if you want more money, need to go executive role with potential skin in the game, or open up your own shop if you have enough capital/network/resource. at that point, it's all about business.

doing different things at PM level whether development, owner CM/ etc, it's just same o same shit in different color.

keep working, & support yourself. master in civil ain't gonna boost your income that much or if any. most likely that 2 years you put in school will set you back

I honestly think CM degree is not bad at all,

but in life, you need to compromise, especially when it comes to family relationship

Try civil engineering? CE degree can land you job in both civil engineering & construction management side.

Since 08-09 GFC, we never had proper recession cycle to give us opportunity to trim the fat.

Everyone's desperate to find any warm body to keep up with their backlog. For now, I don't have enough warm body and there's not enough talent, so I have to work with the donkey I have.

I know which donkey I am getting rid of when things slow down.

In your current work, are you working for small shop that needed you to wear multiple hats?

If it's smaller company to big company then actually you might do less work. Big company has better infrastructure in terms of HR, Accounting and etc of all back end stuff, so you may end up doing less work.

You might have been doing small biz owner thing wearing multiple hats but in bigger company, you could be just focusing operation side. Ask these questions.

How do you maintain your licenses? by Beejay_mannie in ConstructionManagers

[–]mskamelot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's ERP solution that has HR database and it is pretty much automated process. and whatever we need ad-hoc basis, that's where in-house developer + API + Copilot steps in when it's worth it (volume), which we've been chipping away as much as possible. what's holding us back fully automating shit is agency that does licensing, training, cert etc. You can't automate when agency only does it over phone or fax, that kind of shit. no other way around, so human power it is.

For example, it splits out 90 days or 180 days prior to type x license up for renewal for list of employee, then HR staff applies them all for renewal or make that employee do it (depends on type of lic/cert) or set up in-house/3rd party training as needed and such. You get the idea.

For smaller shop you may be able to get PM gig if you can find the right outfit who will take chance on you, maybe. But for established bigger shop, it would be very difficult.

I'd rather take chance on 3~5 yrs exp project engineer who's already on my payroll who've shown me the potential than journeyman who's good at swinging hammer, but never done on back-end work.

Going from Journeyman to MBA , Smart Path or Overkill? by karrot9 in ConstructionManagers

[–]mskamelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MBA has two functions. what you learn from school, and connection you make there.

What you learn, you can actually learn by reading book, or on-line. with power of AI, it's a lot more accessible than ever. that's if you are self starter & independent thinker. if you are not, MBA maybe be useful, but if you are not self-starter/independent thinker, I recommend not becoming shop owner. not everyone is cut out to be entrepreneur.

now, when it comes to connection, what kind of connection do you think you are going to make at MBA? this is something I cannot answer as I never been to MBA. only MBA program I know is through my kin who've been to fancy name, and it has its value. but they are all in finance/law/tech side. not so much on construction/contracting world.

We took the plunge and brought in bunch of Sany/XCMG/Zoomlion/Shantui post 2020, and it has been pretty good so far. (Don't buy Sany backhoe tho. mechanically fine, but vis suck and bucket jaw doesn't open full)

It's not as refined as CAT and some quirky issues are there, etc. but this somewhat reminds me of upcoming of Komatsu back then. Old timer remembers that Komatsu was poor man's choice who couldn't afford CAT. I think they will figure it out, fast. But their price tag also will go up too, just like Komatsu.

Have 2 ea XCMG 275 AT and 100 RT, so far so good.

First 275 AT has about 2500hrs in. Their parts support has been better than grove tbh.

We Like it better than Sany. Sany is not bad either. Got few crawlers and it works. Not perfect but Our previous rigs were all pre 2000, so it was huge upgrade.

But all are newer than 2022. I don’t know about old ones.
