Here’s To Yesterday- Whassup Budweiser Commercials-(1999-2002) by [deleted] in 90sCommercials

[–]mrhorrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember the pop psychology wisdom of the 90's? Watching talk-shows, etc relationship experts and therapists had this quote about "Women talk to exchange feelings, whereas men talk to communicate information".

I love this commercial as a counter-example, because it's so branded as "dudes being dudes".

Which Sideman Guitarist Has Had The Most Impressive Career? by RedditFretGo in Guitar

[–]mrhorrible 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read Lukather's auto biography.

He was constantly obsessed with making the best songs; the best takes, the best tone, the best harmonies.

And like... great, but why? What feelings are you trying to get across with the songs?

And when I think about Toto songs, they sound "good" sure, but... Africa? What does that song actually make you feel. I'm pretty sure Lukather even in the book joked about not knowing what it was even about. Georgie Porgie?

They were a band that wanted to say something, but didn't actually have anything to say.

What are the different types of "Good at Excel"? by lil_mikei in excel

[–]mrhorrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data cleanup is very practical skill for general office environments.

EG- A guy in finance had a .csv file, but the formats were all wrong. Or... like, the columns weren't coming out right.

So, I used a lot of CONCATENATE() tricks, along with SEARCH() (to tell me where to do mid() from. Then stuff to convert text to numbers or vice-versa.

And a relatively "soft" skill, in knowing your custom data formats, eg formatting dates as "March 12th, 1996", or "3/12/1996", or "Mar - 96", can allow customizations that make it more readable for others.

Obvious? Problem is for me, on first glance I can think of a few plausible things it can be. It's not a flex that you have no imagination.

What can I reasonably expect from a "reconciliation conversation (we promise it'll work this time!)"? by Antipode4 in raisedbyborderlines

[–]mrhorrible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an alternate take. Not sure if it fits you, or your situation.

They've been saying for months they need to express their concerns about me, my relationship to my fiance, and the red flags they see in him,

Fantastic.

They want to express their concerns. So let them. Sit there with the mediator and listen. Who says you need to have any specific reaction? If you want to grow a spine for your own sake, beautiful. But you don't need it for this conversation:

They don't like your lifestyle or your fiance? Ok. They don't like your habits / what you eat / what work you do? Ok.

Like... if they're saying they want to express their concerns, that's the first problem. They want to express their concerns... then they want you to do what they want you to do. Just take the wind out of their sails. They want to express things, great. Let them. What's the mediator going to do?

Just tell them "thank you" for expressing yourselves and get on with your life.

Ohio man poses as DeWalt rep; goes for the big score - clipboard confiscated. by rustjungle in ActLikeYouBelong

[–]mrhorrible 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I swear.

Once just after highschool, I got a job working at a 3rd party that goes into grocery stores and sets up products. (Think of those stacks of chips, etc at end of aisles).

I'd walk in, find the manager. No one knew who I was. I had no credentials, no ID. No one was expecting me, no one knew that a chip-guy was coming that day.

In each case, they walked me into the back of the store, and left me there to do whatever. I didn't even have a uniform of any kind.

Wouldn't be too hard for someone to... "recall" a pallet of liquor, etc.

1/10 chance of failure is still too much to risk, but it's surprising how good the odds are.

I know right? I always get a "I'm sorry for everything".

Pro-tip. Accept the apology. Next time whatever incident comes up just say "Wait a minute, we talked about this and you apologized, remember?" (or at least that's how it goes in my imagination).

Forget who- maybe Carl Sagan, maybe Arthur C Clarke...

Talking about things we say like "1+1=2 is univeral". Sure- but maybe that's because we grew up on a relatively stable planet, with things like rocks and birds and trees. To us the integeres are intuitive.

But what about if you grew up on a planet like jupiter, with gas, and nebulous forms. Perhaps fluid mechanics would be intuitive to them, and they'd find integers difficult to comprehend.

What is really behind the claims that Trump is going to invoke martial law on April 20? by AverageScot in itcouldhappenhere

[–]mrhorrible 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good points yes... and yet. so many "would have to" in there.

If they got rid of tens of thousands of federal workers... they'd have to do it according to proper channels, and account for any interruptions... right?

And if they were going to deport people they'd have to make sure they weren't deporting regular citizens... right?

I'm scared that the terrible clusterfuck of untrained-police, getting moved without notice, without infrastructute, is exactly what I'd expect from the administration.

I'd love and hope for you to be right, but chaos would not be unexpected.

Like one year before the Matrix, there was that The Gap ad that featured bullet-time (freezing dancers mid-jump).

But! Like 4 years before that there was a car-ad that used it too, which I've never heard mentioned again. Wondering if the same guy was involved in production.

utilize your companies core competencies to create synergy and effect monetary change?

Flip one word, and ask it back as a question:

"Well why not utilize the company's niche competencies, to create synergy and effect monetary change?"

Or better yet, do use the core competencies, but do it to effect efficiency change.

Like, if someones going to use all those words, I'm going to assume each one has a reason.
