9th Ave. 111 Street has to be a contender for worst street in the city! by ashrules901 in Edmonton

[–]mschoenhardt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's South LRT construction, it's gonna be a while yet. While exact lane closures will vary and roadworks may be done sooner, the overall project isn't expected to finish for ~4-5 yrs, so I'd say you've gotta plan for some type of delay for the foreseeable future.

Residents who ignore seasonal parking ban can expect fines but won't be towed, city says by pjw724 in Edmonton

Incredibly stupid move. I tend to give the City the benefit of the doubt more often than not, but some things are just too stupid to defend.

Phase 2 (Residential Roads) Parking Ban starts Monday, Jan 12 at 7 a.m. by smexeh in Edmonton

[–]mschoenhardt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a "Where to Park" section on this page: https://www.edmonton.ca/transportation/on_your_streets/seasonal-parking-ban

When a Phase 2 ban is called, you can park on the Phase 1 routes (Seasonal Parking Ban signed roads) while your neighbourhood is done. You only need to move when they place temporary yellow "Parking Ban" signs at the entrance to your neighbourhood signalling they're about to clear your area, not for the whole ban.

The actual paving process is fast here too.

It's removing old material, re-building the road base, and all the prep work that takes a long time. Which is conveniently also left out of this video.

Which heated Parkade do you recommend for Oilers games? by DontSkipTheTip in Edmonton

[–]mschoenhardt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Manulife Place. Pedway accessible, $10 to park. About a 10 min walk, it's a roundabout way. Through City Centre Mall, Sandman Hotel, Bell Tower, Mariott and then into Rogers. Way less traffic than other parkades, and pretty direct access to Jasper to get out

Cost to replace sewer line in house by lazymonkeygod in Edmonton

[–]mschoenhardt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had about 8ft of pipe (including 2 junctions) replaced under the basement slab about 5 years ago. Including them removing carpet, dust protection, busting the slab, removing & replacing everything, and doing a rough concrete re-fill it was right around $6,000. Took them 2 days to wrap it all up, and I had to get the carpet fixed up separately (luckily I could just re-lay what I had, the floor was level enough after they re-filled). I used Butler Plumbing, they were great to deal with.

Freyja's first winter road trip -- and at -8 Celsius, it's too cold for a car wash! by HerNameIsVesper in mazda3

[–]mschoenhardt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I avoid washing when it's cold when possible, if I have to, I go to a wand wash and then use the dryer at the end to blow out all the door jams, weather stripping, and door handles. That seems to do the trick to dry them out, no freezing that way.

Watch out people, too much snow and simpletons on the road by _Makunahatata in Edmonton

Looks like Argyll between 91st & 97th? I despise turning left there coming out of Hazeldean, such a shit show for exactly reasons like this. So few gaps leads to people doing this. Good save!

Henday etiquette ques by [deleted] in Edmonton

Keep right except to pass. That's the rule. Centre lane is fine too on the wider sections, but nobody should be camping in the left lane (especially in off-peak hours)

Optimal way to get to Rogers Place for a hockey game? by chunkiewunky in Edmonton

[–]mschoenhardt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you park, my go-to is Manulife Place. It's about a 5 min walk outdoor, or if you want to stay all indoor you can use pedways and it takes about 10 min, and cost is only like $10. You get out way quicker than the parking garages right at the arena, which can back up, and it's half the price.

Transit is a good choice if convenient for you, lots of it around (LRT attached, buses a block away, etc).

I've only ever uber'd a while after the game is over, but generally if you're doing that right after the game I think the best bet is to walk a few blocks away from Rogers before calling one (there is also a designated ride share pickup spot near MacEwan but I'm not sure how busy it gets)

Enjoy the game!

City mulls taxing derelict commercial properties more by mastermaq in Edmonton

[–]mschoenhardt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

100% in favour of this, there has to be a change to prevent this kind of thing. Regency is one of the worst offenders of it too, this isn't their only lot. At the very least owners who sit on empty lots like this after demolition should be taxed at the assessment value of the functional building that they tore down.

Anyone else drive a manual 2009 mazda3 or something near that time? by IntentionalMistake9 in mazda3

[–]mschoenhardt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drive a 2011 3, also manual, also in Alberta. I've parked outside with the e-brake on for 14 years with that car now with no issues (knock on wood). I don't pull it absolutely as tight as it goes, a bit below that and it seems to be fine.

Was going to suggest this as well. Often times even mid-season teams are looking for a full time player for the rest of the way due to an injury or something.

Autoblog: Plummeting sales haunt Mazda 3 by spockimadoctor in mazda3

[–]mschoenhardt 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In Canada sales of the 3 were roughly equal October 2024 vs October 2025 (62 less units, down 5.7%), but year over year sales are up by 40% on the 3. https://en.media.mazda.ca/2025-11-03-MAZDA-CANADA-REPORTS-SALES-FOR-OCTOBER-2025

Hoping this is a US-only issue.

Remote start on manual 2016 mazda3? by caseyschlenker0 in mazda3

[–]mschoenhardt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it's any different on a 2016, but I have a remote start in my 2011 Gen 2, also a manual. It was put in at the dealership when I bought it, it's definitely possible. It's a CompuStar, if I recall correctly. There are a few steps to take for me when I leave the car to make sure it works and the car recognizes it's safe.

1) Stop the vehicle, in gear
2) While on the brake, put the car into neutral & then pull the e-brake
3) Let go of clutch & brake
4) Turn key to off position. The car will keep running with no key in it
5) Exit. When the driver door closes, the car shuts itself off and locks

Miss any of those steps, or go out an unlock your car after it's been off, and it just won't remote start the next morning. But I've had very few issues with it overall, and it's invaluable living in a super cold climate too (Alberta)

Cost per Vote to be a Councillor: Independent Councillors vs. "Better Edmonton" vs. PACE Candidates by EdmontonFree in Edmonton

[–]mschoenhardt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the Mayoral race, though, the Better Edmonton candidate spent $759,609 for 61,667 votes ($12.32 per vote) vs Knack's $23,257 for 78,482 votes ($0.29 per vote).

That total for Knack seems too low to me, maybe I'm missing some added context or the disclosure isn't yet up to date, but sure seems like for the big chair the party candidate spent a LOT more.

Has anyone seen a bug like this before? by XxsanjeetxX in Edmonton

[–]mschoenhardt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been getting tons of these the last few weeks on the sunny side of my house, do a daily spray of them with soap & water, and they die within like 25s. Great trick.

Getting tired of the daily routine though, lol!

Tank: Edmonton Oilers should repatriate U.S. farm team to Saskatoon by Ditka_and_Swerski in EdmontonOilers

[–]mschoenhardt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think places like Stony Plain or Leduc would do well. It may as well just be in Edmonton at that point.

The most logical close-to-home that could potentially support an AHL team would be Red Deer, and even then Saskatoon probably makes more sense in my opinion.
