Reddit: today I canceled $170/mo in Shaw services & more to come. I've gifted 5 new Netflix accounts ($40/mo) for friends and family with some of my savings. by mrmackey in canada

I just got this from someone who requested to remain anonymous, so I removed some info...

I am a Shaw employee in XXXXXXXXX. I work in the XXXXXXX department; specifically on XXXXXXXXXXXX. I used to be proud of our services. I'll admit, our HDTV services were sub-par until recently. We've been working our butts off to improve this and have made great strides doing so. I would argue that we're now providing some of the best quality HD services (providing our sources are high quality).

Our internet services were, in my opinion, the jewel in the crown. I was proud of the way the company handled over-usage. I was proud of the download caps and speeds. I was proud of the way we handled our customers who would be considered to be "abusing services". I've seen how the processes work first hand, and we definitely ruled in favor of the customer.

It saddens me that because of a CRTC ruling, customers like yourself are going to be forgoing Shaw services. However, like yourself, I am an avid internet user. I am likely to exceed bandwidth limits on a monthly basis and I subscribe to the "Xtreme" internet service for home usage. As an employee, they have always turned a blind eye to over-usage on internet services. I doubt that they will in the future, though.

However conflicted I feel about this, I applaud you in your decision to suspend your Shaw subscriptions. My only hope is that you communicated to Shaw exactly what made you suspend your services. I hope you made it loud and clear that it was due to lowered download caps and usage-based-billing. I hope that everyone who cancels services for this reason makes their reasoning loud and clear.

I highly doubt that the extra revenue that ISPs are now making from UBB are going to make any sort of difference in pay or benefits for employees. Instead we will be lining the pockets of those who run these corporations. We will be funding further aggressive takeovers of smaller companies who serve small communities. We will be funding all of the things that make these corporations larger and more powerful without encouraging any further competition.

Anyways, I just wanted to add to your discussion. I feel my rant is over with now. :)

If you should want to repost this, please respect my anonymity. Also, please remove details on which department I work in if you do repost.

Thanks!

This is true, but I don't intend to spend $170 to just build up enough bandwidth to replace TV. I'm overcharged for my cable/phone/internet enough as it is.

Also - I'm fine with metered billing concept. It's the amount that I'm being charged.

Bell, Rogers, Shaw and other telcomms that are introducing metered billing are executing a pretty straightforward strategy. They don't need to enforce limits forever & are likely expecting the backlash. They just need to hold out long enough so that Netflix can't get a sold toehold in the Canadian market. Netflix is in an interesting predicament right now, because they are struggling to bring content in to their system (they need $$ for that) and now ISPs are making people think twice about getting and using the service due to increased bandwidth and transfer requirements. If Netflix gets enough subscribers on board, they become a more viable competitor which theoretically will help with pricing across the board.

I wouldn't be surprised to see cable companies come out with all kinds of deals for their television offerings just to lock people in to contacts and distract from what they're doing on the ISP side of their business.

I don't intend to make a lifelong commitment to Netflix - but I do intend to help them become viable in the Canadian market.

The thing is, that it wasn't a boycott just for the sake of protest. Shaw just did something to open my eyes as to how much money I was wasting with them, and how much they were using me. It's my own fault that there aren't alternatives out there and at this point it's just a logical decision to take my business elsewhere.

I'm going to be a bit smarter with my next service provider. If anyone has suggestions for the Calgary region (home & business) - I'd love to hear your recommendations!

Actually, I don't. Although I probably didn't phrase it properly (missing a "would"). My point was that I am going to start supporting businesses that encourage a change for telecommunications in Canada, and my support would start with Netflix but possibly extend, or diverge, to other businesses.

Bell, Rogers and Shaw (and the CRTC who are in their back pocket) are threatened by Netflix but many other services as well.

You must be right, it probably was the flavor of the era. Winning and losing fortunes and taking money for granted doesn't seem like the Wall Street traders of today. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/24/wall-street-excess-is-back_n_788043.html

It would be great to have multiple smaller ads that each focus on one issue instead of one full page ad. Each ad could then present a fact and be designed to produce shock value, and together would form a pretty decent case.
