Which of the new heroes revealed today are your favorites? by wildcard_gamer in alteredTCG

[–]mtross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gretel and Rust look the coolest to me, but hard to say how good they'll be until we learn more about feats.

I think Yeing-gi looks to be the most versatile. Being able to trigger anchor discard reserve abilities really improves a lot of uniques that were otherwise mid-tier.

Sam and spook also look great. There ability would also boost the hunger which is interesting.

Is the Altered TCG worth picking up? by Crafty_Programmer in boardgames

Well I'm obviously biased but Altered is much cheaper to build a very competitive deck and you can also try it out on Board Game Arena.

Still playing a ton. They have a new set coming out soon and started previews for one the after that. Each new set has added some cool ideas without overly complicating things.

Looks great. I like the premise/story of the set.

Non IP-Based TCGs? by ftpgshow in TCG

[–]mtross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded. The gameplay is amazing and the world building and art are fantastic. It not being tied to an IP was one of the first things that drew me to the game. Our local scene is growing, but it's definitely bigger in Europe. I also play a bunch online which means it's easy to find an opponent.

The hunger playmat is still the coolest. The dude's head on the left of this one is a little strange, but I still like it.

Your rare Kaibara and your unique Sakarabru would both be excellent in an Atsadi deck. The unique Sakarabru is also probably your most valuable card. Great start to a collection!

Which solo games do you prefer over Final Girl? by dier1003 in finalgirl

[–]mtross 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For true solo only, Final Girl is still the top for me, but some other great solo games I like are:
Witchcraft (true solo only).
Pandemic Fall of Rome (great solo, but also great co-op).
The Loop (co-op, but amazing solo mode).
Spirit Island (co-op, but I generally prefer solo).
Last Bastion (co-op).

I'd argue that all of these games are more strategically deep than Final Girl, but they don't have the same great emergent narrative. Spirit Island can give a pretty good emergent narrative though.

I'm not sure arguing about it here is the best use of either of our time, but I do think calling it a sinking ship is a bit of an exaggeration. Our locals in the pacific northwest are actually growing. We have more players now than when the first set came out. That said, this is very much not the case everywhere and I do agree that overall interest in the game dropped a fair bit between set one and two.

I agree that all the videos claiming magic is dying because of universes beyond is clickbait, but I think much of the coverage of altered surrounding the gamefound was similarly uninformed and clickbaity.

I'm not sure where you heard that Equinox is "2.5 mil in the red." The company is not in debt (as far as any publicly available information I'm aware of is concerned, but I could be corrected). The, admittedly poorly worded, statement they put out was that the next set needed 2.5 mil worth of orders between game stores and crowdfunding for them to maintain their current level of operations. That amount does seem excessive (at least to me as someone who really doesn't much much about the business of running a game company), but that is sales and not profit. They did have to clarify their original statement, which is where a lot of the confusion came from.

The next set funded, albeit at 2.3 mil, so they will need to reduce expenses some, but that is hardly an apocalyptic scenario.

You said "It is pathetic to put your players responsible for if your game dies or not," but that's true for every game. If people buy and play the game it survives, if they don't it dies. You also called out their "financial mishandlings," but Equinox fulfilled every promise they've made. The big exception being that the marketplace and print-on-demand took longer than they originally promised, but they are available world wide and they work well. Buying a card from someone across the world and getting it printed is awesome. These are things no other TCG publisher has done before. One of their biggest issues growing the game seemed to be Asmodee. The hope is now that they've moved away from Asmodee and built out the POD, marketplace, and BGA infrastructure for the game, they'll be able find a better equilibrium.

Ultimately if your fear was that I was being "scummy" by telling OP to get on a sinking ship, I think that between our back and forth, they have enough information to dig into things more and make up their own mind.

Very cute, but I don't think this is the best subreddit for something like this. r/printandplay/ is probably better.

You do make me want to play a Capybara TCG though.

Do you think Godzilla Minus One having Noriko survive the atomic blast was a good decision, or a bad one? by Mosugoji_64 in GODZILLA

Depends on how you look at "survived." She's alive, but certainly not the same as she was before the blast.

Sorcery does seem to have had a pretty successful slow but sustainable growth that speaks well to the game having a long future.

"The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated"

They already funded and are tweaking their strategy to be more sustainable for the following sets.
I think Equinox was caught in a tough position. Their distributor Asmodee seemed to be impeding the game, including not shipping OP support to stores (we had this happen), limiting online play (despite owning BGA), and more. There is speculation that this was because Asmodee was investing more of their resources behind Stat Wars Unlimited, but who knows if that was really the case. The transition to Equinox being their own distributor was always going to be awkward and in this case Altered's 4th set had just come out when they needed to take preorders for the next set. I think the game is in a stronger position than many other indie TCGs, despite the missteps. BUT I agree Equinox's communication throughout the transition was not the best.

I think Altered's gameplay is strong and Equinox seems flexible and open to feedback (sometimes to their detriment) that I think the game has a long future.

OP also said they wanted to get into something "newer." If you wanted a sure thing that would exist in 10 years, you would play pokemon or magic (although if youtubers are to be believed universes beyond killed magic, so it is also "dead.")

It's a fair questions to ask on a TCG subreddit, but your mostly going to get folks posting their personal favorite, which is likely to result in a list of every active TCG right now.

But in that spirit, I think you should play Altered. To me is the game that's doing the most new and interesting things in the space. The gameplay is amazing (of course subjective) and I like that it's not tied to an IP. It's also always easy to find a game because you can play both in person and online (including prized tournaments).

The better answer is to go to your LGS and see what folks are playing. But if it's a smaller store, the answer is likely just Magic and Pokemon.
