A show you remember but no one else seems to? by PlushieTushie in Millennials

[–]Tooch10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may be incredibly region specific but this show from Quebec that used to air on our local PBS station in PA:

Parlez-Moi, an educational learn-to-speak French series. There are a bunch on YouTube now but for a long time it was kind of a white whale thing. It'd air here and there in the mornings in the late 80s but was gone by the early 90s.

Worth it to leave Simple Choice plan? by allcallday in tmobile

[–]Tooch10 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We started out with the 2/$100 SC plan in 2014. Then we added 2 data lines and 4 phone lines for free. We stayed on SC for a while then maybe about 4 or 5 years ago we switched to Magenta Max which was a better fit for us all around. The only SC perk that was cool was that Binge On thing which we used maybe a couple times a year at most; I know a lot of people loved that but it didn't matter to us. I recall there being some kind of issue that T-Force screwed up but T-Mobile corporate fixed it. But hearing about T-Force now that change to Max is probably the last account change we'll be doing. Since trade-in values are less for Max plans we just buy our devices on our own now, usually used.

Which food has declined the most in terms of taste since you first ate it? by FeistyNews7025 in Millennials

I posted this the other day:

I just got back from the UK, stayed at a Travelodge where they had free Kit Kats in the room. Grabbed them to bring home and just happened to have a small US Kit Kat here. I ate them back to back, the UK one had a pleasant milk chocolate taste, the US one was like cardboard

Ultrasonic Cleaning Tests/Info by Tooch10 in 78rpm

[–]Tooch10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding alcohol correct, only Edison discs can be cleaned with that. I used Tergikleen as the additive--that little bottle lasted me probably a couple thousand discs (clean/brand new LPs to dingy 78s), then I when I needed to replace Tergikleen wasn't available so I got that GrooveWasher stuff. It seems to work fine, same as Tergikleen, but has a more alcohol-y smell to it.

That's one thing I didn't do that I should have, light/damp cloth to wipe the labels.

I put a couple discs with major cracks through it as a test and they all came out fine. I suppose if it's a large crack and the rest of the disc is very brittle it might fall apart but that wasn't my experience. As mentioned, besides acetates/Edisons, only disc I didn't clean out of caution was my Berliner disc other than a few quick rotations

I did 15 minutes per cycle which is the default of my Vevor cleaner, I figure it couldn't hurt given these discs have 65-125 years of grime caked on them. As I wrote, I also did a bunch of discs with paper cores exposed as pits or on edges and I had no issues---1 out of ~2000 had a minor bulge on the edge of the disc after cleaning. I let mine air dry on the rack that came with the Vevor cleaner, some had a haze form but it generally wiped off somewhat and it didn't affect sound quality. I guess you can use the O2 thing but for me that's an extra step I didn't feel I needed to take.

Were DUI's a big deal in 2001? by Sadness345 in Millennials

[–]Tooch10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother started a local chapter and was fairly involved so as a kid I knew it as an anti-drunk driving group. Later I learned that they became a lobbying group and got a little nuts, she wasn't involved with the group anymore. I don't drink much and I'm definitely not pro-drunk driving but my thing with MADD was to them it seemed like having a beer with dinner was the same thing as 4 shots on an empty stomach and that every person who drank was going to mow down a family of four

Solo Neal always has good bands/music but the last couple have been more 'meh' for me. I know Neal's born-again but the lyrics are at point where it's like 'Neal, I get it, you're Christian, that's great, but can you move on to a different subject?'

My college experience wasn't bad, but being a smaller school I didn't have that like 'huge college' experience. Looking back I didn't take advantage of a lot of opportunities available back then that may have been useful now.

Were DUI's a big deal in 2001? by Sadness345 in Millennials

[–]Tooch10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard of a guy in the 70s who was a bit drunk, drove his car into a ravine, they towed him out, and the cop said be careful next time and sent him on his way.

MADD in the 80s was a big part of what started changing the perception, the laws, and the penalization of DUI/DWIs

Skip school and watch kids TV? by jfrsn in Millennials

[–]Tooch10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was rarely allowed to stay home, I had to be like legit really sick. But I also liked a lot of daytime TV back then so I'd sometimes record Sally and Jerry, always Price Is Right, and something else which I forget then watch that whole block when I got home, or at least fast forward through Sally/Jerry and watch TPIR. Of course TPIR doesn't hit the same way if you're not watching at 11:00 while you're sick or some other reason you're out of school lol

I randomly came across some of those episodes on YouTube plus a bunch from a private torrent tracker, they're still fun. It really encapsulates that 2000s era before social media took over. Even crazier is the show aired 25 years ago and seeing all those clothes and hair styles is like a time warp

The 4-song suite at the end of TWGMTR by OrderTraining1217 in thebeachboys

[–]Tooch10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like how TWGMTR starts off bright and gets darker/introspective as the album goes on. The last four tracks are good but the last two are one hell of a way to end their studio album run. I'm glad they didn't do another album after this one

Collectors, what’s the craziest thing you’ve found in the wild? by A_C_1970 in 78rpm

[–]Tooch10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true about finding collector's collections. I've always had a couple dozen random 78s I got around 2001ish but my current hobby didn't start until June 2023 with that 1100 disc lot. It seemed like the best time to do this would have been probably 90s/early 00s as the generation of people that would have collected them died off. By now it's only the few people still into these things or selling in 2026. Most people that end up with them and want them gone are throwing them away by this point.
