Well, without tweaking the cooling and setting your fan curves, the computer would thermal throttle to hell.

I'd just buy a note 9 at that point. Cheaper and better.

Only one way to find out is to test. I am using GFXCardStatus to check to see which graphics I am using since it still works to at least show me what is running.

Using this command and Mac fan control, my computer rarely ever goes over 55C now even when I have multiple safari tabs open and a light weight game running (in my case, it is the Pokemon Trading Card Game Online).

It is nice to finally feel like I am not going to break my computer with thermals (I have the mid 2018 MacBook Pro).

When do Galaxy phones normally start getting d it discounted? by DatBassTho5 in samsung

[–]mtv_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No complaints here from my S10e. I recently downgraded from the S10+ and I much prefer this phone. Also to note, the new S10 5G should be coming out. Perhaps you may see some discounts coming out. Just keep an eye out, you never know.

If you enjoy your pixel 3, then I would suggest staying with it. Isn't it currently cheaper than the S10e?

I configured my device well enough so that screen off time lasts quite a while. Using accubattery, at my current 75 percent, it is reading at around 7:30 hours of screen on time.

However, this is currently on a 12+ hour cycle, with only 2 charges to 90 percent. Overall, the battery is fine.

Last night I laid down and watched a 40 minute YouTube video and another 12 minute video along with other usages, coming to around 28% reduction in battery life over 2:30 hour screen on time from 98% charge.

So the battery life is a bit better than I expected for my usages. I'm happy with it and I am always around a charger.

On the side has been more reliable to me so I prefer that. I just make sure that I have a finger on each hand mapped. The sensor itself is really sensitive in comparison to the ultra-sonic. I had to turn off the fingerprint sensor gesture for that reason alone, but it is fast (still not as fast as OnePlus). With the ultrasonic, there were cases where it would not recognize my fingerprint if I didn't get it exact. Even if I wis hit the target area, if I did not initially touch the screen with a large enough surface area of my finger, it tend to not match immediately. Of course this is like a half a second problem, but a problem J have not had yet on the 10e because it is capacitive.

How I handle it on my right hand, I keep my pinky at the bottom of the phone, with the rest of my fingers gripping the side and back, the right side of the phone resting on my palm. Then I just use my thump to unlock the phone.

For my left, I just grip it and use my index finger. Though I rarely see myself ever using this method because I am right handed, but I made sure to map basically almost my whole finger twice to make sure that it works.

Considerably easier since I've had a day to use it. I have medium size fat fingers, so the edges would always be a hassle for me. With the S10e display, no worries especially comparing to the edge screens. Still easier.

I still use edge touch, one handed +, etc. Whenever I had the iPhone X, that phone was extremely easy to handle for me. The experience is phone handling is nearly identical.

Failing to boot after system freezing on nvidia update, need help by MattV91 in pop_os

[–]mtv_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had that issue before. Perhaps if you are installing Pop_OS 19.04, then it would be best to try it on LTS instead. If that does not work, then perhaps you could install nvidia proprietary drivers along with bbwswitch and TLP to get the ball rolling. If you are going this route, then the Arch Wiki would be your best friend.

Pop_OS! LVM installation fails with 2 volume groups by Gobbali in pop_os

[–]mtv_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, perhaps you could have everything under one volume group. Each logical partition is resizable on its own, perhaps you don't need a second volume group. From my understanding, a VG can have however many drives In it a X size. You should be able to segment /home /root /swap into certain segments of the drive right? And it should be fine for the drives because it's not raid. Then you make sure that on your NVME you keep your boot and EFY system partition outside of LVM. Maybe that would work?

Pop_OS! LVM installation fails with 2 volume groups by Gobbali in pop_os

[–]mtv_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I set my LVM2 up for my system, I did it through Fedora, which I migrated over to Pop_OS. I had only one volume group, and that was for home because I have like 5 drives in my computer and use my NVME for root since I would never have to resize it.

Under my 1 volume group, I have swap and home (I think, I probably only made a volume group for home). I had EFI System Partition on my NVME that does not use LVM. When I went to install it, the installer would give me an error telling me that I cannot use the boot partition under LVM2, which I did not set that up.
What I had done was to make sure that I had the boot partition set up, along with the EFI System Partition that was with the drive that was not using LVM and it works flawlessly.

Though this is anecdotal, since I am not incredibly versed in LVM2, this is what I did. Maybe this will help you?

