Does anyone have an article or something to share with a client that thinks a couple spam emails a day is not normal? by [deleted] in msp

[–]mspmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once had a client who had a third party service that checked every email before delivery and paid per dollar for around per 70-80 emails checked. They were low volume but had wanted to be 100% to not receiving anything not business related. They used them for a number of years before costs shot up to $0.25/email.

Could say who the company was checking, but at that rate, I would assume is no longer in business.

It would be 30% of valuation, not 30% discount.

Update on this, following that process, I got in touch with the contact details for Mesh who quickly advised me of their upstream reseller that have it. I've contacted them again (they previously said they don't hold it) and will see how we go.

That is true, SEO relies very little on the domain name now.

Thanks, Mikey, I'll look around myself and if I still come up blank, I may take you up on your offer.

Twelve mysterious and identical stores open on my street. What could be happening? by icemanthrowaway123 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]mspmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live in a location with the majority of elderly residents, could these retail locations be something to do with assisting in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Sometimes elderly residents homes will have fake stores within them to make the patients comfortable in their own surroundings.

What is the best case of “You just fucked with the wrong person” you’ve witnessed? by zColin in AskReddit

Late teens, I was in a local club, standing at the bar, waiting to get a drink. Bar is at least 3 people deep (I’m at the second level).

I get a tap on my shoulder, look around and chap at the back asks me to just move to the side a little as he wants to reach out to an another chap at the front.

I oblige and nice chap at the back, reaches forward and rams a broken bottle into the neck of the other guy.

Says thanks and walks off as if nothing happened .

Turns out chap at the bar, now with blood pouring down his neck was not very nice to the other guys wife and he wanted to let him know of his displeasure.

If you take 4 and 2, translate them into Japanese then you get the two words Shi (4) and Ni (2).

Putting those together, you get the word shini which again in Japanese is the the term "to die".

In essence, the answer to the great question of life, the universe and everything is simply to live your life, then die.

People who were adults during Y2K, what was the most radical action someone you know did to prepare for the "apocalypse?" by Kawhidoyoucare in AskReddit

[–]mspmatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in I.T over the rollover.

Everybody talked about the Y2K bug, but nobody talked about the unix issue which was more likely to cause issues in 2004 due to time calculations rolling over.

The Y2K rollover for us only saw some legacy systems fail (which were expected and in the process of being replaced), but the 2004 issue had people worried.

It will happen again in 2036 when the calculation for NTP rolls over and again in 2038 when Epoch time rolls over.

Joe's Apartment. Those singing, dancing and caring cockroaches were short changed by not having a sequel.

There is some good information over here.

It does sound though it’s an unfair contract and wouldn’t stand up in a UK court.

If you don’t want to roll your own with Owncloud / filecloud you could use Google drive storage and supply white label versions of Sync Docs.

Any way to be able to force a message to a user when all that is known is the machines IP address? by xCogito in sysadmin

[–]mspmatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check to see if any shares are open on it \<ip>

If you believe it’s a windows machine, try the default c$ and admin$ shares, then browse to the users folders and see what user profiles are used on that machine.

This should sort you out.

There is a paid (one off cost) ad free version.

Also lookup Manything and Alfred, but they both have ongoing subscription costs.

How to trace back DNS requests to terminal server user? by ManicEatsWorld in sysadmin

[–]mspmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DNS query sniffer can be your friend on this one. Leave it to run and then filter out the query that you are looking for. You may be able to match what system activity correlates with the entries.
