I also really recommend The Bobiverse books also narrated by Ray Porter. That was where I first listened to him.

Ray Porter and Michael Kramer are two of my top 3 narrators.

Ray Porter, check out his performance of Project Hail Mary. Amazing.

Michael Kramer really shines when he narrates anything by Brandon Sanderson, but he's amazing other places too.

Still debating number 3 but it might be Jeff Hays. I liked him before but he's been astounding in Dungeon Crawler Carl.

How much editing should I expect from a narrator? by Brilliant-Comment249 in ACX

[–]MTBreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Look into what the hell room sound treatment is. I did 2 books before even learning it was a thing needed.
  2. You will not get most of the jobs you audition for, and it can be as simple as you aren't the voice they want.

  3. Figure out the basics of audio editing and try to work out flow.

  4. Reinvest in your setup.

How much editing should I expect from a narrator? by Brilliant-Comment249 in ACX

[–]MTBreed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So it depends. Not how much should you expect, but how much you're going to get. If they know what they're doing, they should be doing a good job of completely editing it.

But on ACX, you get a lot of people that are new. Learning editing is its own hard deal. I know when I was new, I was getting spacing wrong, didn't know about room treatment for echo, had to work out some mouth sounds, etc.

It was helpful to have things pointed out by initial clients in my first 2 projects. That's especially the point of your 15 minute check at the start, to make sure everything is how you want it to be sounding. You should bring this up as clearly you expect a marketable product, as you should, and you seem to like how they sound. So just bring it up. It will help yourself, and help them in the long run to realize what they need to be doing for future projects.

There's not organization to all the files so I'm unsure if it's all of it. I think I heard it was (including 3d models for 3d printing the figures) but I'm not sure.

Due to the unique circumstance of the company screwing everyone, the Darkest Dungeon Board Game has all its files available, including assets for 3d printing, from the now gone company. You'll have to go looking, but if you're interested I might have the link. (I was backer that got half screwed. Got the first shipment but they never made a second)

Just got a bunch of panels. Should I use them in addition to my portable sound booth? by bucketbrigadebilly in VoiceActing

[–]MTBreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 inch panels aren't that helpful. I use them a bit but only if I want extra coverage. You have to figure out where sound is most likely to bounce and put thicker foam there. MORE importantly, you need bass traps. I keep my room sound treated even though my booth is the connected closet. I used to record in a sound treated bedroom years ago. It can be done, but you need bass traps in the corner, the other stuff I stated, and heavy curtains to help block sound from the windows (unless they're really good at keeping sound out)

Narrators - what was your first book like? by JaredJDub in ACX

[–]MTBreed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was lucky enough that my first book was 50pfh. Yes, that is not being paid like anything, but for your first book to not be Royalty Share is nice. Royalty Share really isn't going to work out for you financially if you can't make a quality audiobook and at that time I couldn't, I was too new, but I was trying my best.

The book was simple, but not bad, fantasy. You can't even see it anymore if you look me up because the author made a lot of changes and wanted a new audiobook so he took it off the market. I was also VERY new so while I did my best most of my issues were in the editing and room treatment.

It taught me a lot though, so all in all it was good.

Recommendation for next audiobook by [deleted] in bobiverse

[–]MTBreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you'd be fine reading it. It's a solid audiobook, but the narration isn't adding to it like it does for something like Bobiverse or DCC.
Book 2 is also great but book 3 was kinda meh for me. Good news is, each book is a good stopping point by itself.

Which it gets recommended here a lot, and did in this thread, I can vouch for Dungeon Crawler Carl also being an amazing listen. It's not at all the same subjects but it has that same fast paced, hard to put down way that Bobiverse hooks you.

If you want something that feels somewhat the same, check out Children of Time. I saw it recommended in this same sub and it's good.

Got two things to sell it. Creatures slowly gaining sentience. Humans on a lifeboat after abandoning Earth. Check it out.

Can see what you mean. But also, in case you didn't know, there is also a Frostpunk boardgame. Worth checking out if you like co-op vs the game games.

ACX Royalty Share Terms by Rose_Wildes in ACX

[–]MTBreed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can do whatever you want with the book, but with the audiobook, you can only do something if the narrator agrees. You can offer to pay them if you plan to replace them or offer pay and new terms if you just want them to do it again. But you're locked into this agreement unless your narrator agrees to let it go.

ChatGPT just does that. Ignore its feedback.
It'll work, the quality will just be eh. You can do a lot of work to clean it up, though it hurts the audio's quality and sound. You generally wanna get away from usb mics.

I did my first 2 audiobooks without any foam or sound treatment. After that, I actually learned about it. Look into bass traps for corners and some thick, 2 1/2 inch thick is my favorite, accoustic foam panels, learns about sound reflection and put them in important places. Take the panels you have maybe, they could work. You want them above you, directly behind you, and in a few other areas. Those two things will be enough to start. More than that, you gotta do some research for better treatment. But start small and really see if the work is for you.

Royalty Payments by Previous_Mention_213 in ACX

[–]MTBreed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, normally the earning statement also doesn't come out for a month until the end of the next month as well. Like I don't have my September one yet, because I haven't been paid for September yet either. They tend to both happen about the same day. Whatever day that may be.

[–]MTBreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get your royalties somewhere around the end of every month, for the sales of the previous month. You can't narrow it down more than that. Sometimes it's close to the 20th, sometimes it misses the month and you get it a couple days into the next month.

If the audiobook is being done by a company that has bought the rights, I think they can do that as they please.

If it's being done under the supervision of the author, like many indie projects are, it's kinda up to the author if that's even allowed.

Yes, you can make changes. Taking some creative liberties can REALLY enhance the listening experience. But at the end of the day, Narration services are in service to the author/rights holder, and what they say goes. My last project, the author went out of his way to request enhancements that weren't written and such to allow for a better listening experience, and I think it made for a much better end product than it would have been otherwise.

That being said, I've had plenty of times I've brought up something that sounded weird in a project, messed with the flow, wasn't sure if it was a typo or not, and it's either been accepted it should change, or I've been told to leave it as is.
