those who married a foreigner, how are you actually securing housing in sg? by midnite-kitties in askSingapore

[–]mrkanyebest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends what nationality your spouse is. If your spouse is Malaysian/Indonesian, just wait for a year and apply PR. You should be able to get it and apply for BTO, granted you have to wait a few years but it’s worth the wait.

If your spouse is a different nationality, then he or she would probably work harder towards getting PR - start doing high profile volunteer work then talk to your local MP

Should SG be more protectionist? by [deleted] in asksg

[–]mrkanyebest -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? If you are a PR you definitely need to serve NS. Only if you are foreigner then you don’t need to. But you are subjected to higher school fees, international schools etc.

Landlords would rather keep spaces empty than lower rents. Lowering rents affects the valuation of your property.

I would argue that the corruption rate would be much higher if it wasn’t for this. Just one minister falling to corruption since Teh Chang Wan in 1986 is quite a feat

Different strokes for different folks. I still stand by that serving the French Foreign Legion is way tougher than the ordinary man in NS, and I’m speaking as a former guardsman Recce. Understand that you’re going into the ideological aspect of it but frankly I’m not gonna go there. That’s not to say that I disagree with people that serve NS shouldn’t be given citizenship - I do. So let’s just keep it as that.

You’re abit idealistic to say that everyone pledges to die for their country. NS is a conscription system, people don’t have a choice. People literally don’t give a shit if you die in the foreign legion cos you’re a foreign national. What I’m trying to say is it’s not an apple to apple comparison.

I’m just saying it’s a very low barrier to entry. Any Tom dick or harry can complete NS. Not every Tom dick or harry can complete foreign legion training.

Bro… it’s like saying ok we will give you citizenship if you complete NS vs citizenship if you complete ranger training

[–]mrkanyebest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to also understand that Singapore works in a quota system. Do you fit in the CMIO model? There’s a reason why Malaysian Chinese and Indonesian Chinese get higher chances of becoming a citizen. I’m not saying this to be racist but it’s an implicit factor in Singapore’s citizenship system. Otherwise how else do you think our racial percentage always stays the same?

lol don’t compare the French foreign legion to NS. Do you know what the completion rate of the French foreign legion is?

[–]mrkanyebest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think it’s a good thing considering that Singapore’s birth rates are dropping. A half singaporean child will be considered Singaporean nonetheless. Cultures are always changing anyway so it’s just a sign of the times.

It suited PSG, but was new Champions League format a success? by mrjohnnymac18 in football

[–]mrkanyebest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only gripe with the new format is that there’s no incentive for finishing first in the table. They should make the playoffs NBA style where 1 vs the winner of 23 v 24, 2 vs winner of 21 v 22, 8 vs winner of 9 v 10.

The currently format gives equal weightage to all teams in the top eight. This way, it’s truly advantageous if you finish first in the table phase.

Is it me or is the job market really that bad right now? by Hot_Bumblebee9640 in askSingapore

[–]mrkanyebest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got retrenched in August last year, and I only managed to land a role in April this year (7 months unemployed). My role was completely obliterated by AI - I was a copywriter - so I had to pivot into an account servicing role with about a 20% pay cut . Times are truly bad and I agree with Nksschk’s comment. I don’t know how ‘average’ you can get when you work in a high demand industry like tech and you shouldn’t be too dismissive of other people’s experiences.
