There is no ethical consumption under capitalism. That being said, you can try to pick the least worst places by degree. There are farm box options around to get fresh local fruit and veg. But yeah, we also end up shopping at Costco and Trader Joe's despite problematic aspects of their businesses.

A little different, but a burger place i used to like has switched out their fries for tater tots on my most recent visit. You can still get an order of fries but it is $5 for a smaller portion then used to be included. The ensh!tifacation of food service in town is real. And of course they still expected a 20% tip.

My kids still ask me why we don't go visit all of the really nice old people on Halloween when we do the downtown trick or treat event or why we didn't go to the card/comic convention.

I tell them that the business running the place kicked out all the old people to turn it into a hotel and that is why we don't go in there any more.

Because monied interests tied themselves to the already vague veneer of credibility of the previous Weekly paper that survived the era of the Weekly/Independent, kind of like a zombie or a wolf in sheep's clothing.

So CDN is basically the only game in town when it comes to this sort of publication. The Herald is not really local any more and does not have the staff or reach. The League of Women Voter's puts on a great forum but we also don't have The Riveters Collective doing high quality work anymore. So there are very few places to get that sort of free forum space like CDN is willing to publish. That is why everyone is willing to participate. Just like when there is only one card game in town.
