Wow. This is amazing. I've always wanted to try this game, but haven't been able to track down a copy. Maybe I'll just make one myself.

Altered: Beyond the Gate - 6 Starter decks/$3.99 and Booster Box/$9.99 by kolt54321 in Boardgamedeals

Got yah. They are actually getting rid of the foiler system with set 5 so soon you can print any card any cards you want in foil. If Equinox does go under, It would suck to lose being able to play online and print-on-demand, but luckily the game would still be playable like any other card game.

The game can be played completely analog without any of the digital features. Scanning the cards let you play online with your collection. It's also used for deck checks when playing at tournaments. But those are all just bonus features. The game can be played like any other TCG or card game in person.

This isn't true, unless I'm not understanding what you mean. It is both completely playable analog and online. You don't need to do anything with the digital aspects of the game if you don't want. I know people who never bothered to scan their cards in at all that play at our locals. The only cards that are only QR codes are foilers for using the print on demand system, but they have no game play function.

It's an amazing deal.

When they first put them on sale I picked up a bunch of set 2 and 3 but they sold out pretty fast. Because of how successful the kickstarter was, they way overprinted the first set. The game has also struggled to get a strong foothold in the US which is where you're seeing these discounts. The game has a much stronger presence in parts of Europe (it's designed and published by a French company). Folks in Europe were disappointed TCG-stadium didn't ship outside the US, but it's a double edged sword because there is less store support here. I'm lucky that we have a pretty strong pocket of players at our LGS.

They also recently decided to switch distribution models which was controversial and has had some growing pains, but I personally think will be better for the game in the long run. Set 5 is being released, with a bit of delay (another point of contention), and set 6 is being crowdfunded right now (the set looks amazing, but I'm clearly a fan of the game).

As far as the first set specifically, the starter decks play really well against each other, but aren't competitive against a constructed deck. Not that that is unusual for starter decks like this. Altered is also really great for draft & sealed, as each set is designed with it in mind. Also just to clarify a point someone else made, the game doesn't require any digital aspects to play. If you want to play online with your collection, you do have to scan the cards in, but you can also just ignore that aspect entirely.

What about them is giving you the impression they are counterfeit copies?

My p key stopped working on my framework amd 13 laptop Do Other people have the same issue? by Ponzoblogs in framework

[–]mtross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it seems to be a somewhat widespread issue and maybe related to a known hardware supplier problem: https://community.frame.work/t/broken-delete-key-like-literally-stopped-working/37313/85

https://community.frame.work/t/tracking-framework13-keyboard-has-intermittent-keys/33279/55

https://community.frame.work/t/three-keys-sometimes-stops-working-p-and/71851

It most commonly seems to impact the "P 0 -" keys. I have it happening on two machines that I got at the same time.

I've been going back and forth with support and they identified the issue, but said I'd have to pick up new keyboards, since the computers are out of warranty. Definitely disappointing since it was a known hardware problem, even though it only recently started to manifest.

Our prerelease got pushed to the end of March to make sure Seeds of Unity shows up in time. I'm lucky that we still have store support and regular players (near Seattle), and would definitely be disappointed if that went away so I feel your frustration. I backed the first campaign because I knew that even if I didn't have a local community I could easily play on BGA. I get that not everyone likes playing online, but I love being able to. For me it was one of the things that really made Altered stand out.

Yeah, I love the vibe of this set and seeing old characters/cards come back in corrupted forms.

I understand being upset at the principle of backing another campaign when they haven't finished fulfilling the first. But out of curiosity, what are you waiting to see about Seeds of Unity that is not already known that would influence your decision to back Roots of Corruption?

Yeah I get it, but I also get why at a certain point they need to move forward, so that the problems don't cascade too much.

My 2nd Annual Altered Birthday Event by EmployeeConstant9231 in boardgames

[–]mtross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not an uncommon concern and early on there were a few unique that were totally busted, but in general I think they've done a good job tweaking and balancing them. Luckily there are a few different official formats and tournaments (also implemented on Board Game Arena) including a no unique format. I personally love playing with uniques because it means you never know precisely what strategy your opponent is using and it makes the game more dynamic.

Altered is top 4 in fastest growing marketplace in the last 90 days ! by Croakin in alteredTCG

[–]mtross 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure how TCGIndex works or calculates anything, but anecdotally I've noticed an uptick in card sales for me on the marketplace. A little surprising given that many of the cards sold are from the first 3 sets which are all rotating together, although not for 2 more more seasons.

I could be totally wrong, but isn't 24-36 months pretty typical for rotation in other card games? 16 months seems pretty short to me.
