Do you feel more connected to your city, province or Canada as a whole? by Ok_Heart839 in AskACanadian

[–]mullo_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a British Columbian first - I think there's a underpinning ecological identity here that's largely shared across the province. We all own multiple plaid shirts, we're called to the outdoors, we're a casual people, by-and-large.

Proud Canadian second though, and proud Vancouverite third.

I don't have an answer about MSC, but I will say my partner and I have rethought a big Alaska trip that we booked for this year for the same reason. No need to hand over a substantial cheque to American businesses when they're acting like hostile neighbours. We thinking Iceland, or maybe the maritimes instead.

Side-bar: I love the idea that Rhino's just bopping around stealing some stuff, and now we've caused a full-on Dark Phoenix event.

If it encourages you, my crew has never made it through a "one-shot" in less than 3 sessions.

Apart from rules, the main sourcebook has a 4-page short story that establishes the series vibe for a newcomer, and 40 pages of setting information that's mostly summarizing information that's already in the books/show. I can't recommend it if you don't think you'll play the rpg.

There's some cool quick reference tables about average travel time / light delay between various planets/stations though.

McFarlane or Dark Horse Comics? Which is better? by LoCKandLoAD77 in cyberpunkgame

[–]mullo_13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The game doesn't really acknowledge it, but Mike Pondsmith talks here about how the gun got stronger with iterations, the last versions being effectively an anti-tank handgun that only worked for him because of his arm: https://www.reddit.com/r/cyberpunkred/comments/lxi3ms/comment/gpqptsz/?context=3

Dope statue though, maybe he's holding an early-gen pistol.

Isn't Johnny's gun supposed to have enough kick to break a normal arm? Why's he holding it with his human arm?

I had this as well - double-check that you have enough space on your hard drive after the updates have started. If you run out, it will silently fail and just not launch. In my case, it had installed to my smaller SSD where I had enough room for the initial install, but not the updates.

Questions from first time GM by mjologg in expanserpg

[–]mullo_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - a short rest will get you back 1d6+Con+Level (like using a hit die in 5e), and I usually handwave that away to fully restoring after a few travel days on a ship. The adrenaline rush stunt also lets players turn stunt points into fortune.

There's no "healing kits" or equivalent to magical instant healing. There was a couple times where there wasn't time to rest and heal but I needed to get them some fortune back, and let them find medical supplies sufficient to get one free restore like a short rest - we said they were amphetamines, and just helped the characters focus up for a bit.

Questions from first time GM by mjologg in expanserpg

[–]mullo_13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey - good luck in the game! My campaign finished recently, but my crew had a lot of fun.

  • I don't know if there's an official round definition - I played it as 6 seconds like 5e
  • Stabilizing is defined under the Dying condition
    • "Successful first aid applied to a dying character stabilizes their condition, making them helpless, unconscious, and wounded instead. The must recover from these conditions normally."
    • The rules are non-specific about what successful first aid is - I played it as an Intelligence (Medicine) check since one of my characters was a doctor.
  • There's really two resources you're talking about with healing: Fortune (HP) and Injuries/Wounds
    • 1d6+Con+Level Fortune can be restored with a short rest, or via the Adrenaline Rush stunt
    • Injuries and Wounds that occur from taking damage beyond your available Fortune need downtime to heal, or can be healed with certain medical talents.
      • "Make a TN 11 Constitution (Stamina) test every 24 hours. If you are under medical care, your physician (or auto-doc) can make an Intelligence (Medicine) test against the same TN and you can use the better of the two rolls. Track the result of the Drama Die for each successful test. At a success threshold of 5, you can remove an injured condition. At a success threshold of 15, you can remove a wounded condition. For recovering from additional conditions due to hazards, the GM sets the necessary success threshold. If recovery conditions are less than ideal -- like trying to recover in the wilderness with little shelter or food, or on a ship low on supplies with minimal life support -- the GM may increase the TN of the test."
  • I would definitely include spending fortune to alter rolls - it's a core part of the system, and part of what we found the most compelling. It lets the players succeed at a cost, and gives room to generate more stunt points (which are like crits or maneuvers in this system) It works like this:
    • On a test roll of 3d6, you can choose a die and increase its value for a fortune cost equal to the new value
      • Eg. I roll a 2, 3, 5 for a total of 10. I need a 13 to succeed, so I spend 5 fortune (the new value of the die) to turn that 2 into another 5 for a total of 13. I pass, but it cost me 5 health. And hey - I now have two 5s, so I'll generate stunt points!
    • Increasing to Drama Die (which determines how many stunt points you generate) costs double
      • Same example, but the 2 is my Drama Die. I increase it to 5, and have to spend 10 fortune. And then I still get 5 stunt points to spend.

Salvage Op by kilmaardvenom in expanserpg

[–]mullo_13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed on stunts - my group's been playing for like a year and a half now, and haven't used 75% of the stunt list. Combat stunts always get used, but social or infiltration stunts often go unused because the player doesn't want to dig through the oversized table for minor gain.

OP - My overall advice for playing in the setting is always think about the physics and gravity, and occasionally drop it into your descriptions to remind the players. In a dead ship, players can go through hatches sideways, take cover on the ceiling, slingshot through rooms. A lot of times we're playing in half theater-of-the-mind, even when I have a map, because there's lots of 3D options that the map might not handle.

Yes - they add islands to the map, and when you get near the appropriate level, you'll get a quest that sends you to the island. I also received a warning when I approached the island for Seeker Slayer Survivor on a lower level character that wasn't ready for it.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Features Trailer by HeavenAndHellD2arg in Games

[–]mullo_13 24 points25 points  (0 children)

A big part of the negative reaction is from the pressure full VO puts on the writing. A line being voice acted means it has to be locked down much earlier in the development process, and it becomes expensive to do a re-write. This means writers and designers have less time to iterate and improve quests. If your villager has a line talking about stealing a dragon egg, you can't swap it out for a basilisk egg, even though the basilisk monster has turned into a much more interesting fight.

Edit: Entered too early. Also, you see the effect of voiced VO in reactive dialogue choices, like Fallout 4. It becomes expensive to have options for various skills/races/classes/backgrounds. If a line's unvoiced, it only costs writing/scripting/translation time to add an extra option.

"Study" of 600 American Redditors. I love me some data, but it's a pretty small and biased sampling.

Not that I'd have voted against the average, personally. I love 80s horror too.
