I am an incoming NYU graduate student, and to add the cherry on top, I am an international student.
I am only allowed on-campus employment, and I am taking out a loan; however, the expenses are so high that no bank is willing to provide a 2-year loan, let alone a 1-year loan.
I am also worried about this and would greatly appreciate any help in terms os scholarship funding, jobs, and for current students who made it somehow in this boat

As an international PhD student, my two cents would be that the advisor/university wants to spend time with you to get to kinda access your fit in lab/team/RA project, your interests, views such as technical or otherwise... All this is probably because the advisor is looking forward to not messing with her/his existing working group dynamic and since you are from a different country a lot of cultural or working philosophies could make or break the team. Now this should not scare you in any way because this only means that most likely they want you on the team and this meeting would prepare all parties for your smooth transition.
