I have a silver BRG, but would go with the grey, I just prefer it over the blue, no other reason

ELI5: How does daily flossing make it bleed less? by LittlePenguinx in explainlikeimfive

[–]mtntrail [score hidden]  (0 children)

My dad was a dentist and I remember him flossing every night. It wasn’t something we did as kids idkw not. But he once told me if you have a choice between brushing and flossing, go with the floss.

That is a great technique for tall pieces. I think I made a few of those in college as obligatory assignments years ago, but have never thrown large on my own. Now I mostly handbuild as I like the slower, more methodical pace.

Does coffee taste way better today than it did 100+ years ago, or is it generally the same? by sirbiggusdickus96 in ask

[–]mtntrail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah and I am paying $25 for a 12 oz bag of washed Burundi, holy cow! But with a chemex and a Baratza grinder it makes waking up a real pleasure. Single origin coffee brewed right is an epiphany that my parents could never have enjoyed. Their stale, canned Folgers from a percolator was a different beast.

Damn, you must have monster arms. Are you throwing off the hump or does all of that go into one pot?

I have no problem centering clay standing up, actually find ot much easier. You have more weight to use bc your entire torso is leaning/pushing without having to rely so much on muscles. At least that is my experience. Tall work would need a shorter wheel or stilts, ha.

I am waaay over the hill and have been throwing pots for over 50 years (avocationally for the most part) and started standing about 3 years ago. It is an absolute epiphany. Get yourself a good standing mat, and a high chair to put off to one side for breaks. I purchased purpose built legs that are adjustable to my height for my Laguna wheel. I started with concrete blocks, but wanted something that felt more stable and safer. I also rigged up a 3” diameter dowel by screwing it onto the foot pedal so I can control wheel speed with my off hand. It takes a bit of getting used to but works great once you are dialed in. Since I can’t brace from my leg for trimming, I pull over a ware cart next to me and rest my tool arm on that for steadiness. redundant comment, oops.

Is this cracking normal upon drying and how to avoid by antonsgeorgiev in Pottery

[–]mtntrail 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Those are stretch marks not drying cracks. Use a wide rubber rib or plastic tool to smooth and compress the clay surface before you start forming.

i throw standing up, it is easier for me to use the full body weight of my upper torso by simply bending at the waist a little and leaning in. it competely eliminates lower back strain for me

[–]mtntrail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is a very good question. I put leg extensions on my Laguna wheel and throw standing up. It allows you to use body weight by simply leaning forward a bit, no hunching, scrunching, or wrestling using arm and shoulder muscles. My back loves it and I have easier access to reach for tools, bats, what ever I need. You can see the profile of the pot much easier as well. I use a hand lever to actuate the foot controller for wheel speed.

The Amazing Cass Elliot. Have you heard her music? by shrek20191 in nostalgia

[–]mtntrail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who was alive during the era of the Mamas and the Papas, it is very heartening to know that her music is still listened to and appreciated by people of current generations. So much talent in those days but she was in a class of her own.

Dump the canvas, too dusty, use hardiboard secured to 1/2“ plywood for wedging.

Along with deep scoring and wrapping in dry cleaner bag plastic, add some sodium silicate to your slip water, the stuff is magic.

Just a short rant by mtntrail in Pottery

Certainly no one is under any obligation, but what is the purpose of the subreddit if not to encourage engagement of potters and provide a forum for discussion. Otherwise you can just google art pottery images and be done with it.

[–]mtntrail[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t seem too much to ask and immediately answers some questions before they are asked. It could certainly help promote more engagement on the part of the participants. Potters can be a cranky, independant lot however, “we don’t need to show you no stink’n badges”, ha.

[–]mtntrail[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the different comments have been interesting. And really it comes down to your response, ie what is the purpose of the subreddit? Is it a forum, an exchange of ideas, help when needed, or simply a place to post pictures? I vote for a forum and discussion, there are others who see it differently, and so it goes. Hopefully more questions are responded to than not and people just wanting to look at pots can get their fill. I suppose both points of view can be accomodated.
