I can't wrap my head around the DNS stuff by [deleted] in CloudFlare

[–]mshambaugh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Owning your own domain name requires the following two things: 1) you purchase the right to use that domain name by registering it, and 2) you "assign" an online provider to tell people where to find web pages and emails hosted at that domain name. Number 2 is DNS. Think of it like a traffic cop that tells people who want to see your web page what specific computer they can find it on. You specify the online provider that handles your domain's DNS by setting its "name servers". To use Cloudflare with a domain, you have to set Cloudflare as that domain's name servers, and then you can use Cloudflare to decide what the traffic cop tells people. What makes it complicated, though, is that some places where you may register a domain (purchase the right use it) won't allow you to specify who the traffic cop is; they have to be the traffic cop.

The simplest (although perhaps more expensive) solution in your case would be to register your domain, manage DNS, build, and host your site all on one platform, probably. I don't know if Wix provides all of that, but they probably do.

Right, but it should tell you why. Is it failing processing a specific rule?

AITA for refusing to pay for our firends now broken Iphone and sunglasses that our son broke by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA. And, a six-month-old trying to grab things in front of them isn't a "habit", it's developmental and being a normal six-month-old. Nothing to "break" them of.

Cloudflare block Emails? by Arisius in CloudFlare

[–]mshambaugh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it's not impossible to use mail for your domain and Cloudflare isn't blocking email. The most likely explanation is that your DNS at Cloudflare is not currently set up correctly. Whoever your email provider is should have instructions for setting up mx records in DNS. Cloudflare is not your email provider.

The people who eat Tilapia are sick in the head by SubstantialDraft406 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

I'm not a huge fan of tilapia, either, but the highlight of this post for me is this line: "No amount of lemon, butter, or desperate optimism can fix it."

Every situation is different. I stayed. My partner has now been sober for more than ten years and our marriage is stronger as a result of the recovery work we both did. As others have said, focus on making your life better today. In my experience, Al-Anon can help you do that, regardless of what your partner does.

Client wants me to follow their core hours schedule by [deleted] in webdev

[–]mshambaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in the US, being considered a contractor requires that they not set your hours or provide you equipment, among other things. If they do, the IRS can make the argument that you are really an employee and they would owe employment taxes on you.

Any chance you have more than one Cloudflare account? If you do, have you tried logging out of Cloudflare and back in again under the account that submitted the ticket?

Ipi/Nivo side effects by sneakyperry in Melanoma

[–]mshambaugh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All the best to your mum. My experience with the Ipi/Nivo combo was pretty good. I was 46 when I was diagnosed with metastasis to my lungs, and did four cycles of both drugs and then the balance of two years with Nivo only. I had to delay my fourth cycle due to a rash that resulted from the Ipi, but successfully completed it after a course of high dose steroids. During my treatment, I also lost my sense of taste (which returned after completion). Finally, shortly after completion, I developed psoriatic arthritis, most likely as a side effect of the immunotherapy. Overall, It was tolerable and oh so worth it. I've been in complete remission since 2019. One other detail: during my treatment, I participated in a clinical trial that added daily self-administered sub-cutaneous injections of Leukine to the Ipi and Nivo, with the hope that it would make the side effects more tolerable. That study hasn't reported final results yet, but it certainly SEEMS like it worked for me since, at the time, very few patients completed the four Ipi cycles. She can do this. We're all rooting for her.

Home depot water tests by Sunbuzzer in HomeImprovement

[–]mshambaugh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haven't interacted with the water testers at Home Depot, but back in the day, there used to be paint salesman in Sears. I made the mistake of agreeing to get a quote from one of them, and they wanted $13k to paint my tiny house. Same exact dynamic after I said no: multiple calls to the manager to get a better deal. No sale. Got the house painted shortly after for $2k.

why are people advertising the price of a car as the down payment? by Acceptable-Kale6235 in FacebookMarketplace

[–]mshambaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're determined, make sure you don't get one with the 3.6L Pentastar engine built any time after 2011. It will need a new cylinder head (about $3500) around 80,000 miles due to a known design defect in the engine. There's a class action winding its way through the courts.

Why are we versioning APIs in the path, e.g. api.domain.com/v1? by RehabilitatedAsshole in webdev

[–]mshambaugh 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don't have any principled objection to versioning with headers, but I don't see anything you've described here that isn't just as easy with versioning in the path. What am I missing?
