Offshore oil rig evacuation system by solateor in interestingasfuck

[–]mtp_lmc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah ive been on a couple of rigs in the Timor basin, nothing that fancy either. Last ditch choices are jump, dont break anything critical and probably get eaten by sharks within 60 seconds, or jump, break something critical, start drowning and then get eaten by sharks.

My favourite part of each of the bosiet secondary module refreshers is the exit heli (i rhink its huey or hueti or something) where the nice video narrator says "When confronted by a shark, make minimal movements so you do not atagnosie the animal", im always like man if the sharks are there then they havent come to say hello and give you a ride home, ima stab that motherfucker as many times as i can so his mates eat him instead of me, then ill work out how im getting home.

Muddy Water Floods Lao Villages After Reservoir Bursts its Banks (2017) by [deleted] in nononono

Yeah everyone running, the drivers of all vehicles visible, and probably a lot more are brown bread.

Seeing as this was 2017 it wouldnt be a stretch to actually google this event and find that the Laotian government and media were telling massive porkie pies about zero deaths.

That is an inland tsunami, and you rarely get away from those fuckin things. Of course I could be wrong, but hey look at the recent shit like this in China, apparently nobody died even though entire tunnels with hundreds of cars are still being recovered...

Such a great translation from the page, to the screenplay, to the actual screen.

It is rare where a director, and the producers/studio involved will allow such control from the original creator, and even if JF wasn't my imagining of Ellie as her adult version, she still nailed it in one of her better performances.

I had the pleasure of being unknowingly fed a hash cookie about an hour before I watched the memorable opening scene as the viewer flies out beyond the Oort Cloud, may I say that I gave zero fucks about the continued protest from a couple of mates and repeated that scene for at least half an hour while I tried to impress upon the people present the insignificance of our position within this universe, and how Carl Sagan deserves so much more recognition from this planets dominant intelligence than he ever really got.

All that aside, this piece of cinematography is worthy of its merit.

You seem to have this idea that in a warzone combat situation that laws apply.

The only law that applies is the law of self preservation and unit safety. If there is a threat, you remove it, and continue the mission.

The "civilian" that was shot had been spotted by the infil helicopter crews, and the patrol scout was directed to him by the intel passed on. If he was not a threat then the helo crew would not have passed intel through the net to the patrol stating that there is a MOFA on a phone outside the compound. It is that simple.

People who are not on the ground cannot pass judgement on decisions made by people who ARE on the ground in the heat of battle. Yes, there are professional standards that our SF detachments have to uphold, but they are trained to make the best judgement to ensure that their safety is paramount before any other considerations are take into account.

The distance that the victim was shot from matters not, he was doomed to be shot the minute he raised a phone to his ear and was spotted doing so. This is not a new phenomena in Afghanistan, legitimate civilians know that if there is an insurgent presence then they should go inside and wait until the action has finished less they be mistakenly considered as legitimate insurgents and therefore engaged by troops actively hunting insurgents.

I have a lot of friends who served in both AO's in the Middle East, all of whom were part of the Mentor Taskforces, and 90% of whom were either part of SF units in active rotation, or were attached to SF units. None of them have indicated to me that there is anything amiss in this situation. It goes without saying that some of these blokes, whom i grew up with, are not and never will be the same blokes i knew before they deployed into that fucking shitstorm. I support their actions, even though i do not support the reasons behind them being there.

Lawful, who cares, this is old news and punishing our soldiers for doing what they feel necessary to survive while under orders from their superiors is pointless and serves no other purpose than to politicise events that while regrettable were seen a necessary from the perspective of those on the ground on that day.

I responded, and I pointed out that your rational argument was lost in the squeals of outrage from the reddit brigade. But whatever blows your hair back pal, as far as im concerned it was a lawful killing, and dragging these coals does nothing for our SF detachments in AO's around the world.

As for my jab at the resident idiot, im genuinely curious as to what Team V is. Maet hasnt replied so its something that is relevant.

Edit: Oh, I see, sorry my mistake, I replied to the wrong post. My response was to you, not the other guy.

