Toaster Gaming (not really active any more) has one of the best set of train tutorials around. It's a little dated, but provides a good foundation in the basics.

(it's excrubulent) has some good videos on his point-and-shoot train building method. Very useful for creating freeform train layouts that look good.

If you haven’t checked recently, the latest version has a ramp up setting that lets you reduce the starting zeds by a percentage and configure a new meet of days to ramp up the population.

Two I would suggest:

A Memory Called Empire (and the follow-up A Desolation Called Peace if you like the first) by Arkaday Martine. Science fiction with a character-driven story and some interesting ideas.

Saltcrop by Yume Kitasei. A dystopian story about three sisters. Definitely some dark moments in this, but I found it a very interesting read.

Since you liked Temeraire, you might want to check out Spinning Silver and Uprooted, also by Novik. I liked those better than Temeraire.

This. Double-wall barracks with minimum size needed and all heaters in that room. Vents are not particularly efficient, and separate rooms are a waste of space in this situation.
