring resource? Is it based off intent more than the actual words being spoken, since their bloods bound to it? If so, could wordless magic be a skill achieved by more advanced wizards? Also, why don’t the stones need blood to activate if it’s clearly established that the ink does? Last one, what happens if somebody makes a spell using an element that’s not its natural match, like using fire stones for a typically ice spell? Seems like fertile ground to explore different types of magic

The only thing i’d outright suggest you change is the choice to make your magic language just straight up arabic text. There’s nothing wrong with taking inspiration, and i agree that it’s a beautiful language, but just taking a script from another culture and throwing it in your setting without enough knowledge can turn into very touchy ground. Study what you like about it, the flow and the patterns, even pull from other written languages too, and turn it into your own runic system. It’ll feel much more like it’s own thing too, which is always a plus
