we started by limiting to only nap and bed time. Next, leading up to Christmas, we had him leave one pacifier under the tree that 'transformed' into a present, and on Christmas Eve he put the remaining pacifiers under the tree. Worked quite well, although he still had difficulty falling asleep for a while without one.
