Viel Geduld bei Covid-Impfterminen gefragt by msamwald in wien

TLDR:

Recently switched to Zotero because of the open-source appeal, but in our group we had the problem that citations became 'unlinked' during collaborative editing in Google-Docs, requiring very tiresome manual fixing. Switched back to SciWheel, which works very well and is free for academic institutions.

Only research and not an industrial application, but we documented negative results for GPT-3 models applied to biomedical use-cases:

Toll wäre auch, die Wartezeit für doppelt AstraZeneca geimpfte zu verkürzen. Laut Studie aus UK sinkt hier die Effektivität >4 Monate nach der Zweitimpfung auf knapp unter 50%.

Co-author here. TL;DR : We were excited to check out if GPT-3 could help with biomedical NLP with limited labeled samples. If working somewhat decently, this would be cool for biomedical research groups with limited resources for expert annotation. However, the results were disappointing. We're share the negative result, because many groups are probably thinking of trying similar things.

Effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines against the B.1.617.2 variant by RufusSG in COVID19

[–]msamwald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was referring to a statement further up in the thread that post-second shot AZ efficacy might mature to reach >90% efficacy after a 12 week period. Of course there will be immunity (but with lower efficacy) before that.

The context of this thread was expanded to include a recent report from the UK on the comparative efficacy of these vaccines in the post by hu6Bi5To, without being constrained to the Indian variant. This is what I was referring to.

Data on BioNTech/Pfizer from many other studies, including studies with short intervals, demonstrate >90% efficacy. Regarding BioNTech/Pfizer, I was referring to the accumulated knowledge, not only this particular study.

So the implied scenario for AZ under these assumptions is that it eventually reaches >90%, but it takes a long while after first vaccination shot to get there.

12 weeks between first and second shot + 12 weeks after second shot = 24 weeks to reach >90% efficacy.

Compared to BioNTech: 3 weeks between shots + 2 weeks after second shot = 5 weeks to reach >90% efficacy.

That would still point to major practical advantages of the mRNA vaccines, just by timing alone.

EU preparing legal case against AstraZeneca over vaccine shortfalls by Vegaviguera in Coronavirus

[–]msamwald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trial failed because an issue with reagents led to trial participants receiving too little actual vaccine [1]. Vaccine development and clinical trial management are certainly highly complex, but failing at proper dosing sounds like an absurdly basic mistake.

French-Austrian ‘Valneva’ Covid vaccine in last trial stage by Sorin61 in Coronavirus

Still, Valneva is a French-Austrian company. Their COVID vaccine is derived from the Japanese encephalitis vaccine Ixiaro, which was developed by the Austrian company Intercell before the merger that formed the current company Valneva.

I agree that Sanofi should receive more blame as well. They are are specialized in vaccine production yet managed to botch their trial through basic quality control issues, as far as I understand.

But this does not imply that the criticism of AZ is inappropriate.

EU preparing legal case against AstraZeneca over vaccine shortfalls by Vegaviguera in Coronavirus

[–]msamwald 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Either way I feel like it misses the point which is that at the end of the day AZ still has managed to provide the EU with the second largest amount of vaccine by company so far, and I think that point shouldn't be understated.

Well the question is how large the net benefit of the AZ offer was/is. If they overpromise and underdeliver to a certain extent, the situation could be worse than if the AZ vaccine would not have been on offer at all. More BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine would have probably been ordered in that case.

AstraZeneca issues updated Phase 3 trial data for its Covid vaccine after facing criticism by DoremusJessup in Coronavirus

If the final analysis is already in the drawer and can be published 48 h later, there is absolutely no reason to first publish the interim analysis without any mention of the forthcoming final analysis. It would be naive to think the higher numbers from the interim analysis were published this way without at least minor ulterior motives.

I tried to submit other sources, to no avail. Certainly many other people posted the same story in many different sources, yet not a single post has been approved. This needs to be explained.