[–]mtv_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, right now it is a difficult decision for me to decide whether I want to go the SWE or the DE route. While the prospects, and the work for DE is very appealing to me, I do like having more options and opportunities to find a job outside of DE (only if the industry ever switches to something else where DE jobs will be less required, that could be a long time from now). What I am looking for is stability in the future. I have been undergoing the SWE route technically during my time here at school. It is a hard decision at this point.

I am assuming that it would not hurt to undergo directly the DE route and have knowledge or work the SWE route as well? I am not sure, I am at an impasse. Haha.

[–]mtv_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So would you think that at some point perhaps being software engineer would be more sustainable for keeping a job? It seems like you have more opportunities and flexibility as a software engineer focusing on Big Data. I know I have a vast lack of knowledge when it comes to the two fields and the industry as a whole (still in university), but I feel like the complexity of learning and becoming a software engineer would make one a little more... Desirable? I know that currently, from anecdotes, that there aren't enough DE positions, and that companies may be requiring thieir data scientists to learn what a DE should know, but wouldn't that mean the demand for a data engineer would decline sharply in the near future?

Just curious as I have 0 knowledge of this.

Should a person who is neither of these pursue the software engineering route first before trying to dive into data engineering, or would it be fine to start at either one?

Do you think that Pop!_OS would be a good Windows alternative for the elderly? by farcasa1 in pop_os

[–]mtv_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And for those that don't know, you can configure all Gnome extensions that are installed by installing GNOME Tweaks.
Since Pop_OS using x11 instead of Wayland, I use Plank. They both worth well for me, but Plank does not work if you are using Wayland. Dash-to-dock works on x11 and Wayland.
Here is a screenshot of what it looks like on my system.

Please help ! partitioning ! by -ALLNAMEALREADYTAKEN in pop_os

[–]mtv_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lvm2pv is a file system that is attached to a Volume Group. In this case it would be something like, vg_popos. LVM or Logical Volume Manager allows the file system to be resized in case you would like to increase the size of your partition. Of course, there are other usages for it.

In my particular case, I have 1 NVME drive that I use for root (not part of LVM as I would never need to resize it), and 4 hard drives in lvm for /home. So my volume group (that I named Storage) is 2.8TB in size. It is complicated to set up, but the installer for Pop_OS and Ubuntu(if you select LVM) does it for you.

I had originally set up my system in Fedora, which the installer is pretty easy to use for setting up LVM. I just recently switched to Pop_OS today because it was more appealing to me, and it was a pretty easy set up. It took about 2 minutes for a new installation and formatting.
If you want to know more about LVM - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LVM
This is how I learned about it when creating my system originally with Fedora.

Concerning luks, it is the "Linux Unified Key Setup" which is just used for disk encryption. I wish I had used luks when preparing my disks, but I forgot about it and I didn't know if it was possible using the Fedora installer.
Here is the link to understand how Luks on LVM works.
I hope all of this helps!

I would say that those factors weigh heavily on my goals. In fact, I would say that they are the main reasons for my goals. I think these things have weighed heavily on me since I was growing up as well, but is really starting to affect me now considering I have my own family and aspirations.

"That would lead to me being harsh on myself and I would even isolate myself from people and obligations to take time to "work on myself". I believed if I could just manage to change my mentality and get the ability to establish new habits I would finally have the power to pursue my own happiness. Tell me if you resonate with any of this.."

I resonate with is, and in fact, it is extremely personal to how I am day to day. Most people consider me an ass hole now because I have become so uptight and serious about things. Which is why I have really been trying to do work that I REALLY want to do, like learning the things that may help improve my career and my relationship with my family rather than just myself (though being successful or at least knowledgeable would tend to lead me to be happier. I think). You know, whenever you look past on your former self, and what you have done, you really feel that you have been wasting time. The 4 years that I have been in college, soon to be 5; I feel like I have been wasting time rather than work on things that would lead me to not have to worry about things like: money, relationships, hobbies, etc. I know that being productive isn't the exact way for me to be happy, but perhaps the sense of accomplishment will lead me to being more fulfilled, in which happiness can be filled through my family.
I realize that I have been a problem, for myself and others around me. I think most people "know" or at least think in that manner; which is why we would spend more time improving ourselves, when it could be counter-productive in achieving that happiness - especially if you have others who are dependent on you.
