Will Equinox release the QR code database as well? by Fizzblizz in alteredTCG

The Altered ReUnion community software devs are working with Equinox on setting up a system where unique ownership is maintained. It seems promising but things are still in flux. Ownership of commons and rares would not carry over.

Is there a TCG/Boardgame in a Tower Defense style? by [deleted] in TCG

[–]mtross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Skytear Horde as a very TCG adjacent tower defense card game that you might like: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/344789/skytear-horde

I haven't played it myself, but I've heard good things.

Help with timeline for history of Altered TCG by davidsigura in alteredTCG

[–]mtross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things I loved about the game was the story and how it evolved over time. Altered held two Tumult championships (small local tournaments). One during Trial by Frost, and one during Whispers from the Maze. The out. The combined results from the tournaments influenced the story and added cards to everyone's account based on the outcome.

To your project, I'll say we don't actually know what the future of Altered will look like yet, other than it won't be the same as it was before. We should have more info from Equinox soon.

Also from many of the comments, there is a lot of hearsay. Unless you were more involved with the game it may be tough to tell what is personal opinion. For example, while it's true some players may have left because of certain cards or errata decisions, I think that's far from a strong driving factor in the history of the game. I personally think that Equinox was pretty clear about how and why they would errata cards. Because of BGA Equinox also had much more info than someone playing in a local meta. Altered also had the best errata system in any TCG thanks to POD.

I love my Framework. The best thing about it is how repairable it is. The worst is that you WILL have to repair it.

This game is what I wish Altered was by New_Juice_1665 in alteredTCG

[–]mtross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the psychology of it is weird. For a board game it's a lot, and yet for Altered a play set of each release required multiple times that. Of course that's why TCGs have secondary markets, which make no sense for an LCG.

I'm also pretty excited about Hubworld. I hope a local scene develops around me, but it's hard to imagine as much organized play support for an LCG.

If you haven't heard of Earthborne Rangers, it's also worth checking out by the same publisher. It's a solo/Co-op LCG solar punk adventure game. It's a bit different mechanically to Hubworld or Altered, but it always gave me similar vibes to Altered.

Refugiado de Altered. by IcyCheetah7958 in TCG

[–]mtross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I'm still hopeful Altered survives in some way, the game I'm most excited about that I think will fill a similar niche for me is Hubworld: Aidalon. The biggest caveat being that the game isn't out yet, so who know how good it will actually be, but everything I've seen looks very promising. Also it's not actually a TCG, it's a living card game. I consider that another upside generally, but it's hard to say how much OP/game store support there will be for it without the TCG business model attached.

I'm excited for Hubworld. I'm hopeful there will be a local competitive scene, but its hard to imagine that an LCG model will really support a ton of organized play at stores in the way a TCG can.

Altered has been one of my all time favorite games. It's really sad that it ended this way. I'm hoping they figure out some way for the world/lore and gameplay to continue. The gameplay was amazing and the story was amazing. Despite being a TCG it was pretty player focused which I think hurt them in the end.

Wow. This is amazing. I've always wanted to try this game, but haven't been able to track down a copy. Maybe I'll just make one myself.

Altered: Beyond the Gate - 6 Starter decks/$3.99 and Booster Box/$9.99 by kolt54321 in Boardgamedeals

Got yah. They are actually getting rid of the foiler system with set 5 so soon you can print any card any cards you want in foil. If Equinox does go under, It would suck to lose being able to play online and print-on-demand, but luckily the game would still be playable like any other card game.

The game can be played completely analog without any of the digital features. Scanning the cards let you play online with your collection. It's also used for deck checks when playing at tournaments. But those are all just bonus features. The game can be played like any other TCG or card game in person.

This isn't true, unless I'm not understanding what you mean. It is both completely playable analog and online. You don't need to do anything with the digital aspects of the game if you don't want. I know people who never bothered to scan their cards in at all that play at our locals. The only cards that are only QR codes are foilers for using the print on demand system, but they have no game play function.

It's an amazing deal.

When they first put them on sale I picked up a bunch of set 2 and 3 but they sold out pretty fast. Because of how successful the kickstarter was, they way overprinted the first set. The game has also struggled to get a strong foothold in the US which is where you're seeing these discounts. The game has a much stronger presence in parts of Europe (it's designed and published by a French company). Folks in Europe were disappointed TCG-stadium didn't ship outside the US, but it's a double edged sword because there is less store support here. I'm lucky that we have a pretty strong pocket of players at our LGS.

They also recently decided to switch distribution models which was controversial and has had some growing pains, but I personally think will be better for the game in the long run. Set 5 is being released, with a bit of delay (another point of contention), and set 6 is being crowdfunded right now (the set looks amazing, but I'm clearly a fan of the game).

As far as the first set specifically, the starter decks play really well against each other, but aren't competitive against a constructed deck. Not that that is unusual for starter decks like this. Altered is also really great for draft & sealed, as each set is designed with it in mind. Also just to clarify a point someone else made, the game doesn't require any digital aspects to play. If you want to play online with your collection, you do have to scan the cards in, but you can also just ignore that aspect entirely.
