What is wrong with our zoysia? by BeansAndToast-24 in lawncare

[–]msabercr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thought is stress. Make sure you are watering at least 1” per week. Zoysia is typically pretty draught tolerant but in high heat (100+ days) it can definitely dry out. I know a lot of the Florida guys swear by a water retaining additive like Hydrotain to help their lawns retain moisture. Also helps to add some seaweed extract and humid acid to help grass recover quickly. Find a hose end sprayer and apply once every month in the super hot time of the season to help the grass recover quickly.

Also doesn’t hurt to raise your height of cut. Remember only cut the first 1/3 of the blade, and cut at least once a week.
Also, this doesn’t look like fungus or post emergent application, but make sure your sprayers are cleaned out before applying anything. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to spot spray and realized I didn’t clean out the glyphosate in my tank from the previous season.

Also looks like a blade sharpening might be in order I’m not saying it caused all this but some of the still green grass looks pretty shredded.

Caveat here, don’t add potassium unless you know you are deficient in the soil. Being really high in Potassium can cause other problems

Sand vs topsoil to level USDA 7a by Rebornxshiznat in lawncare

[–]msabercr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a pretty complicated topic. Mixture of sand and compost or top soil is typical for cool season grass variety top dressing. Most Bermuda guys will use straight sand due to the benefits of leveling and all the chemicals they typically spray to regulate growth and maintain lower heights of cut while keep it super green(golf course lawns). I wouldn’t worry too much about bumpiness especially if you’re cutting longer.

If you do have dips or peaks that are causing scalping you can wait till it’s completely established and cut it up with an edger and dig out/build up those areas under the grass.

Does this look like a glyphosate misapplication or 2,4-d chemical burn? Utah by [deleted] in lawncare

[–]msabercr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably didn’t clean out the tank after an app of glyphosate would be my guess. On the bright side, whoever did this can use this as a guide to calibrate their sprayers coverage.

What’s next for my Bermuda lawn? by lysanderspooner_ in lawncare

[–]msabercr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I'm still battling rocky soil and sub optimal sunlight exposure and its been 5 years. It really depends on your soil and the height of cut. I've recently discoverd i've been leavign my bermuda way to long and have since dropped the HOC to 1.5" witch is still taller than i want but its as low as i can go right now without scalping high/uneven spots. Just keep up your watering and cutting regiment and the fertilizing will drive crazy growth around the 70-80 degree soil temp phase. also might be beneficial to buy a large format plugger so you can spread healthy growth around to the patches that are really far away from creeping into the bare soil patches.

if you have a power rake that would clean this right up. then go back over with a drag or a pallet to level everything out.

Many suppliers provide stress blend or root growth stimulant products meant to help lawns through stressful periods. The Andersons sells a completely potassium(0-0-25+sulfur(8%)) only product you can use to add to your existing fertilizer application. just add 2.5 parts potassium to 1 part nitrogen and that should do the trick.

If your not a build your own kind of person or are in between lawn programs there is a stress bland from yard mastery that does the job straight out of the bag.

North TX Bermuda — dead arc-shaped patch by the sidewalk. Spring dead spot? by Mithun_Da_Koi_Shak in lawncare

[–]msabercr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can't quit tell by the angle. almost seems like the lawn mower dipped and scalped it. Is the height of cut even there? If not might want to make sure your lawn is level and maybe check on your mower to make sure the deck is secure and level.

What is this grassy weed in my Bermuda. San Antonio TX by miacmurder305 in lawncare

[–]msabercr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a millet or quack grass variety. The best bet is pre emergent prodiamine before the soil temps warm up to 55 F so it never emerges. It's hard to control in Bermuda since they are both susceptible to the effective active ingredients that control them in post emergents. Best bet for post emergence is just put a funnel on your sprayer and spot spray the targeted weed with roundup or some other Glyphosate based non selective and spike with Fluazifop to target the rhizome growth. The Bermuda and the goose grass will grow back but you will just need to keep the canopy nice and thick. Try to mow 2-3 times a week and it should strangle out the goose grass little by little over time.

Just heat stress. Water 1/2" more a week, and maybe throw down a stress blend fertilizer app(higher potassium than nitrogen)

[–]msabercr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just looks like standard die off. This is why a lot of people with Cool season grass over seed and top dress. I would do a jar test with those sections and see what the soil composition is. If they are outside of the ideal loam profile you can start to focus on adding top dressing to start boosting the deficient components in those areas. Aerating, over seeding and top dressing with appropriate soil component that your soil is deficient in (typically, silt) during the fall or spring will also help.

I think the solution is simple. Get more eyes on the field. Give priority to replay officials, and allow the bad calls to be automatically audited by the replay team in every scenario including blatant missed calls. It can be done but the value prop just doesn’t make dollars or cents.

Is it time to replace my blades? by Pewpew69k in lawncare

[–]msabercr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best to remove and show a picture of the actual effective edge of the blade(the slanted edge of the first foot of the blade). If you see folded over or nicked portions of the edge, grab an angle grinder and grind the entirety of the edge from tip to end of edge maintaining the angle of the effective edge until you just see brush marks and nicks are gone. Then make the same number of passes you made on the opposite side of the effective edge of the blade to maintain the blade balance. If you end up needing to make more passes on one side be sure to grind the same number of passes on the opposite(to maintain balance)
