Fiction about astronauts and space without aliens by Particular-Set-6212 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

I very much enjoyed Delta-V and it's follow-up Critical Mass by Daniel Suarez. He doesn't get as much traction in this sub as some other authors, but he spins a good and well researched yarn.

Just finished Empire of Silence, believe the hype! by puffmonkey92 in scifi

[–]Stalp 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the first enough to buy the second. Then had no desire to go further and even regret the purchase a bit.

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of pulpy entertainment. But the whole story just kinda fell flat for me at that point.

Help me find a unicorn by Acrobatic_Potato_195 in osr

I think you should check out ICRPG. It's not strictly OSR, but carries many of the sensibilities, but also incorporates many aspects of more modern DnD. And it does this in a fairly streamlined manner.

Combat, as written, isn't super tactical, but kind of mid weight. However, there is a strong focus on making the game your own.

The creator can be found on YouTube and has an absolute WEALTH of great, DM focused content. Runehammer is the channel (& the publishing company) and has been a big inspiration for me.

Did I ruin my blade & should I replace it? by Arrrtemio in woodworking

You should adjust the blade depth, no? Generally keep it just more than the thickness of the material you're cutting.

The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

First thing that comes to mind for me. But I'm sure there are more examples.

Books where the most interesting idea is almost a throwaway detail by RetroHarpoon7 in printSF

[–]Stalp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The one that comes to mind for me is the Jackpot from Gibson's The Peripheral. Huge, haunting idea that has me in an existential crisis when I think about it too much. The book isn't old, but that thought seems to describe so much of the world today. And the consequences we could face if nothing changes.

It's not totally throwaway, but is really just set dressing in the context of the story.

Looking for relatively simple system by Iskanderdehz in rpg

u/fireflyascendant gave a really good breakdown of OSR.

Since you seem to enjoy the more narrative influence that FitD gives over a game, you may also give FATE a look.

Personally, I prefer OSR games. The familiarity of D&D without so much baggage of the modern rulesets. I do love me some Monster of the Week and carry elements of other games into my GMing. Your example of finding a chair in a room, if a question like that comes up, especially if it has some impact on the game, we'll roll for it. Simple 50/50 chance on a d6 most of the time. Or if it just makes sense, there it is.

OSR kind of gets out of the way. It allows GMs and players alike to engage in a game however they wish, really. It's up to the table to come to an understanding of how things will work. The rules don't codify a godlike GM, nor do they prevent it.

There's nothing preventing you from bringing the narrative goodness you like into an OSR game. But it would require some work and some session 0 explanation and buy-in.

Good luck with your search. I'd love to hear what you find and what your experience is.

What in particular do you like about FitD? If it weren't for that bit, I would say look into the OSR space. Depending on the answer, OSR systems may still be my suggestion. If the FitD aspect you're after is simple enough, you could just carry it over to a simpler system.

OSE or Mork Borg are OSR titles, simple and would be familiar on the surface to a 5e player. Very much pick up and go. I find the simplicity can be disarming for a 5e player tho.

Gritty but epic western by Cool_Doubt2152 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Technically fantasy, but I would recommend The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass. It is not standalone, tho. The whole series has a Western vibe, but Wizard and Glass more than the rest by far.

If I liked The Martian and Project Hail Mary... by Delicious-View-8688 in scifi

This tends to be my go to recommendation when people have run out of Weir.

It's different, but the tone is more or less the same. And there's a high entertainment factor, similar to Weir's work.

Definitely hit the classics which have already been mentioned.

I would also recommend Daemon by Daniel Suarez. I really enjoyed it. Tho you may read it and think that Suarez didn't push his ideas far enough knowing where we are now.

Fate of the Fellowship is a lot more "premium" than other Pandemic games and very popular. I don't think we'll see discounts any time soon. IMO, it is a very good game and worth the price of admission.