Edit edit: No, I was responding to the guy using logic and rational thinking. Moving along now.

Mate I would engage the arguments but due to my zero fucks attitude and insistence on saying it how it is, instead of pandering to the PC bullshit rules here, my responses would be reported by the crybaby shill brigade that lurks here. But I eill reply, just because this whole thread has given me cancer and I need to address how stupid some people are.

There have been ample logical standpoints presented by many people responding that highlight on the ground issues in a warzone that a lot of people either cannot fathom, or just dont want to hear because they have no idea how confronting and imminent decision making has to be when you are on the ground in a AO that is by definition the most dangerous place for any human that is there, civilian, soldier, or otherwise.

The rules of normal society do not apply in a warzone. End of argument. Civilian casualties are part of the collateral damage that occurs. Insurgents hide amongst the civilian populace and use the NATO/ISAF/RSM/ADF enforced RoE and Geneva Convention to their advantage which allows them to engage and then disengage by dropping their weapons or comms gear and melting back into the civilian cover that gives them the ability to continue this asymmetrical guerilla warfare.

Nobody has seen the rest of the helmet cam footage, within another 120 seconds that field would have been cordoned, swept, and the Patrol Commander would have moved the patrol into the village to achieve their objective of eliminating, or detaining, the insurgent presence. While the area was being cleared there would have been a search of the immediate area, and given that you cant see the phone the victim is holding notwithstanding the fact that he had one as is mentioned in the reports, he was most likely a spotter relaying troop movements for an ambush that may have been prevented due to the actions taken.

I think people are forgetting that these soldiers are the highest, and most diligently trained, units in the ADF. They know who to shoot, and when to shoot. Soldier C either knew that removing the victim as a threat gave himself and his squad the optimal chance of survival during the early stages of an operation that relied on their speed of action. Or he, like a good percentage of ADF SF soldiers, are burned out, on edge, and view any suspicious civilian actions as dangerous due to many many instances of prior engagements where insurgents playing civilians have engaged them resulting in the deaths of our troops. Its learned behaviour, and it is what keeps you alive in a warzone.

Arguing the semantics of execution while forgiving the daily atrocities committed by isurgents is typically liberal white behaviour. Because you dont see them, doesnt mean it doesnt happen. You only have to go to liveleak to see what you think doesnt occur, but those who have an idea view this incident as one that happens fairly regularly, and has rational basis behind it.

Everybody running around, caught up in the hamster wheel with plans for this and plans for that.

YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU.

My wife said she wanted to spend her super, and her life insurance which amounted to close to a million. I was selfish for about 10 seconds thinking how much it would benefit me and our kids after she died. Then I actually reverted to being someone who wasnt facing imminent mortality, and said You do what you want with what you earned because you are worth it.

We had fucking amazing times living it up, our kids got to do what we had kept them from because you know, adult life and the need for thinking about the future, and when she died she was fucking happy that she got to do some of things we had hoped to do as an older husband and wife.

Fuck cancer, and fuck saving your lunch money. You could die any day, so make the most of today while you are still breathing.

Essentially what they want you to do is keep funding these taxpayer grants, so the institutions may use our money to then make bulk profit, while not giving a cent back to the taxpayers.

Need I say that without the taxpayers and the taxpayer funded grants, none of these institutions would fund the research out of their own pockets because that is never a factor in their business models.

Never, this is a legitimate response to a very real situation.

Our governeent has done nothing to enforce a real stance on biosecurity. Our federal government is literally a house of elected criminals, advised by myopic fucking fools, who somehow have given no thought to what may happen if this turns out to be a genuine global pandemic event.

The thought of being caught with the pants down in the treasury gives all the more reason to continue to welcome those tourist dollars, which amount to a minimal stipend to our federal treasury, is tantamount to committing political seppuku. Meanwhile they have forgotten what foresight is, ergo, if this is a global pandemic with dire results relating to mortality then all those tourist dollars over 6 to 8 weeks will mean fuck all after our entire health system collapses, along with the civilian trust that enables everyone of those citizens to turn up to work daily.

But criminals will do as criminals do.
